      Just my 2 cents worth…
I can see at least two possible negative consequences to your idea:

      1) An e-mail formatted in such a way as you describe would be much more likely to make a recipient’s Anti-Virus program scream blue murder. :o:

      2) If I received such an In-Your-Face e-mail that somehow didn’t alarm my A-V program, I could pretty much guarantee you a non-response.

A much less intrusive approach would be more likely to get you successful replies. Send the word doc as an attachment, being sure to explain what the document is and its purpose in the body of the e-mail. This would give recipients the option to A-V file scan the document before opening it and also give them the opportunity to at least consider your proposal before hitting the DELETE! button.

      Hey Y’all,

Seems there is always another threat vector!

      Read all about it here

I’m not surprised to know of the potential for infections on removable USB drives.

Many of you who have been computing since the early 80’s may remember this old joke…
Q: What’s the first thing you do with a floppy disc you receive from your dear, sweet Mother?
A: SCAN IT, of course! 😀

    • in reply to: Failed Windows Update installation: KB2971850 #1459309

      Thanks Bruce,

Try the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which mentions that specific error number: Windows Update error “0x80070002” or “0x80070003”Bruce

Tried their automatic fix button; didn’t help.
Went to the advanced options and followed the instructions to stop WU service
and delete contents of datastore and download folders and restart WU service; didn’t help.

If you can’t install the update, you would have to be extremely careful never to run a .jnt file even if disguised as something else.

In Folder Options I have unchecked “Hide extensions for known file types” so its not as likely the baddies could slip one by me.

You can run Journal as mentioned in the latest Patch Watch: (To open the app, enter “Journal” into the Start menu search box.)
      And/or find it at c:Program FilesWindows Journaljournal.exe.

Since I’ll never use it, I’d rather just uninstall Journal but can’t find it in Programs and Features or in Revo Uninstaller
and Windoze won’t let me just delete the Windows Journal folder. Any ideas there?

So, let me ask, since you have AMD HD Audio, why do think you should have Realtek too? What make and model is your computer?

      Hi rui,
It is very common for AMD FM series motherboards that have an on-board
HDMI connector to have both Realtek and AMD HD Audio.
I had one self-built desktop system with an MSI motherboard (since given to my brother)
and my current out-of-the-box Acer desktop that have both.

The Realtek is the standard audio jacks for speaker outputs, mic, and line-in.
The AMD HD Audio is usually only for the HDMI output connector.

      wolferub,
It would be more helpful if you could give us the specific HP model number.
You could also run Belarc Advisor to show what motherboard it uses.

      Cheers, Rich

I’ll give it a try and report back. :):

      *********************

It works! :D: You da man R_G. :clapping:

Installed EPM free, using Custom option and being vigilant to uncheck the sneaky li’l add-ons.

Used it on this thumb drive that my car wouldn’t recognise, which came EXFAT and wouldn’t format to FAT32 under Windoze.
      http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/detail.jsp?prodline=7&catid=91&prodgroupid=213&id=1288&type=11 64GB capacity.

Successfully formatted to FAT32 and copied about 2GB of MP3 files to it.
Now it plays from the USB music port in my car (2014 Kia Soul).

      The hamsters are happy! 😆

      ***************************

Now I just hafta copy the remaining 42GB or so of MP3 files to it. :;):

I don’t either. Oh shucks, I’m using “The Classic Shell 4.0”. Sorry!

It works equally well, whether installed on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1.
It’s just a great program and SO VERY customizable.
You can make your desktop look like whatever you want. (well, almost everything)
I couldn’t find the dancing girls.

I’ve also happily been using Classic Shell for quite some time.
Could never get the “Free Pizza” option to work either. 😆

    • in reply to: Seeking Advice on Headphones for Windows SP1 PC/Laptop #1427388

I would like to suggest using a bluetooth headset.

WIRELESS 🙂 with a built-in microphone and a rechargeable battery
and most of the ones I’ve seen will operate for at least 8 hours on a battery charge.

Most of them come with a drivers disc and a mini-transmitter/receiver that plugs into a USB port.
If your computer has built-in native bluetooth support, you probably won’t even need to use the USB transmitter/receiver.

Most of them will also work with bluetooth enabled cell phones, smart phones and ipods.

Here’s an example – on sale for $27.99 at Newegg until Wed, Dec. 11.
      http://www.neweggflash.com/Campaign/757

I have one similar (of a different brand) and it still performs well after 3 years.
Edit: Just looked again at mine… It’s an “Insignia” (which if I remember correctly, I got at Best Buy). :D:

    • Thanks Rui,
      Tried that – didn’t work.
When I re-booted, Windoze installed a standard PS2 mouse driver for it with disable grayed out.

