      doc…

it’s windows mail messenger…not the regular ol’ windows messenger of prior fame. That one I already disabled in the windows components function of the add/remove programs applet. I’ll try an unistall & see if I’m afforded individual programs, as joe said.

      thanks all,

      mf

UPDATE: OK…the add/remove programs applet is permitting me to uninstall the above list of programs (& leave Windows ‘Mail’).

Question: the other related components…’Sync’, ‘Upload Tool’ & ‘Sign-In Assistant’…I should keep those…as neccessary to Windows Mail???

      Thanks again…to everyone.

      OK…

Now I have Windows Live Mail; & all seems to be well (imported all components from OE; spell checking in English, et al).

But…all the other Windows Live crap came w/ the download…Family Safety, Messenger, Writer, Photo Gallery & Call. Those 5…how do I get rid of them (especially Messenger…which keeps popping up in the system tray) ???

      Thanks,

      mf

      hans & joe…

I was actually working in ‘Windows Mail’ w/ Vista. Are you saying that it will work w/ XP Pro ??? If so…I’d much rather go back (to it).

Funny thing is…(& this was going to be my next question)…when I backed up my local folders & mail messages (out of Windows Mail, in lieu of bringing them over to OE on the XP Pro system)…the messages backed up as *.eml’s inside of just folders (w/o any sort of file format, such as *dbx).

But…the hierarchy of those local folders, now in OE6…is such that…the sub-folders never close up. In other words, I can click minus signs all day long…closing up the folder tree…but the very next time I open OE…they’re all fully expanded again.

So…if Windows Mail works in XP Pro…

…& I totally close up my existing OE folder tree…

…& export same (as plain ol’ *dbx’s)…

…will everything work correctly once imported into Windows Mail ???

      Thanks much,

      mf

UPDATE: OK…I now see that I have to go w/ Windows Live Mail. is that POP3 (or web-based)?

this is silly…I’ve never, ever had this problem before. Are you guys telling me this is the norm? On my original machine, which ran XP Pro SP3 (which I just upgraded to this morning…since my OS install disc was SP2)…OE always checked my spelling in English. That machine also ran Office 2007.

Is OE upgradable (i.e., is v6 the most recent version?) Does it upgrade automatically as part of upgrading to IE7? (which I also did this morning) This cannot be…I’m sorry.

not the case, Hans…Office 2007 Language Settings are set to English (U.S.)

      goodpeople…

I’m back on line…w/ XP Pro. All programs are now installable/operable.

      Thanks for everyone’s help.

      no.

the data restoration folks told me that Vista overwrote everything I had (personal data-wise)…& that they also looked around on the drive in that machine before pronouncing my data officially gone. There was nothing under ‘all users’, ‘myusername’ or ‘default user’…everything was overwritten by the OS, in what was *commanded* to be a ‘repair’…but which Vista then decided on it’s own to perform a ‘restore’.

I still haven’t killed it though…I was hoping to be able to get all my programs to install before going that route. Microsoft ‘Streets & Trips’ will not load; & Adobe ‘Illustrator’ throws up a message that tells me that the OS cannot install two Adobe apps at the same time (???!@#$%^&*). It says to cancel installing the 2nd app & finish installing the 1st (& there is no 1st).

But the reason I was tooling w/ the idea of keeping Vista is because it came w/ NAV & the subscription service…& all costs involved…& also the pain-in-the-a_ _ associated w/ the install of a new system. I really don’t know what to do at this point, tho…to be honest…I cant use S&T or Illustrator…not sure which direction to go. This afternoon I’m going to try & update Windows Installer (as I’ve already used the Installer Clean-Up utility).

      MF

      Follow-Up: Well…scratch that…Installer is not relavent to Vista…it’s only for XP (& 2000, etc.)

      vik...

u B rite, man. 1st off, the (cheap) new box didn’t even come w/ an OEM OS disc…just the recovery partition. I’m going w/ XP Pro (which I found new, at newegg) & hope I can authorize it just w/ the product key on the box (i.e., no online crapiola in order to operate correctly).

      davea…

hey…please do not think I’m lashing out at you…would never do that…don’t get the wrong idea…I appreciate u & everyone here & all the help I’ve received over the years…dead serious about that. I’m just mad at MS…& I thought I was doing the right (& easy) thing, dedicating my ADK to audio & grabbing an off-the-shelf PC for everything else. now i got all this here mess, man.

      Thanks all,

      MF

BTW – On the not being able to add favorites thing…can that be repaired?

    • in reply to: Beware of VISTA !!! #1140306

      Dave…

Please…please do not defend Vista. You do not see an issue relative to Vista as the culprit ??? What about the fact that…out of a clear blue sky…an error message popped up telling me that a critical OS file was missing? What about the fact that…I selected ‘Repair’, but Vista chose to ‘Restore’, completely on it’s own initiative? This didn’t have anything to do w/ file transfer to the new machine…that had already occured & I was just in the process of doing PC business as usual. I already said I was an idiot for cutting & pasting (leaving myself without ample backup)…but that doesn’t excuse Vista.

Just a few minutes ago I tried to fire up Microsoft Streets & Trips (which worked fine on this Vista machine prior to the crash); & was told the registry settings were incorrect & to reinstall from the ‘original location’. I did so…but that error keeps popping up. I have no intention of now doing a complete Windows reinstall to fix everything back to the point where it used to work, especially in light of the problems Vista had in restoring rather than repairing.

Vista is a turkey; & a lot more folks than just me are saying it. If I do a reinstall…it will be w/ XP Pro & not this mess. Thanks.

      Hans…

Actually…I was following up on this white paper from MS Tech Net: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…714&sd=tech%5B/url%5D

But…I found none of the ‘Change or Remove Programs’ add-ons for Word on my office PC (XP Pro). The article lends one to believe it can be accomplished from inside of Word (unless I’m reading it incorrectly).

      Thanks,

    • Dave (& Paul & everybody, for that matter)…

The informational from AnswersThatWork did the trick…thanks much,

    • jeff…

I think so…in System Mech…ran a series of trusted publishers; sites & web content security zone settings.

There is no other location, Joe…once into ‘Admin Prop’ > ‘Select Users’ / ‘Advanced’ > ‘Find Now’…even ‘Locations’…there is only one folder listed: SAM…that’s it.
