Thanks, Big Al (and loungers), for your continued assistance! In checking the Drive Image website two things struck me: 1) The minimum memory needed is 256 MB and, 2) The drive image 2002 that was certified for Windows XP that we own is no longer certified for Win XP! The supported operating systems are Windows 95c or higher, NT Workstation 4.0 (SP6a), Windows Me. Hum, no XP. It works for some but not for others. To be continued…

      Big Al,

Thank you for the info. I have not received any notification yet, but I’ll be perusing the lounge for your opinion/review once you receive it. I would hope that those of us who have complained to PQ regarding the Win XP Pro problems would get either a free upgrade or a very sweet deal to move up(?) to the next version. Thanks for the heads up!

      Neal,

FYI – I have a Dell Dimension and in my experience with Dell the Win XP OS is not tweaked. Good luck! (Go Clemens tonight for number 300!!!).

    • Big Al,

Thank you very much. I got a bootable Win98 2nd Ed diskette and it worked! I still haven’t received a response from PowerQuest. Maybe they should just issue a DOS diskette type approach until the Windows version is fixed.

Yo, Woody, perhaps you can use some of your influence on PowerQuest to help some of us loungers regarding this…please?

      Carbonnb, thanks for the link.

    • Greetings,

      HELP!!!

Now Drive Image 2002 doesn’t even work from DOS (Caldera diskettes created from the DI 2002 software). I’m still getting the dreaded Memory Error #3 and I cannot perform any more backups. I sent the tech support person that responded to me in the past another e-mail regarding this issue and asked for a refund and for him to forward it to ‘the powers that be’. I think he forwarded it to the trash bin. I’ve been frustrated before (hail to the king MS) but never as much as with this software. PowerQuest doesn’t seen to care for any ‘little’ customer even though they know the software has problems with XP-Pro, SR1. There is not a hint of a fix, no promise of a free upgrade, no calls, NOTHING – $70 U.S. dollars plus tax down the toilet!

Sorry to call out for anyone in particular since many of you have helped me (directly or indirectly in someone else’s post) but, Big Al, how do you have your Win 98SE config.sys and autoexec.bat set? Maybe I can get a friend to create a DOS boot diskette with that O.S. and I’ll copy my Drive Image modules to it and try backing up the way you’ve been doing it instead of the CaCaldera way. I apologize If I’ve offended someone with that remark – I’m really frustrated.

      Thanks to all in advance.

      John,

I also have found that Word XP (2002) puts an excessive amount of overhead code in FrontPage 2000. What I have done is copy from Word to the buffer and then in FrontPage 2000 perform a Paste Special – Normal Paragraphs with line breaks (edit/paste special). This will reduce all the ‘junk’ that Word added. Note that if you have any special formatting in Word you will lose it upon a Paste Special. Anyway, play with it until you find a satisfying setting.

      Joel,

No problem! I agree with you. It’s sad that once companies have our hard earned money they throw us to the wolves. I am glad for this lounge that provides better support for us with real experience. It’s a great place and I thank all longers for their assistance! Hang in there everybody.

      Joel,

I stand corrected. I used the wrong choice of words. As you stated, a person would forfeit their right to phone support. Truly picky and dangerous if a user has very little experience ‘tinkering’ to lose that right.

    • in reply to: Install XP Pro over XP Home (XP Pro) #649301

      Peter,

Regarding the issue of void warranties… I have a Dell (4100) that came with Win ME. I wanted to upgrade to XP and wasn’t sure whether to get Home or Pro (thanks to all who replied to my post – I purchased Pro). I called Dell to check on my warranty status if I purchased a ‘different’ OS than the one that came from factory (I have lifetime tech phone support). They said that any OS related problems would NOT be supported and they would have me restore ME, etc. Then they would try to diagnose the problem from that point (duh!). However, if the OS is purchased from Dell they would continue to fully support the system and I would have access to any updates from their website. The OS is not tweaked in any way, shape or form. It’s a straight Microsoft upgrade box. I went ahead and purchased it from them ($179 U.S. dollars, free shipping, NO SALES TAX). I installed it and, after a few tweaks and perusals to this board, it’s working like a charm and much better/efficient than ME ever did. So check with Dell and see what they tell you. I have generally had a good experience with tech support.

Anyway, just my two cents and good luck!,

    • Well, I received a prompt reply from PowerQuest. It reads:

“The problem probably is stemming from the changes Microsoft made with Service Pack 1 to the file system, which was never tested with Drive Image 2002 (it was released after our product). I do no know if/when a fix will be available for Drive Image 2002 in this area.
      PowerQuest Technical Support”

Needles to say, I have replied and informed them of my displeasure. Basically I have a diskette powered backup system. And DOS was dead… Thanks to all of you who have tried to help and a very big ‘Thank You!’ to you, Big Al. As soon as I receive some update I’ll let y’all know.

    • Thanks for your assistance. I have gone ahead and filled out a ‘support’ form on the PowerQuest web site. I haven’t had the product for a year yet so hopefully they will send me an answer in a few days. Part of the procedure they require is to fill out the form and attach a file after you execute a program (program filespowerquestdrive image 2002PartInNT.exe) which sends them some drive information. We’ll see.

Regarding how I got that list of services I performed a start/run/cmd/tasklist /svc

      Attached is the task manager.

      Thanks!,

    • in reply to: Clean reinstall XP Pro (XP Pro SR1) #640961

I believe that you should be able to a ‘clean’ re-install and format of the upgrade version of Win XP Pro over an existing XP Pro installation. Be aware that you will lose everything on that drive so be sure to backup your files before you start. See Post: 189239. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to mention one more thing about DELL and restore cd’s. Dell does NOT include a System Restore cd!

They include all cd’s containing everything in the system. You have to do a number of turns and twists to get everything back, but it’s all there. You have 120 days from the day the order is placed to request an SRCD and Dell does not mention it at all. After that time frame you are out of luck. You must restore the long way. I don’t mind having all the disks but I would like the ‘all in 1’ method also!

So, if anyone is going to get a Dell (which I am pleased with except for the SRCD not being included by default), INSIST ON RECEIVING AN SRCD. “Now you know the rest of the story, … Good Day!”
