AskWoody LoungerThis happens to me periodically. If nothing else works a reboot will fix it for me. Yes, this has been happening for a long time and through multiple versions of windows.

AskWoody LoungerThere appear to be two versions, one for the Windows Desktop and one for metro. The desktop one is version 3.8.8 and works fine for me.

AskWoody LoungerIn Windows 8.1, I have been trying to set up the Super Admin account like Fred talked about in the last newsletter. I have the new Administrator account, but I can’t figure out how to set up a new user account to give access to all my stuff. As it is now I get this weird desktop with basic icons.
I know not to run on the Super Admin only to do admin tasks. Thanks for any help. The admin account is a whole new user account, hence the default bare bones desktop. It does not have desktop access to the things in your account. An admin would access your account files and items via the file system.

AskWoody Lounger.NET frameworks are part of windows 8.x. Go to Control Panel – Programs – Turn Windows Features On and Off. Select the desired packages and click OK.

AskWoody LoungerIt is part of Windows Update, do you have that scheduled to run automatically?

AskWoody LoungerJune 3, 2014 at 5:44 am in reply to: What backup solutions are ‘non-Metro’ users of Win 8.1 using? #1455228I use file history to a local networked drive for hourly backup and Macrium Reflect Free for weekly image backups. I keep a month or so of the weekly images.

AskWoody LoungerI gave up trying to moderate WIndows updates about a year ago, I just let them install automatically. I also check periodically for additional (non-automatic) updates, those I do check over because they can include crapware like toolbars. So far I have not been bitten!

AskWoody LoungerHere is some info on troubleshooting VSS errors:
http://www.safebackup.com/faq/content/5/117/en/volume-shadow-copy-service-vss-troubleshooting.html
It seems dangerous to me to use an orphaned program for a function as important as backup, especially if it is not playing nicely with Windows. I am currently using the Windows 8.1 built in “File History” function for ongoing data file backup and “Macrium Reflect Free edition” for weekly image backups and it is working nicely.

AskWoody LoungerThis thread will help fix the issue:
I have not actually done this fix because I found “Macrium Reflect Free”, which is an excellent disk imaging program. It looks like the Microsoft imaging solution is a sickly orphan and will not be around for long.
