The W2k upgrade wants a qualified boot drive before it will load. So get the W98 working first, and W2k will go anywhere you put it. You may find a way to trick the drive letters between C and D, but that should not be a big deal in getting where you want to get. Just accept the dual boot cfg that it offers.

After you finish playing around, you will surely settle on XP, so I recommend XPP. This is a real OS! And the security offered by NTFS makes this a proper choice.

With two drives you have a lot of flexibility. But if you want the dual-boot manager offered by W2k, you may want to keep W98 on C:drive, and W2k on D:drive. My preference would be to unplug the W2k drive, and get the W98 drive booting the the way I want it, then install the second drive and start the W2k install.

I also prefer to start the W2k install by making a copy of the 4 setup floppy disks from the ‘makeboot’ folder on the W2k CD, then start the install from floppy 1. After floppy 4 is loaded, you will be given the choice of formatting one or both HDs, the type of format, and which to load W2k on. Having both HDs in FAT 32 is fine. You of course want to avoid over-writing the W98 drive at this point.

Is the W2k CD a full version, or upgrade version? If it is an upgrade, then you will want to follow the above procedure.

Are you able to get into power-on setup?

W2k and XP should load in extended partitions. So – three primary and two extended partitions – might work.
Does your boot mgr allow 5 different active partitions?

I’ll try again. She is using Wordpad (yes?). She is not using Works (not even clipart). She will be using a gif folder with images.

      Then, create a template:
      1. Open a wordpad blank page, do letterhead if desired
      2. Set the cursor on the page to the top-left corner where the gif will sit
      3. ‘Insert’ an ‘object’ (browse up the gif, then insert )
      4. Save-as ‘filename.rtf’. This becomes the template.

To print , open filename.rtf, and print. Out comes the blank sheet(s) of paper with gif on it.

Lonnie, the Works package (except 2001) includes a fairly decent word processor which produces *.wps documents. Just locate cursor on page, and insert ( clipart etc).

Or is the problem “convert” gif to bmp or jpg or whatever?

You may have to copy the images to a folder that Works can find.

Then “save-as filename, template”, and she is in business.

I do not understand the difficulty. My 2000 address book asks that new entries be made in the form of ‘first’ and ‘last’ names.

Then, open the address book, click on View, and the Sort-by function gives options.

Best check with the program’s web site. They may have downloads for XP, or advice for you. In many cases you need to upgrade, for a fee. Example Norton AV 2002.

Did you follow the specific Norton fixpotok tool for ME? Email worms/removers mess with the address book, and I have found residual damage causing open to hang.

Check for a corrupt odbc.ini in the windows folder. If everything is clean of the virus, uninstall/reinstall Outlook.

      You can hack the registry.
      Run regedt32. Pull up
HKCurrent User>Control Panel>Keyboard>Initial Keyboard Indicators, and change ‘0’ tp ‘2’.
      Next, pull up
      HKUsers>Default>Control Panel>Keyboard>Initial Keyboard Indicators, change ‘0’ to ‘2’.
Exit registry, make certain NumLock is ON, then reboot. It should come up ON.
The ‘2’ above remembers the NumLock state at shutdown.

      Can you check for virus?

I have not been able to find a quick reference like you are seeking. There are a couple of O’Reilly books I have found helpful. “Windows 2000 Pro – The Missing Manual” and “Windows 2000 Commands – Pocket Reference”.

If you want quick answers, give Leif a jingle. He is our lounge librarian, and all-around HERO!

Are you setting up server or workgroup?
If workgroup, users will have to learn a new level of details about user name and password administration, and shared folder access using permissions. Also recommend each W2k box have at least one extra user with administrator privileges and a password kept safeguarded.

    • in reply to: Network Browsing & ‘Computer Description’ #545443

To connect to the W2k box, you need your administrator name and password setup in the W2k user authorization, then you must be logged on with same name/pw. Then manually map to the ‘W2k’ C$, you cannot browse it up.
