AskWoody LoungerSo, to set it to less than fifty days, I’d create a handler with a LastAccess value, and a DWord of, say, twenty-five? Just curious.

AskWoody LoungerThanks, Mark, for the confirmation. I am almost certain the problem’s ZoomText 8.04, but since ZoomText is necessary for me to be able to adequately view fonts under 14 pts, I don’t think I’ll change anything. I never run into the problem described in the original post on my own machines.

AskWoody LoungerStuart,
Holding that combination, then using the arrow keys does nothing with WMP 10 on my machine. In fact, the combination does nothing with any application — other than generate a Windows default beep sound. I’m glad to know that it works on your machine; I’ll look for apps that have oddball keyboard shortcuts — ZoomText, et al. -

AskWoody LoungerIt still doesn’t seem to be working in XPSP2, but I know there was something like that which used to work in Win95. Can’t recall if Alt-Space-M was it or not.

AskWoody LoungerSkitterbug,
I’ve recently set up several computers using the Road Runner CA EZ Armor setup you’re using, and have had problems with the included firewall (ZoneAlarm 5.1) losing program settings. As I remember, ZA 5.1 did have a problem with not remembering settings; the problem was resolved with ZA 5.5, or a version shortly after that one. What I have done recently was to uninstall the CA EZ Armor firewall, and install the new Zone Alarm Pro, version 6.1.737.000. There are no problems with it. You can use your existing CA serial number, since it’s a legitimate ZAP number — even with the CA branding. It should update for a year, although, to be on the safe side, it probably would be a good idea to purchase ZAP from ZoneAlarm and pay the upgrade price. Anyway, it works well, and doesn’t exhibit any of the problems that the branded CA version does. No conflicts, either! Good luck! -

AskWoody LoungerSorry about the codecs answer. It seems your question is more about physically seeing the movie play in the WMP than it is on getting the player to work. I misunderstood what you were saying. The Alt-Space-V trick mentioned above in Wylly Wylly’s post post 538,167 doesn’t seem to work in XPSP2 (at least, not on my copy), so you can try what I suggested before; change your default screen resolution to something like 1600×1200 temporarily by right-clicking an empty spot on the desktop, then Properties>Display Properties>Settings. Move the slider to the right, then Apply & OK. Move the Windows Media Player to the center of the screen. At that point, set your screen resolution back to whatever it was before by following the same procedure, but move the Display Settings slider to the left.

AskWoody LoungerYou may have a corrupted codec, or the correct codec may not be installed. Or, the movie may have been recorded badly, and doesn’t actually include video. Try installing the K-Lite (full) codec package, found here , as well as the proprietary ATI codecs, found here . As to the icon flying off the right side of the screen, try increasing your screen resolution to a size larger (higher resolution) than you have now. That should allow you to grab any icons that have disappeared from view. Once you move them, revert to the lesser resolution.

AskWoody LoungerHi,
ZAP is quite different now, and the current release (6.1.737.000) works well. It just takes a little time to learn the new Program Control functions. The ZoneLabs forums ZA Forums are quite informative, should you have further questions. -

AskWoody LoungerNovember 26, 2005 at 11:36 pm in reply to: Delay starting Windows/Other Apps w/ new Motherbrd #987094Any difficulty getting on the Internet, or accessing local machines? You might want to see if there are new drivers for your NIC card. Also, did you install the chipset driver(s) for your motherboard? W2K might be trying to use the wrong chipset driver, or a very old one. What about your bios? Is it fairly new, and fully recognizing all of your hardware? Is it set to ‘No’ where it asks if you have a Plug and Play operating system? Just a couple of things to look at.

AskWoody LoungerJust a suggestion or two that will save you lots of time in the long run:
When you get JUST XP installed, and have done all of the Windows Updates, make an image on DVD. Then, when you get all of your programs loaded, and the machine’s running well, image it again. You will always be able to get back to that point in time, and won’t have to put in quite as much time the next time a problem occurs. Having a base install backup,
then a full system backup, is the way to go… -

AskWoody LoungerNot necessarily. Can you run OE 6 temporarily as an Administrator by using the ‘Run As’ feature, found by right-clicking the OE icon or shortcut? Would that solve your problem?

AskWoody LoungerNovember 25, 2005 at 3:01 am in reply to: NET Runtime Optimization Service (English 1.1 SP1) #986919The solution was to change the startup type in Services to Manual from Automatic after stopping the service. There were no dependencies, so it doesn’t seem to have harmed anything.
