    • in reply to: Word won’t start (2000) #625096

      James,

I had the same problem with Word 2000 and did much of what you have described, to no avail. You probably have a corrupted Normal.dot file. My solution was to search for Normal.dot and delete it! Look for Normal.dot in your Templates folder. First, rename Normal.dot file to ‘bad’ or whatever suits you. Second, start Word 2000. Third close Word 2000. Fourth, restart Word 2000. It should now start without hanging up. After that I delete the renamed ‘bad’ Normal.dot. Please note that you will lose any specific styles you have set up in Normal.dot which you can set up again. Oh, and periodically make a backup of Normal.dot. Good luck and hang in there.

    • in reply to: FP XP and DIV (2002) #618148

We just upgraded to Office XP and I use FP2000. I’ve had problems using Word XP with cutting and pasting into FP and getting all sorts of extraneous formatted HTML code. Cutting and pasting into Notepad and then copying that into FP does provide ‘clean’ code but you lose all formatting. In experimenting I found out that you can cut and paste from Word XP into FP by using the ‘Edit/Paste Special/Normal paragraphs with line breaks’ option in FP. You will lose any special Word specific formatting but you’ll get cleaner code. The only way Word Xp will give you cleaner code is to do a ‘File/Save As/Save as type/Web Page, Filtered’. The code is cleaner but NOT CLEAN.

Hope this helps – Good luck!

    • in reply to: PowerQuest Drive Image 2002 #600596

      Al,

Yes, all I have done is a Copy Drive. If all checked well (other than size) I wanted to create my first image unto the new drive with the no compression so I can compare the sizes. I’ll keep in mind the swap file info.

      Thanks!

      Al and Eileen,

      Thank you for your replies!

Al, I had to return the old hard drive to Dell. If I didn’t return it in 15 days I would have been billed $152 U.S. dollars for the replacement refurbished 80gb Maxtor they sent, otherwise it was free. I bought a new 80gb Seagate Barracuda from Dell for $92 for a ‘backup’ drive. I have MS Office 2000 Premium fully loaded, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Juno, Netzero, NAV, one of those ‘CARD’ programs with all the images on disk, etc. So, this is why the drop is size gave me great concern as I tended to install everything so as not to use the cd.

I intend to do my first backup IMAGE with the NO COMPRESSION switch this weekend. If the size changes to something normal then I’ll know that it was somehow compressed and I’ll do a restore.

Thanks again, I appreciate all of you caring loungers who help!

    • Catharine,

Thank you for replying! You don’t have to use the ‘file’ to have a successful link. I use it on the unix as well as microsoft servers. I have linked extensions such as ‘.doc, .xls, .ppt, .pdf, .txt’ without the ‘file’ reference. However, I did try your suggestion. Still no success in reaching a bookmarked area in a Word document.

      Thanks again!

      Merc, DaveA,

Thank you. Your suggestions worked. However, that causes the ‘minimized’ view to be at an almost maximum window and I lose having a minimized view. It used to always open in maximum (normal) view or click the minimum window and toggle as needed. Hey, it’s just one more click to maximize. Again, thank you!

    • in reply to: 56k access at 24k #534480

I have a Dell 4100, PIII 933, 256 mb ram, Win ME, US Robotics 56K modem with telephony. If the other posts do not solve your dilema, here’s another possibility. I had the same thing happen to me. In my case 31,200k was as fast as I could get. This past weekend I got my living room (in the United States) properly grounded. I was using a ‘dummy’ plug as my house is 60 years old and had no three plug outlets. Since then, my connections to Juno, Netzero, and Dellnet MSN come in at 50,666K and, 49K plus, etc. Maybe my system or modem have something that checks fluctuating currents. Anyway I am pleased with the results. Hope your solution is easier/swifter.

In the HTML view click on Tools, Page Options, HTML Source, Right margin: nn characters. At this point you enter the column value (nn) at which you want to wrap HTML code.

Install SR1. I went from Office97 SR2 to Office2000 Premium. I phoned Microsoft and ordered the SR1 cd (which you could have also done on the internet). I have had no problems whatsoever. The phone number as well as SR1 and SR2 release information has been delineated in Woody’s Office Watch e-zine (well worth subscribing to). In my opinion, DO NOT INSTALL the SR2 release or Outlook will have the dreaded security Woody hates. Good luck!

      Judy,

So far it’s running fine. I bought a Dell P3 with ME loaded. I only installed the PWS application from the FP 98 cd. After loading FrontPage 2000 I installed the latest server extensions. I’ve not encountered any problems. You can install the PWS from the NT pack (MS Internet Services). However, I have not used that. Good luck!

    • in reply to: My 56k access at 31.2k #522750

      Thanks Jerry,

My in-laws (who live next street over) have the exact same system and connect to the exact same provider at 50k while I stay at 31.2k. I set their system up same as mine. They do use the 6 foot phone cord that came with the system. I use a 20 cord I purchased last year. I’ll check on that. Thank you for your advise.
