I reinstalled the patches with the exception of KB3097877 and everything is back to normal on all 3 PC’s.

My Outlook 2010 is 32 bit.

      I appreciate the quick diagnosis.

Thanks for the info. I’ll wait until, say, Monday before frustrating myself :>)

In a command window enter ‘powercfg -lastwake’ and see what woke it up.

I had this problem on my wife’s computer – mouse lockups and erratic movement. This was on several different mice including Logitech. All the problens went away after I plugged the USB dongle into a 3 foot USB extension cable and placed the receiver closer to her work space.

    • in reply to: Annoying problem with new tabs #1333225

I had this exact problem a couple of years ago with the 32 bit IE. I have Windows 7 Pro x64. I started using 64 bit IE which worked fine. Some time later I had to do a fresh install of Windows 7. I then no longer had the problem. Not sure what was munged up.

    • in reply to: URL Links – 32 vs 64 Bit Internet Explorer #1333172

Thanks, Bruce. That did the trick after appending the URL after the target.

I have a Synology NAS which come with some software, including Surveillance Station which monitors the cameras in my home security system. The software runs on the NAS so my PC doesn’t need to be on. If I want to administer the cameras, there’s an applet that loads with the webpage but doesn’t work under 64 bit IE9.

    • in reply to: No uninstall? #1323093

Nope, not temp files and folders so Disk Cleanup and/or CCleaner is of no use. The majority is in “C:Users[username]AppDataLocalMicrosoftWebSetup” where there’s a number of files and subdirectories. It also creates the initial install package in “C:WindowsESD”. I deleted both folders. The installation program did not create a restore point, unfortunately. There may be other remnants.

Not the best effort by Microsoft in this instance.

I didn’t install Windows 8. I just wanted to uninstall everything the Preview setup created for installing Windows 8. One would think that Microsoft would install an entry in Programs and Features for this reason.

    • in reply to: Question about Carbonite and Windows 7 #1230553

I don’t know if this helps, but I purchased a Carbonite subscription on 6/9. About 15% was backed up through 6/12. From 6/13 until I uninstalled it on 6/20 for a refund, nothing got backed up. Customer service told me that their backup server was down. For over a week? I’ll not try it again.

    • in reply to: Folders “Access is denied” #1212797

They are legacy folders for compatibility for older programs. You have no need to access them. There are new folders, created by Windows, for current use. Just ignore them. I would have preferred if Windows 7 just hid them.

Good find and I appreciate it! I changed the file extension to WMA and all is fine.

    • in reply to: Mapped Drives Not Connecting at Startup in Win_7 #1210742

This happens to me with a NAS drive connected to my router. If I’m using a wireless connection, it doesn’t validate the user name/password and I have to do it manually. If I use my wired connection, it does. Must be a timing issue.

    • in reply to: Win7 Home Premium UPGRADE #1209599

I also wiped the drive (inadvertently) of XP when I set up a RAID array in BIOS. None of the methods referenced above worked for me. Last night, I spent about an hour on the phone with Microsoft support (mostly on hold to India). They seemed familiar with the problem. They accessed my PC remotely via IE and typed in a code in the ‘activate’ window which registered and activated Windows 7 Home.

    • in reply to: XP Upgrade Caveat #1208601

Paul Thurrott’s installation steps are a must read!

I’ll try the steps on his page. I did try to activate it after installation, but the OS informed me that the product key I entered was invalid as it was for an upgrade installation only.
