Found the following at the HP5100C site:

Follow the instruction listed below to install your HP Scanjet product using the software drivers that came with the Windows XP operating system.

      Shut the computer system off.
Connect the scanner to the computer using the USB interface cable (for the 4100C series) or the parallel cable (for the 5100C series).
Plug the power cable into the scanner and connect to an electrical outlet.
      Start the computer system.
After Windows XP has finished loading, push the green scan button on the front panel of the scanner. A New Hardware Found icon will appear in the lower right corner of the computer screen.
Please wait while the software necessary to run the scanner is loaded. This process may take a few minutes.

Site specifically says XP has drivers built-in!

My XPP has detected everything, so far, hung on USB ports. Includes printers, scanner (Epson 1200) , and digital camera card readers! Give it a try.

What port is the scanner on? LPT1, shared with the printer?

I have that scanner attached to LPT1 on a W2k machine, with downloaded HP software specific for W2k, and the system does not detect the presence of the scanner on boot-up. BUT the scanner works! … provided the scanner power is on at boot-up.

Just pop a pix in and ‘scan’ from the image management software.

In my opinion HP has been derelict in posting drivers for Windows OS releases.

Or delete the icon from the startup group.

Are you saying that you open a blank page in Word, and cannot change the font, right there in broad daylight.

If you can change the font in a word doc, you can setup a blank page to your liking, then ‘save as’ a template, then swap names until you get it in the proper directory as normal.dot.

To install programs, you need administrator privileges. Are you the administrator on this pc?

      Thanks. That’s good to know.

Can you share with us the user class that each user got mapped into? Go to control panel, users accounts, and see what account each is in.

Perhaps different versions of XP OEM. I am still waiting for Dell to send their XPP, which will be mailed when they test and approve XP OEM.

MerC? Gentleman, scholar, lounge guru, and sometimes phunster!

As MerC would ask ‘where are you coming from (or sometimes, where have you been)’?

Are Windows XP and 2000SBE both OEM, loaded at the factory? Or is 2000SBE a stand alone product?

Has this combination ever worked properly?

Good luck on finding the right door. Incidentally, the site contained a rather juvenile trick!

I visited your referenced site, and found access denied by ‘disable Active Script” in IE6 Security. When enabled, could proceed on to next step.

Turn on your show/hide tool to see if you have non-print characters on the second page.

Did you try File>Import on the pst that you think is your latest?
