You might want to locate your profile in appdata or application data within your user account, copy it, not move it, to a backup location and then totally uninstall Firefox and allow it to remove your user data.

Then reboot, install a fresh downloaded copy of Firefox 12.0 and install it. See if it works.

If not, it’s not a corrupted profile. And if sfc/scannow doesn’t work, maybe it’s your video card? What video card are you using and by the way, what version of Windows are you using and what service pack under that version?

Sad that it is difficult to get any real satisfaction from the companies being spoofed/abused by these scammers.

I am wondering if the F.B.I. might be interested in it since they spoof them?

I just got one of these with F.B.I. in the subject in the last couple days. Was in my spam box. Deleted as junk before I read the article. I used to do more with these stupid emails but found it was totally useless too. I still forward the ones with PayPal and eBay in them to their spoof@ emails but that’s about it. There are so many LOL!

    • in reply to: Any rumors of Windows Mail-like client for Windows 8? #1319881

Yes, I agree! It was sad that Microsoft did a two fold, in my opinion, error with email. Windows Live Mail is not nearly as good as it’s predecessor, Outlook Express.

At the same time, Microsoft moved Outlook out of the Student and Home Office Edition of Microsoft Office forcing people to either stay with the old version, or buy it for nearly $80 as a separate single license.

I think these were unwise moves on Microsoft’s part.

Woody. What a fantastic article. You got everything from all angles and cut through the feldercarb to the real issues.

      Thank you.

Great link over at infoworld also.

BTW: Why can’t I post your article at Digg.com when using the complimentary link? I was so impressed with the article I tried to post it (but using the complimentary link where I clicked on story 2, but it wouldn’t post to Digg. Sigh…was able to post it to technology on Reddit though. 😉

I agree with ruirib that Cute PDF is an excellent way to print documents as PDF. Another is PDF-XChange, which is a fantastic free PDF reader though the PDF writer aspect is ad-supported and has a number of restrictions. Check out the review of PDF Writers at Tech Support Alert, Ian Richards free software review site:

      http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-pdf-writer.htm

They seem to like BullZip the most. They rate CutePDF fairly high but they take away some ratings for it not having much more than very basic PDF creation, meaning no adding security or passwords, encryption, etc. But if you are not looking for any of those kinds of extras then CutePDF sounds perfect for you! 🙂

      Thanks!

      Jim

For general purpose creation of PDFs this article hits it on the nose, and in the order they post them as well.

Definitely need certain ones for more specialized needs. And sometimes nothing will do but Adobe sadly. I steer clear of the type of PDF needs that require Adobe’s outrageously priced products where I can.

Yes…don’t want to bet the farm on the Cloud for sure. I no longer even use DropBox for most things, sneaker net via USB will work just fine. 😉

These recommendations are great if you (1) didn’t have a backup method already, and (2) generally are not concerned about nightly backups and monthly images (which is my preferred method – monthly just before any Windows Updates on Patch Tuesday).

I just found a way to maybe do just that.

Use the Windows Backup Wizard for setting Daily backups and use the Task Manager and WBADMIN over at Windows Seven Forums here:

      Try This
OK, I was looking for the same thing and read your post – once I figured it out, I decided to post the answer here as well.

In Task Scheduler, click Create Task. Click the Actions tab. Click the New button.

Leave Action on “Start a Program.” In the “Program/script” field, type in WBADMIN. Then under “add arguments,” type in:

      START BACKUP -backupTarget:X: -include:c:

. . . where “X” is the drive letter of your backup drive, and “c” is your primary hard drive.

Set the triggers, settings, and conditions to whatever you like.

Image Backup does an incremental “ghost” of your HD, adding any changes since your last Image Backup, and keeping all previous backups available as well.

Thanks to the folks at microsoft and wikipedia for the info:

The Storage Team at Microsoft – File Cabinet Blog : Learn more about system image backup

Wbadmin – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What are your thoughts on this?

If it works well, this would be the ticket to have dissimilar schedules for system images (which generally you don’t need or actually want as often), and backups (which I prefer to be nightly).

So sorry to hear about Karen’s passing.

Guess you couldn’t ask for better than to pass in your sleep but Karen will be greatly missed among those of us who have used her KarenWare Power Tools for so many years and read her articles at WinMag in the old days before their demise.

Windows 7 can be really picky about user data files’ perms, and sometimes causes locks on files from one account to another, but will reset perms if you copy them to the main part of the c: drive (root of c:) and then back into a new account from there.

So, I would suggest the following:

Create a directory off the root of c: called patsbackup or something you would recognize.

Copy all of Pat’s files (currently in Patricia account that’s been renamed Pat, I would imagine) to that directory.

Rename the Patricia account that you renamed to Pat (but the folders don’t correspond), to some other name Patricia2 or something. Doesn’t really matter as long as it’s not Pat.

Now, create a new account: Pat

This new one will have the right folder names under Users for Pat.

Move your files from the backup folder on root of c:/patsbackup (or whatever you named it) into the new Pat account.

Now make sure the desktop’s computer name is PATSDESKTOP, if it is not already PATSDESKTOP. Steps to do that here.

Reboot the computer, and then “View or print the homegroup password” for your Homegroup from your laptop and enter the Homegroup password on the Desktop if you haven’t done that yet.

      Hope that helps.
