    • in reply to: Coming changes to the Windows Secrets newsletter #1546674

Thanks for your kind and professional reply. It it obvious that some subscribers are upset. I’m not. My subscription dates back to the original LangaList. I have increased my contribution progressively over the years, and currently pay $24/year. I based my contribution on what I was paying for PC World and PC Magazine subscriptions. I have long since discontinued my subscriptions (of course, PC World is defunct) because they became irrelevant. Not Windows Secrets, however.

      My questions about the change:
      1. Will we have continued access to the Windows Secrets archive?
      2. Will we have continues access to the LangaList archives?
      3. Will the Windows Secrets Forum continue to operate?
      4. Will we be able to communicate with the editors and writers as we have in the past?

I hate to see that the free articles will be gone. I’m afraid that the Windows Secrets free articles might be lost in a flood of articles on WinInfo. I often sent links to the free articles to friends. I have no idea how many subscribed to Windows Secrets because of their introduction to the excellent articles that could be found.

Wishing you (and us) good luck in the momentous and uncertain future.

Hi VWDRV1, these are the settings I use & have never had a problem.

I DO check the MUI Cache box on the Registry Cleaner dialog box. I allow it to be cleaned since the MUI for some reason prevents my getting into some of my WordPerfect and QuattroPro documents. I believe that Windows (I use Vista) locks the files as “open” when in fact they are just listed in the MUI. I may be wrong, but that is the conclusion that I have reached, and it works for me.

    • I had the same problem. I posted my solution in the Windows General lounge.
I did not search for this topic prior to posting my findings and solution, or I would have put it here. Moi bad.

    • Oh, and by the way, I uninstalled the defective iTunes using Revo Uninstaller. It found 316 registry items that the Apple iTunes uninstaller missed. None of the other four Apple programs had any items left over in the registry.

    • in reply to: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) #1418246

MSE got a bad rap recently, a review of anti-virus, anti-malware programs criticizing it and placing MSE at the bottom of the tested programs. It is still very useful, however, especially if you are careful about what sites you visit. There may be other reviews of this topic, but one by Leo Notenboom is succinct and encouraging. Read it at:

Thanks to all who answered. Before posting this question I read the Macrium FAQ and did a Google search, but did not find the answer. Thanks especially to CLiNT and Dick-Y.

Following Susan Bradley’s suggestions, I have held off installing .NET updates. Now, I am uncertain how to proceed. I now have nine .NET updates listed on my Windows Update panel, but Susan suggests skipping only two of the nine. I may have missed her suggestion to install the others. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. What do I do with the following:

    • in reply to: Tighten your Facebook privacy settings #1225272

There is a web site that you can use to automatically check your settings:
      http://www.reclaimprivacy.org/facebook
Add site to Favorites (a pop up tells you how when you mouse over the link).
Program has links to settings that are not secure so you can change them.
No settings at this time for the Web and Applications problem that is mentioned in the Windows Secrets article.
For Internet Explorer only at this time — the site says that there are some problems with Firefox and Chrome.
