Using File>Print, the print panel opens and should list all your active printers in the “Printer Name” options field.

Click on Start>My Computer, right click, >Properties>Computer Name> Change, and there you are.

Are you interested in sub-folder ‘invisibility’, or ‘see others’ sub-folders but deny access’? scratch

OK – So there is a distinction between making a folder$ invisible, and making it visible but denying access. We do the latter.

      Thanks Leif – compute

Leif – do the security rules governing local user access to local files depend on the PC network configuration being domain vs non-domain?

What jstevens is asking for works quite well in my W2k workgroup. We turn off the ‘allow inherited priveleges’ switches and kill the ‘everyone’ users, and give specific access to the sub-folders to the ‘loader’ and the ‘user’.

I have only worked with non-domain peer-peer. But I would guess that permissions are handled in a similar fashion. scratch

If your files are NTFS, you can hang permissions on folders, by user, with 3 privileges. Maybe files too, I’ll have to check. You talking about domain, or non-domain?

Check that protocol NetBEUI for your NIC shows in the Control Panel>Network>Configuration.

      OK MerC … Same same.

Started with dual boot W2k OEM on C:Drive and XP-RC1 on G:Drive, a separate HD, both NTFS. I killed Norton 2002 AV in msconfig, rebooted the RC1 OS, popped in the XPP Full CD, and started setup on top of RC1.

XPP Full Ver recommended ‘upgrade’ option, and I accepted. Put in 25 digit code, then it asked for internet connection to get updates. I manually started my DSL PPPoE connection, and it downloaded about 3 minutes.

The only surprise came about half-way thru, when it asked for setup CD for my HP1215 Photo Printer. After setting up printer, it asked for the XPP CD again.

After 1 hour, everything up and running with preferences maintained. I was required to enable security in the PPPoE access module for the specific users, and am on the net now.

Overall, a good trip. It never touched my C:drive where W2k is installed, and left my dual boot intact.

    • in reply to: Fat 32 vs NTFS #1789926

Yes – less crash prone and less corruptible.

On the other hand, if you are building your own box, you know about setting up boot partitions and managing very large drives over 32gB. Also if you are going to run XP Home edition, you cannot take the full advantage of NTFS security.

      Good luck.

    • in reply to: O2K SR1 (new install) won’t stay open (Office 2K) #1789909

As I recall, must keep the original Off 2k CD in the drive for sr1a to update, whether online or from the *.exe that downloads to hd.

    • in reply to: Fat 32 vs NTFS #1789893

Bill – NTFS is the secure way to go. I personally have not found a reason to stay with Fat32.

How do you plan to transfer your ‘good deal of data’? Are you on a net, or do you plan to use removable media?

I was fortunate to be on a peer-peer net with old PCs (W98,Fat32) and simply drug the data to my W2k NTFS PCs. Not a single problem. Of course the apps need to be installed from scratch on the NTFS machines/partitions. I now share NTFS data between drives/partitions with dual boot W2k and XP.

FWIW you might look in the user’s Start MenuProgramsStartup folder for the Office Shortcut Bar icon.

Thanks MerC. I’ll keep an eye on it, do not want to clobber my W2k on C:

    • in reply to: XPP Upgrade #550547

Did you just pop the Full XPP CD in, and run setup? Right on top of RC1? I have my RC1 in a separate G: drive. Can I do your trick there?
