    • SOLVED…!!!

1st…I reset my Windows Firewall to default…(have no idea why I did this, other than I suspected it was a major part of the problem & was groping for answers)

      2) when I did this…next time I fired up the PC…a message came up from Windows Firewall asking me about EPSON EVENT MANAGER…that it was attempting to connect to a PUBLIC network.

      3) rather that attempt to go about changing the network settings for this EPSON EVENT MANAGER…I simply went into msconfig & removed it from the Startup Item list

      PROBLEM GONE…now when I boot up, I have instant connectivity…to ONE network…!!!

      thanx for all the help,

      mark4man

    • ted…

perhaps I didn’t explain meself correctly…it’s ALREADY a home network…a single home network…when I’m connected. When I shut the PC down…next time it comes back on Win7 looks for a PUBLIC Network…every single time. I need to go back & change that.

      thanx,

      hello again…

was out of town for a few…sorry.

the winsock stuff didn’t work…aamof…now I have to reboot TWICE to get connectivity.

      lowracer…

the non-ideal solution is to set the network port to 100. then it works. stupid and silly how it may seem

how & where is this accomplished…???

      thanx,

      mark4man

    • in reply to: Two networks…intermittant loss of connectivity #1286579

The way you would troubleshoot it is by setting a static IP address on the PC as well as static DNS addresses from your ISP or OpenDNS. If everything works fine with static address assignment, then DHCP is indeed broken

verizon walked me thru something similar, but i’m not sure it was this test exactly. i’d like to try it…is there some sort of step-based guideline u can point me toward…??? thanx

These two commands must be run from an elevated command prompt and will require a reboot

well…that’s the thing…even the standard command prompt tell me i need to be an admin…(which i am). how on earth to one access the ‘elevated command prompt…???

      thanx,

      joe…thanx

microgroove…not sure, but thanx. verizon WAS able to ping my modem…& they were able to determine that my modem was communicating w/ the pc. when I ran the windows network diagnosis…it told me it’s DNS problem.

does that soubd related to DHCP…???

JoeP517: I don’t think it is Windows Update because there would be widespread reports if this was a Windows Update failure

well…you’re right about that…I disabled windows update & the problem continues to happen. one thing i’ve noticed is that EACH & EVERY TIME the problem occurs…TWO networks are listed at the network icon in the task area

How many network adapters are listed in Device Manger? Do you have any Yellow Error indicaters shown in device manger?

only one…a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller…w/ NO yellow exclaimation points (of course…at this moment…i’m properly connected to the internet…hence, only one network is showing at the task bar icon)

Do you have the latest driver updates for your network adapters?

going for those soon as i leave this reply

Mark, if your system uses ‘Micro Filters’ change it

      ???

I’ve seen several posts where an ISP says their hardware including the line is OK, but more testing shows that it is a line problem or a ISP supplied modem problem or an ISP network problem

well…verizon is sending a tech tomorow morning…so i’m hoping he’ll be able to check that…& other stuff like signal strength, etc.

thanx all…be back as soon as possible

      mark4man

UPDATE: Updating via device manager tells me that i have the latest driver. driver robot also tells me it’s fine. went to pc pitstop to download anyway, but am not sure if i need the 32 or 64

Mark, try clearing your router to factory specs, & re input the details re your ISP

verizon had me do that (reset)…& then they assigned a new #.

      why don’t u guys think it’s windows update…???

    • in reply to: Two networks…intermittant loss of connectivity #1285934

Hi Mark, have you tried another LAN Cable ?

      yep…same deal

Is the PC connected via ethernet or wirelessly?

      ethernet

Check for firmware updates for the router and BIOS updates for the PC

will do…but it happened again this morning (2 networks, no connectivity)…I rebooted; & was fine. THEN…as i went to shutdown…there were the doggone windows updates, ready to install.

I still think that’s weird (even tho it may not be the cause)

      thanx,

    • in reply to: Backup…How Are File Differences Determined ??? #1250177

If you are performing a combination of normal and differential backups, restoring files and folders requires that you have the last normal as well as the last differential backup.

