Is this related to an issue with the Lounge?

Well, no. I did hover between Lounge Matters and Scuttlebutt, but decided I’d take the risk on LM as it probably ought to be brought to the attention of the WS Administration.
(Yes, I could have used the contacts on the Contact an Administrator page but… :shrug:)

Fine – but what time’s that as GMT?

By then, probably just after cocoa time.

Pigeon transfers data faster than South Africa’s Telkom | Reuters

Considering the story came out in September, I suspect the pigeons on the South Africa – Australia route had one hell of a headwind

Interesting article. But I am unsure whether the suggestion to leave the battery out of the laptop when you are running it off the mains is sensible. It may work for some models, but in others lack of the battery may result in harmful voltages as the battery is no longer there to limit these. Hard to verify without actually doing it, but be warned…

Batteries can and do act as capacitors, to an extent absorbing voltage spikes depending on their properties. But it also occurred to me that unless you have a separate UPS, you lose the inherent ability of a laptop to survive a power outage.

I CAN’T FIND ONE SINGLE WEBSITE THAT HAS OUTLOOK STAIONARY FOR 2007

Try searching for STATIONERY rather than STATIONARY or STAIONARY.

Does anyone use this software?
http://www.mikogo.com/
Does anyone know if it’s safe to use?

I was obliged to use it yesterday having developed an issue with our accounts software and the support guy used it to see exactly what was going wrong. They are probably the biggest in their sector in this country (Sage if anyone is interested ) and I can’t envisage them using something that wasn’t safe or expedient to use. It was certainly painless to log in and use – but they may have a paid account for easier access.

I am able to received emails but not send them??

Check with your ISP for the correct settings – for example, you may need authentication, or to use a specific port.

(Lots of ISP’s have FAQs with specific instructions for setting up, e.g.: 1&1 Webhosting FAQ | How do I setup Thunderbird to send and receive E-Mail? )

• in reply to: Win 7 – Squirrely time remaining on battery #1204648

The measurement of State of Charge and remaining capacity of a battery is easily and accurately implemented with today’s electronics, and the ‘meter’ should give a realistic indication of the remaining charge.

In my view, the mistake is in giving a ‘remaining time’ which, as explained by the others who have replied, is entirely dependent on usage. You would be better off monitoring the percentage figure as you use the laptop and calculate your own expected ‘remaining time’ from your own experience.

The mobile (cell) ‘phone industry seems to have grasped the idea – certainly with the handsets I have had over the last few years the ‘precise’ information has been reduced from a percentage figure to half a dozen bars. Nominal ‘standby’ and ‘talk’ times are given, but I know from my own use that the battery will last twice as long at work than it does at home, simply because reception is better and less power is needed to stay connected.

• in reply to: Mail Senders IP #1204404

You can’t get the originating client IP address unless it is the same as the mail server.

If I look at the header of an email I sent to myself using Outlook, I can see:

Received: from aaaa (hostxxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.in-addr.btopenworld.com xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx)

where aaaa = my pc name on our network and xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx = the (fixed) IP address we connect to our ISP (BT internet).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I send myself an email using the webmail interface, I can see:
X-Received: from pustefix162.kundenserver.de by xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx with HTTP id 38382709 for [me@mydomain.com]; Fri, 15 Jan 2010 18:23:59 CET
where xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx is again my fixed IP address and me@mydomain.com is the email address of the account I was using.
• in reply to: Drivers for new Hard Drive #1204399
The drive is initially set up as a SATA300. My motherboard could only process a SATA150. So I had to change the drive to a SATA150.
Which was exactly the issue referred to in one post in the link I posted above!
(“Your old SATA drive was the right speed but the new one has a 3gb/s transfer rate…”)
$7.00 for 100 jumper links is a ridiculous sum to pay. We pay about that for 1,000 but I guess they’ve got to cover the re-bagging and retail costs…
