Tried using Irfanview to set it, still the same problem. 🙁

You could do it with a switch by vlaning the different segments, but it will get messy pretty fast and vlans can be a nightmare to troubleshoot. Like Retired said you can setup 3 IP scopes for each but since the router has connections to each, someone on one of the subnets would still be able “see” the other networks unless you put firewalls in front of each segment or have a higher end router that you could put ACLs on.

Well uninstalled LogMeIn, didn’t fix it. Fooling around I got an image to show but not in an ideal way. If I go to Web tab under Desktop Items in Customize desktop and set that to any image, I get my desktop image to show (even though it’s a different image). I then have a moveable window that shows the picture I chose under Web, which I can drag until it’s almost off the screen.

Jerry, nope, no system restore unfortunately. Had turned it off to reclaim some disk space before I got a new HD and forgot to turn it back on 🙁

      Error code 10000050, parameter1 f55bec00, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 bd67873c, parameter4 00000001.

Lmimirr.dll is the top dll listed in bluescreenview. Now that I think about it, I was connected to the machine via LogMeIn that weekend. I’ll try uninstalling that and see if it helps. Thanks for the memory prod Clint. 🙂

    • in reply to: Wireless speed half that of wired at home #1314875

Examine what else is going on in your house when you have the speed drops. Is someone using a cordless phone, a microwave, a hairdryer? One of the weirdest network issues I ever experienced was about 20ish years ago, our network was Ethernet over unshielded Coax cable. Every Thursday around 2pm the network would just crash. We were pulling our hair out until I happened to mention it to someone who worked for the Air National Guard at the airport less than a mile from our office. He said that was when they tested a certain type of either radio or radar (can’t remember) every week!

I’d agree with ruirib too, try using G. Even though it’s theoretical max is 54 gbps, that’s still almost double what your internet connection is which is the limiter.

You don’t state which version of VB you’re using, but I’ll assume a more recent one. You can do it through the File.SetAttributes method. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.io.file.setattributes(VS.71).aspx

    • in reply to: Smartphone data policy when an employee leaves #1275839

I always get around this issue by making it company policy that people cannot access company data or networks from non-company owned equipment. If they have a direct need to have 24/7 access to their email (for example) the company should own & supply the equipment to do so. They then have no grounds to complain if a remote wipe is done and the lose personal data. It’s just like telling someone “Bummer dude, you shouldn’t have been storing that important sales forecast on your desktop instead of in your redirected My Documents” when his laptop hard drive dies. 🙂

      That’s got it! Thanks all.

    • in reply to: Scheduling a Python job in Linux #1274178

Script runs from command prompt fine. I gave up for a little while and when I came back it had run at 11:02. I was trying to schedule it to run every 2 minutes, but it seems to be running at 2 minutes past the hour?

    • in reply to: Scheduling a Python job in Linux #1274036

I had pulled the script from a forum posting, and a different post in the thread mentioned something about python, so I assumed…

That being said, I still get the error, even changing the crontab entry to /bin/bash. Other posts in the thread say they’ve gotten it running, so I must be missing something.

    • in reply to: Reassigning computer names in Active Directory #1270285

What is your password policy? Computers follow the same password policy as users.

what I do is use the modify column to determine which computers haven’t been modified in the password expiration timeframe. For example, if your passwords expire after 60 days, you could look at the modified column and delete all computers that have a modified date before 1/1/2011. Adjust based on your password policy.

(to add the modified column in ADUC, click view, add/remove columns, and double-click modified.)

Great tip! Never thought of doing that before, thanks!

I’d say get a free account at http://www.logmein.com, works over SSL so you know it’d never get blocked.

    • in reply to: windows 2003 server standard edition can’t log on #1267929

Is this a Active Directory domain or just a standalone Server 2003 installation? If it’s standalone, you can use a PXE boot cd like UBCD (http://www.ubcd4win.com/) and reset the local administrator password.

If in an Active Directory environment, you can try these steps: http://www.petri.co.il/reset_domain_admin_password_in_windows_server_2003_ad.htm

    • in reply to: Beware bogus 'Security Essentials' downloads! #1257179

      Hi Fred,

With regards to changing the Drive Letters on USB disks, in my experience it’s not always a failed drive that you have to reassign a drive letter. Windows seems to get confused sometimes if you have a Network drive assigned to what it thinks “should” be the next available driver. As an example, on my work machine I’ve got:

[*]Drive A & B standard floppy assignments (even though I don’t have one)
        [*]Drive C – Hard Drive
        [*]Drive D: DVD
[*]Drive E: External 250GB USB Drive
[*]Drive F: Home Directory from my Active Directory domain login

So when I first went to plug in a Thumb Drive, it never showed up, because Windows for some reason assumed the “F” Drive should be the next available letter, but was really already in use. Once I went into Disk Management (after much thrashing around trying to figure it out!) and assigned it to G: it’s worked fine since.

      Mike

You could also use HijackThis to remove the BHO link.