Tim…I think actually the ‘differential’ is the backup I want,

what I want to do…to save time…is 1st perform a full, normal backup. then, perhaps weekly, perform a backup where only files that are new…or files that have changed, are backed up.

so…going back & reading your quote it seems that you are saying that the full normal backup goes into it’s own archive…& the differential backup goes into it’s own archive…& the files from the full backup that are changed are moved to the differential…??? therefore…for a succesful restore…the full archive gets restored & the most recent differential archive gets restored…???

      thanks,

      ok

didn’t have an asterisk (all sites)…had only certain sites listed.

so I went w/ all sites…& the problem banner went away…thanks very much.

BUT…as Ted so aptly points out…the banner was asking specifically about ‘Flash’…not ‘Shockwave’…& yet it is only ‘Shockwave’ that is listed in my manage add-ons list. so…I’m not sure if I’ve really solved it.

[web pages seem to look OK, tho…no blank image areas or prompt dialogs of any sort, so far…I guess I’m all squared away (?)]

      thanks again,

    • in reply to: This website wants to run the following add-on: #1226753

      A) In Tools > Manage Add-Ons…a ‘Shockwave Flash Object’ is listed…& enabled. (not sure if that’s it, tho…’cause):

      B) Actual Message reads:

This website wants to run the following add-on: ‘Adobe Flash Player’ from ‘Adobe Systems Incorporated’. If you trust the website and the add-on and want to allow it to run, click here…

      thanks,

      clint

      thanks.

I got the CPU drivers from AMD…(not chipset but cpu, in fact). now…everything is working well…save for one thing: my browser continues to get hyjacked. for example…I clicked on your anti-trojan tools link…& was REDIRECTED to monster marketplace.

so…let me refine my question…I need that to stop happening…what’s the best way to do so…???

      thanks again,

      mf

      clint…

      thanks.

what *is* the best tool for these types of things…???

I used to use ‘Norton System Works’ years ago…& that sucker wouldn’t let in anything…detected everything (trojan horses, hyjackware…you name it)

is that still a viable tool…???

      thanks again,

      mf

      oh…!!!…just saw this:

Reinstall your AMD chipset inf drivers

      from where…never got a disc w/ the compaq, I don’t believe

    • in reply to: PC WILL NOT Shut Down #1221484

      UPDATE:

[been a WEIRD ride, believe me]:

      1) Performed clean re-install of XP Pro, w/ prior drive reformatting

      2) After re-installing Paragon Drive backup…I couldn’t figure out how to bring back individual files & folders from the full backup file on external HD…so…I restored the entire drive…(even tho it meant restoring a partially corrupted OS along w/ the process). I was also worried about never being able to access my personal files/folders again; & panicked

      3) everything came back…except for my USB functionality…had no mouse/keyboard

      4) plugged mouse into PS2 port w/ adapter…now I have mouse functionality

      5) ran another full machine scan w/ AVG…& it found a trojan horse in my system32 folder…killed it

      6) Now, the PC shuts off & restarts normally (so far…so good)

      7) Deleted USB (nonfunctioning) drivers from device manager…rebooted.

      8) Now…hdwe. wizard runs & restores complete USB functionality…I now have keyboard…& acess to my external drive (better yet)

      9) performed a full backup of all important files/folders to the external HD…copy & paste style (screw that compression sh_t…& not being able to view entire backup heirarchy)

so…one would thing my troubles are over…but I have the following in device manager:

      http://www.moonjams.com/AMD.jpg

no way am I deleting drivers for the CPU…I very much want this thing to keep working (which it is now…seemingly ok…despite yellow exclamation warnings)

not sure what to do now…go to athlon & get drivers, I suppose…???

      mf

    • in reply to: PC WILL NOT Shut Down #1220914

      joe…

      1) upon booting up to come back here…chkdsk ran; & divulged the following:

      SMI12.tmp index $130 of file 72 >
      recovering lost files >
recovering orphaned file: SMIA.tmp (107037) into directory file 72

      but…same thing continued to happen.

      2) tried the auto restart uncheck thing…what I get then (at shut down) is some sort of blue screen that states that the system has been turned off (&…I’ll attempt this aagin & come back later w/ exact language)

      3) really hate chasing down driver updates…(but the aforementioned blue screen looked an awful lot like one I’ve seen before…on an old dell dimension…for a bad video driver)…so’s i spose I’m obligated…I’ll do it.

      4) also: backing up everything…right now…one never knows when she’s gonna blow.

      will report back…thanks,

      mf
