      Hi Joe
I’ve been away for Thanksgiving… It would be interesting to experiment as you suggest, but your and Doc’s earlier solutions put enough of a fix on it that I’m going to let well enough alone.
      Cheers,

      Hi Joe

W2KPro shows Start > Set Program Access and Defaults no problem, but it doesn’t show up on W2K Server, SP3 or otherwise. I ran a search in Servers’ Help, but no joy. (I know I’m not ‘sposed to be running this kind of stuff on a server anyway.. I guess it makes sense that the solution would be a little tougher.)
      Thanks,
      Mark

Many thanks, guys! That was just the ticket. Strange…I’m running W2KSP3 but that only gives Version6.4 (for which, incidentally, Options are in the View menu). I had set WinAmp for MP3’s but WMP grabbed it right back (Memo to Mrs. Gates: Doesn’t play nicely with others)
      Thanks Again.

    • in reply to: Windows Installer error on XPSP1(Win2K Server SP3) #627274

      Hi Berri,
Thanks for the note. One of the message lines indicated that the Windows Installer(?) product it found had a higher (and therefore presumably more recent version number) than that of the version it was expecting. My current guess is that this resulted from .NET framework having been previously installed on the same server. I’m going to have to wipe the server for other reasons, so probably will not be able to follow this up to much, and hope to not replicate the problem when I get to that point in the re-install!

Just a thought on hubs vs. switches – I’ve read that hubs are relatively easy for a malefactor to drop a packet sniffer on, and that switches are more difficult.

Good idea about the freeware DNS.
Here’s what Mark Minasi Emailed me today:
In actual fact, it doesn’t seem to be that big a deal. Mostly cosmetic, actually. If you want to do something about it then just restart the Netlogon service, that seems to update DNS without trouble. But really you
should have more than one DC and DNS server. I hope this helps!

I’ve Emailed him this… I love that he answers, but sometimes it takes a while. I’ll post here again when/if he responds. My network is smaller than yours by nearly an order of magnitude, and I’d hate to sacrifice another box to serving.

      Hi Dean, Thanks for responding.
I got the advice from Minasi.com newsletter #7.
I usually consider Mark Minasi on par with God when it comes to Win 2k, but this one has really got me bugged. Here’s his exact text:
      ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Running Active Directory in a Single-Server Environment Causes Deregistration Errors
Intrigued by a reader letter, I built a simple AD for testing purposes with just one server. That server acted as the sole DNS server and domain controller (as well as the sole server of any kind, file and print included) for an Active Directory-based domain. I then got a Netlogon error like this one in the Event Viewer, referring to an event ID 5775:

Deregistration of the DNS record ‘_ldap._tcp.gc._msdcs.win2ktest.com. 600 IN SRV 0 100 3268 dun.win2ktest.com.’ failed with the following error: DNS bad key.

I was surprised to find an article in Microsoft’s Knowledge Base (Q252695) that says that dynamic DNS sometimes can’t register or de-register DNS records on a system which is an AD domain controller, a global catalog server, the dynamic DNS server for that domain, and that refers to itself for name resolution (in other words, if you were to look in the “DNS server addresses” box in the Advanced TCP/IP settings for that system, you’d see that it refers to itself).

That sounds like a fairly significant problem for small offices. In fact, it kind of makes me wonder how they’re going to get Small Business Server 2000 to work in that case — if it’s anything like the current product, it might not even allow any other servers. Anyway, a word to the wise for small users of 2000 and AD is, I guess, “don’t use 2000 unless you’ve got a second server.”

Re:Saving the custom label format – Yes.

Dean, are you exporting from Excel first?

To implement Legare’s suggestion about linking, in Word
      use Tools>MailMerge>MailingLabels>ActiveWindow>GetData>
OpenDataSource(specify excel spreadsheet in file type box)>Set Up Main Document…

AFAICT, the only difference between the “Details…” and “New Label…” buttons in the resulting Label Options dialog box is that the LabelName box is blank (they both let you manipulate and save nine label parameters for the currently selected label type).

Although I’ve encountered some Avery Labels that aren’t templated in Word 2K, Avery label packages usually include instructions on how to enter the specifications in the Label Type Box.

Then again, I could try decaff..
A brief experiment showed that the file size ballooned because I had added calculated fields, and the primary reason for long saves was cuz it was over the network. Sorry about the hysterics…. dizzy

      Hi John,
I’ve noticed this behavior in Word, but not Excel from the same Office2K installation (9.0.2), using a Synaptics TouchPad on my laptop.

Mary’s post shamed me that I’m not up to speed with page controls, but there are still times outside of virtual sex when a responsive, pseudo-analog, motor-kinesthetic interface is just right. Scrolling Excel lists scanning for anomalous data is one. I really appreciate the variable speed control there, and can
