Windows XP Home & MS Office 2000 (9.0.2720)

      Hans,

I have been looking for an answer to how to change the default template in Excel for several days now & none of the methods on the Excel sites work for me. They are all similar to yours. I have tried the method you set out & that doesn’t either. Entering the path to my template file in Tools | Options | General | Alternate Startup File location: hasn’t worked.

To keep the exercise simple my Book.xlt has columns that are 20 wide rather than the default 8.43. Following your instructions I saved my Book.xlt to the folder:

      C:Documents & SettingsMalcolmApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates

I then copied Book.xlt to the folder:

      D:Microsoft OfficeOfficeXLStart

and made a copy in that folder named Sheet.xlt.

When I open Excel an 8.43 wide column worksheet is displayed. When I click Insert | Worksheet Sheet 2 is also in 8.43 columns. When I click File | New I have a choice of Workbook with 8.43 columns or Book.xlt that has columns 20 wide.

I want the sheet that has 20 wide columns to be the default. But all my efforts to do so have come to nothing!

Incidentally despite a Search of all drives & a manual inspection I have failed completely to find Excel’s own default Worksheet file. Can you tell me where I am going wrong please?

Thank you for the pointers Hans. I opened the file in Word & was able to read it. I’ll look into repairing or reinstalling Office on my son’s computer asap.

Thank you again for your further assistance.

    • The man who never made a mistake (in this case an omission) never made anything!

It is wonderful to be able to come here & get such useful & good-humoured help. Do please keep it up.

    • Your macro works fine for me. Thank you very much for your help. It is very much appreciated. The added facility of saving to a folder is a bonus that I will find very useful.

      Thanj you again.

    • Hello Hans,

Your macro, which I have pasted into module 1, works as far a picking a folder. When I press OK having selected the folder that dialogue sheet closes & nothing further seems to happen. For sure the attachments remain attached!

    • Thanks John – I do know what to do. I was doing it manually & got fed up – that’s why I looking for a macro! {8;-))

I hope those coders you have called up respond otherwise I’ll have to go back to the manual & tedious way.

      Good luck with your project.

    • Sorry – I have had second thoughts on how to express what I want to do.

In a folder (eg Sent Items) I have messages without attachments & messages with attachments. I would like to remove all attachments from any messages with an attachment in that folder.

      I hope this makes sense!

    • There’s a choice? I am quite taken aback.!

I would like to remove all attachments in all messages in a folder please.

      Sue,

You are a star! But even more so than I thought at first!!.

Entering Print from 1 to 2 results in pages 1, 2, 7 & 8 being printed. That is the solution I was seeking even though I don’t understand why I get the right result.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. {8;-))

      Andrew,

The scanning has been done elsewhere & I have no information about how it was done. However the file is in MS Word format & taking Hans point the text is “normal”. I can edit, spell check or perform any other Word function I choose to apply to the contents of the file. I would suggest that as the scanning point you raise is something I had no control over my seeking a more elegant solution to what I wish to do is still valid to apply to the file to which I have to work on.

      Hans,

I had not realised that the point you raise could be significant. There are no text boxes & the text is scanned into the file as “normal”. There are a few tables & these are also perfectly “normal”. Whoever scanned it the result is quite good. I have a copy of the original & inevitably there are errors but I dealing with these using the spell checker & by proof reading.

Thank you Hans. Successful to a point but I am up against a problem that I can’t deal with.

There are two combo boxes with drop down lists & several calendar controls all from the Control Toolbox. I cannot select the combo boxes to allow user modification & the calendar controls don’t work unlocked with the sheet protected.

This is messy – can you help me further please?

    • in reply to: Drop down lists (MS Excel 2000/SP3) #683147

Thank you for your time trouble & patience for that explanation.

When can I visit for lessons? Very soon? smile
