Phil, it bounces the e-mail as if the address was invalid, rather than as a reply which would show that the address was valid. I have been using it for a short time and although it adds a step or two to the mail clearing process it sure gets rid of a lot of clutter before it hits the machine.

This sounds like an open up the box situation. You will have to make the D drive the primary drive by firstly looking at the jumpers at the rear of the drive. Make sure they are set to Master. Then trace the cable from the back of the drive to the Motherboard. It will have to be positioned in IDE selector 1. You may also have to notify the CMOS that the harddisks have been changed unless they are already set to auto. Try booting up the machine and all going well it should boot to your hard disk.

To offer another slant on the situation, a little while ago I was in the online backup business. Those in the business from all around the globe swore by good external modems rather than internals. They seem – no scientific evidence that I can quote here I’m afraid – from experience to be more robust and often quicker in transmission and receipt of data packets. As Keith said the pc needs to do less work with an external, meaning that the end result is quicker transmission. My 2cents

    • in reply to: FAT32 #583796

gary, I have carried out the conversion from Fat to Fat32 a number of times without problem, so don’t envisage any. It is well worth it in terms of efficiency of use of storage space. I suggest you do all 3 drives.

D would have to be the Active Partition in order for it to boot. It shouldn’t hurt otherwise to my knowledge.

I’m not sure of a utility to solve the situation, but I recently was faced with something similar, so created an Intranet. I downloaded a free web server, in this case 602LanSuite, and set up a web site on that server. It can be accessed by all machines on my network and is easily kept up to date.

    • in reply to: serial vs ps2 mouse #581490

As Granville has mentioned you can get these at most electronic stores, but you need to be careful as some ps2 mice will not work in a serial mode. You should check before spending to find if the particular mouse wil work. If not you are better off buying a cheap serial mouse.

    • in reply to: Autotext toolbar (Word 2000) #580414

One slight variation however Andrew. I created a style based on Normal and called it Mike – for want of a better name. I applied that style and typed a sentence, then added it to autotext. When I am using Style Mike it is the only Autotext entry. However when in Normal Style the entry still appears as a separate heading – Mike – and works fine. Any font changes for that style are however lost.

So this might be a partial solution.

    • in reply to: Filename Field (Word 97) #578945

John a possibly simpler solution, are you able to map a drive directly to the current project folder??? then it would always look like x:project. The mapping could be shifted if a new folder was required????

    • in reply to: Whoops – what did I do? (IE 5.5/Win98SE) #578939

Ed what do you have in the folder c:program filesIinternet Explorer? Thats where the executable should be if installed to the default. If that particular file isn’t there what about IEsetup.exe?? Attached is an image of that folder on my 98se machine with IE6 installed.

    • in reply to: template (Windows 98SE Office 2000) #578908

I’m not sure where you might find the information apart from doing a google search, but here’s a couple of tips that might help you to do the job. Set up the document as you want it to look but without the property information – in other words put all the headings in. Where you want to place text relating to a specific property, hold down Ctrl and press F9. This puts a text field at that point. Once all of those have been done click File,Saveas, and in the dialog box in the Save as type select Document Template. Put in a name and press save. Select File,New and you should see the template. Once open press F11 to move from one text field to the next.

      Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: Internet over Lan #578904

Phil, a couple of (free) suggestions. Software 602 has a free product – up to 5 users – called LANSuite which you can use to share the connection on the pc with the 2 NICs. It also has a couple of security features although I am not sure how good they are. The other suggestion if you can lay your hands on an old 486 or early pentium is a linux based firewall, gateway, etc device. Its only a 20Mb download and you can get it from IPCop.

Either of these should do what you want.

    • in reply to: reading adaptec RW CDs elsewhere #578901

OK I guess your cdrom is not compatible. I have found on various machines that it works on some and not on others. When it works it is a great tool, but when it doesn’t its not worh a pinch of salt.

      No more brainwaves I’m afraid.

    • in reply to: reading adaptec RW CDs elsewhere #578716

Chris, one thing to try, Roxio have a prgram called UDRF Reader that will allow a number of cdrom drives to read CDRWs. It’s a tiny download and works very well on any cdrom that is Multiread compatible.

      Its worth a try.

    • in reply to: Format Painter not working (Win 98SE & Office 2k) #577640

I have to say that I’m a bit puzzled. From what you describe you are following the correct steps so it seems strange that the paint is not working. Is it just in 1 particular document? Will the painter work when copying/pasting 1 word rather than the entire para?