If it annoys me too much, I’ll start a new forum thread on it.
Didn’t mean to thread-drift, just wanted to let Brooks know he wasn’t alone in being “Technical physical expertise” challenged. :;):

    • ”Physical technical expertise” is definitely lacking.Brooks

Boy, do I sympathise with that! 😆
The things that I USED to be able to do, but can’t anymore.

Neuropathy in my hands makes handling all those teeny-tiny itsy-bitsy screws nigh on impossible.

Now I just wish there was a way to PERMANENTLY disable the touch-pad on this Lappy-top.
Maybe when the warranty expires, I’ll have someone with good manual dexterity just disconnect
the little ribbon cable going to it.

Thanks Brooks for starting this thread. 😀

    • SUCCESS!!! 😀

      Purchased Macrium Reflect PRO.

Had one minor glitch… the 349MB partition was at the end of the drive after the unallocated space.
Had to use Partition Wizard to move it ahead of the unallocated space. Once all the unallocated
space was located at the end of the drive, cloning proceeded without further incidents.

Swapped the HDD with the SSD and booted normally.

WOW; this thing now runs like a scalded dog!:lol:

      Many thanks to R_G and many others who responded to BrooksNYC’s thread;
probably could have saved me some time and grief if I had read that one first.

    • Thanks R_G,

I know you can clone to a larger drive and it just leaves unallocated space on the larger drive.

This will be my first experience with a GPT formatted drive.
I made my Macrium image of the full drive with all partitions checked.
I’ll try a restore to the new SSD drive connected to USB with the dock and let ya know how it goes.

      Just curious…
Macrium shows 5 partitions but Windoze disk management only shows 4; do you have any idea what’s up with that?

      ***********************************************
      Update:

Well, my new Vantec NexStar USB3-Sata docking station is a D.O.A. A wasted pre-black Friday deal from Newegg.
The power light comes on but the laptop refuses to recognise the SSD (Intel 530 series, 240GB) plugged into it.

Dug out my trusty old CMS products USB2 external 2.5″ case and installed the SSD into it and BINGO – the lappy sees it.

Macrium would not clone or image restore to it, reported insufficient space in both scenarios.
So I used Partition Wizard to shrink the C: partition down to 210GB –
the other partitions are 400MB, 260MB, 128MB and 349MB, with 487.5GB unallocated space.

Re-imaged, making sure to check medium (recommended) compression and intelligent sector copy.
Still NO-GO on either a clone or an image restore and I have “Replace with the Master Boot Record
from the backup (recommended)” checked. Macrium still coughs up a furball on insufficient space.
Tried it with the SSD completely blank, formatted as one large NTFS partition, and again with partitions
sized identically to the Lappy’s hard drive – with the same results and I don’t see any other options in settings. 🙁

Note: I’m using the free edition of Macrium; do I need to purchase the Pro Version?

Item 2 in that article, “Enable ReadyBoost to Speed Up Modern PCs”

One thing that will make the ReadyBoost arguement moot is to install a SolidStateDrive.
I got this after replacing my spinning disk with a SSD. 😀

1 more vote for Thunderbird. 🙂

      I have mine setup to retrieve e-mail via POP on 4 accounts;
      2 on Cox.net, 1 G-mail, and 1 work private-domain.com

Also use MozBackup weekly to save all my account settings, address books, and e-mail folders.
Been doing this for 5+ years with no problems.:D

    • in reply to: Can’t restore mail forwarding in gmail #1398722

      Hi Gary,
I have seen this type of problem in many Web-Based accounts, not just e-mail but Forums, newsletters, subscription accounts such as Ancestry.com etc.

The trick here is – when you make any change to your on-line account settings or profile, after you make the change on-line –
      1) Log-off and close your Web Browser.
      2) Delete your computer’s Temporary Internet Files and Cookies.
      3) Re-open your Web Browser and Log back in to the account.

Sometimes, with some accounts you even have to take an extra step (I have to do this when I want to change the avatar pic on one of my accounts)
1a) In the account settings or edit profile screen, Remove the OLD value and save the change, then do steps 1-3 above.
      4) Go back to account settings or edit profile, Enter the NEW value (In my avatar pic example, uploading the new pic) and save the changes.

      Hope this helps. :D:
