thanks for your advice, Leif. i copied the file to the My Documents folder, then did as you said. now, there’s more trouble. i have two files: Outlook.pst and Archive.pst. when i tried to open either of them, i got a blank e-mail (just like a new one), with the file at the bottom, like either a forward or an attachment. i tried to open the file, and got this warning message:

      Attachment Security Warning

      Warning!

This file may contain a virus that can be harmful to your computer. You must save this file to disk before it can be opened. It is important to be VERY certain that this file is safe before you open it.

      File name: outlook.pst
      Type: Office Data File

it offered me the choice of Save to Disk… or Cancel, so, i clicked on Save to Disk… and told the ‘puter to put it in the folder “carol’s stuff”. i then got this message:

      Microsoft Outlook

Outlook cannot save the URL to a file. CAn’t find this file. Make sure the path and file are correct.

it offered me the choice of OK or Cancel, so i chose OK. after that, i tried to close the open/new e-mail, and got this message:

Do you want to save changes? Yes, No, or Cancel

i chose No, backed out, sat and thought a minute, and came here, to ask for more help. i don’t know what to do now. i am completely lost. could/would you please point me in the right direction? thanks again for your help, past, present and future. looking forward to hearing from you, sooner or later. until then, take care and God bless.

    • hello bruce!

okay, i am glad that you understand what i am asking. i just went into my address book, and picked out a person that i know has both name and e-mail address listed, and that has an entry in the Display field. i opened a new e-mail screen, and started to type her e-mail address in. the auto-fill (don’t know if that is the right name for it, but that’s what it does) finished up her e-mail address, but no name. i then tried it again, using her name, and the name came up. i then added your name and address just so i could try one that i haven’t used before; as soon as i started to type your e-mail address, your name popped right up. i don’t know if i am asking the right thing, or what, but i guess i am just going to have to go with whatever pops up. it’s just strange that there seems to be no consistency.

thankyou ever so much for helping me. i’m sorry that my computer is so dense that it doesn’t understand perfectly simple directions. sigh take care and God bless.

    • hello to you, too, bruce!

thanks for the help. i think, though, that i did not ask correctly, as what you answered is not doing what i want. hairout

maybe this example will explain my dilemma better:

when i start to type in a name, the name comes up, and, if they are in my address book, i know that the address is linked to that name; i have tested this a few times, much to the dismay of my long suffering, ever patient friends. when i type in an e-mail address, sometimes, part way through the address, the name associated with that address replaces the address, i.e. i start to type in, let’s say, scrazzle.fra and suddenly, part way through, Jiminy Cricket, the name associated with that e-mail address, pops up. other times, i can type in the entire e-mail address and that’s all that is there, no name, even when the name and address are in the address book. there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to this, either. scratch

i hope that i have explained it better; i can’t think of any other way to ‘splain it. once again, thankyou for your help; it’s always appreciated, even when, or maybe i should say in spite of the fact that, i don’t always understand it. until the next time (no, not a threat, simply a statement of fact!), take care and God bless.

      mark…

i know that this will show that i am a real scaredy cat when it comes to things that i don’t know or understand (such as this beast that i am not using), but i finally got around to making the registry change to change the user name. i went to the site that you gave me the link to, downloaded it, and, once i figured out where to look for the tweak, did it. it worked! i also found out where the name of the ‘puter resided, and now it’s changed, too, to something a bit more fittin’ (as we’d say down home). thanks ever so much for your help. of course, i’m going to have to do this all over again in a while, as i am having other problems, as evidenced by my other posts on the boards, and am going to settle and solve them once and for all by reformatting the darned thing, and reinstalling the programs one at a time, until i identify the trouble makers and deal with them. now, if only i knew how to go alla way back to the bare board, and start all over, starting with installing windows, but that’s a whole ‘nother horse of a different color… thankyou once again for your help; it’s been invaluable. take care and God bless.

yup, i am in IMO mode. that’s a positive. at least, once all this is over and done with, i will most certainly know how to delete and install anything having to do with office!

thanks so much for your patience with me, and for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. it means a great deal to me to know that there are people like you and the other board members, all willing to share all your hard earned knowledge with neophytes like me. it gives me hope, too. after all, we all started out not knowing anything about these darned things at one point in all our lives!

thankyou again. take care and God bless.

    • in reply to: uninstall outlook (Office2k ProSP3/Win2k ProSP4) #693849

thanks, john, for your words of wisdom concerning my problem with outlook. to quote you:

“Lady, the detect and repair is in Outlook help. The reference to uninstall of only outlook is a screen you will see when you choose add/remove programs in the control panel. If you have the option to modify, you might want to try that first. But either modify or remove should have a screen early on where you see a list of the Office programs and can uncheck outlook. That will cause outlook to be removed. (mostly).”

john, i believe that i mentioned in the initial post that i had looked for the individual programs in the add/remove programs; they are NOT there. all that is there are these entries: Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional and Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Disc 2. nowhere to be found is a listing of the individual programs. since the individual programs don’t exist, neither does the option to modify. i had one friend suggest to me that i put the original program disks in and remove it that way, but i can’t seem to find that option there, either. do you see why i am at the hairout stage?

as far as verizon is concerned, i have enough other stuff to discuss with them now, aside from this, that whoever answers the phone is going to be lit up for quite some time to come, and may have a challenge sitting for a day or three. they already don’t like to hear my name and voice over the headset… evilgrin

i must not supposed to be doing this, or making any other change to outlook, or office for that matter, as i can’t even seem to format a CR properly so that i can back up all my data, just in case i have to uninstall the entire darned office 2000 program and start all over again, but that’s a whole ‘nother story… i have only been messing around with ‘puters for about three or four years now, so it’s not as though i know a whole lot about them, but this is the first time that i have had something come this close to defeating me, and i am not a defeatist! i guess what i am is frustrated, at this point. i know that i will figure it out some way, some how, but the question is WHEN?

thankyou for your help and your time. take care and God bless.

    • in reply to: uninstall outlook (Office2k ProSP3/Win2k ProSP4) #693703

thanks for your help. the reason i want to uninstall it and start all over again is because i haven’t the slightest idea as to whether i am in IMO or CW mode, and, at this point, am not sure that i really care. i haven’t gotten any e-mail in outlook, except for the initial welcome to outlook one that comes through as soon as you set up the program, so it’s not as though i am going to lose anything. i am just so frustrated at this point that i don’t give a rip. i do thank you for showing me how to find out which is which, but to start all over again seems to me to be the best thing for me to do. after all, i only have so much hair, and it grows back very s-l-o-w-l-y. grin
thankyou once again for your help and your time. until the next time (and i am sure that there will be one!), take care and God bless.

thanks dave. i only have two questions: 1. where, pray tell, is the install/uninstaller? and 2. “Detect and Repair” under help: which help- windows or office? sorry to ask questions that probably have very simple answers, but i am a neophyte’s neophyte here, and haven’t the vaguest idea of where to look for what. thankyou for your help and for your time. take care and God bless.

    • in reply to: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 #693321

greetings from the great white north!

all y’all have me scared now, as i just finished updated my ‘puter and installed both service packs. i’m afraid to do anything. should i just go ahead and do whatever it is i need to do, until the thing “blows up” bouncenburn in my face, or worse yet, my husband’s, or uninstall both service packs and await further information? this is what i get for not checking the boards first before i do something….

ah well… until something happens, take care and God bless.

    • in reply to: downloading multiple files #690901

      okay david-

i downloaded it, fine. now, if only i could figure out how to use it… when i clicked on the files that i wanted to download, i got a screen that said that it (the program) detected that the files were actually HTML, and that it was recommended that i either choose Yes to open the link or No to download. i chose No, as all i wanted to do was download the files, then everything disappeared. where did my downloads go? hairout how do i use this thing? confused the info that i found, and printed, doesn’t make much sense to me. if you’d like, could and would, and if you don’t mind, please explain it to me, off board, probably, as i can foresee this taking some time. my profile shows that i accept private e-mails, so have at it, if you have the time.

i do thankyou for your help, however, and for pointing me in the direction of this program, especially since it’s free! those are the best kind, as far as i am concerned. until the next time, take care and God bless.

no, david, i hadn’t, but only because i didn’t know that such things existed. doh i’ll take a look around, and see what’s out there, aside, of course, from the program that you so kindly suggested. i like to try things on for size before i commit myself, as resources are always tight, and it behooves me to be frugal (not the word i want, but you get the idea?) with my sweetheart’s money. hey, if something will make the registry changes for me, and work right at the same time, that’s okay fine by me! thanks for your suggestion. take care and God bless.

thanks for the thought, cowboy. went in and tried it, but it didn’t work; the file just sat there and looked at me. guess i’ll have to either find another way around it, crossfingers or just put up with it. sigh take care and God bless.

    • in reply to: norton systemworks (win 2K) #687674

      hello bob!

i haven’t tried the filecopy yet, but i did want to answer your ZoneAlarm question whilst i remembered to do so. i also have verizon DSL, and, when i recently called them for some tech support help (long story), i mentioned that i was using ZA, and they told me, flat out, that i should find another firewall, as they had “problems with” it, and had “had them for quite some time.” of course, the tech person wouldn’t (couldn’t?) give me any examples, just the statement. rather than mess around with it, i chose the NIS solution. the norton firewall confuses me immensely. there is a virtual pet site that i play at daily, and i have to disable the firewall during portions of my play, as i have no idea what settings i need to change in order not to be blocked. heck, even when i tell it what is, and is not spam, i still get e-mails that are marked “Spam Alert.” i am surprised that i have any hair left at this point! hairout ah well… sigh thanks for offering to help me through the trials and tribulations of NSW. many moons ago, when i originally chose it, i was certain that i was doing the right thing.

just out of curiosity, what speeds are you supposedly getting (signed up for, i guess is what i am asking) from verizon? we’re paying for, and now, since we spent a nice chunk of change having a new ‘puter built, pretty much getting 768KB download and 128KB upload. they just dropped the monthly price, too, fanfare which makes it hurt not so much.

thanks once again for all your help. until the next time, take care and God bless.

    • in reply to: norton systemworks (win 2K) #687427

      greetings bob!

okay… i just did a search on the hard drive, and found a file by the name of gapi32.dll; it’s in C:ProgramFilesCommonFilesSystemMapi1033NT. that sure doesn’t look like where you told me it is on your machine. i’ll go look for it later on the CD, and see where it is there. it’s the same size, though, so i guess it’s the right one. i sometimes wonder how things get to where they do, especially since it sure wasn’t with my help!

as far as NSW, i found the 2003 edition of it at newegg.com for about $23, i think it was, so that will probably be the way i go. i am almost sorry that i just didn’t do that to begin with when i bought Norton Internet Security (to upgrade NAV and provide a firewall. it seems that verizon DSL (our ISP) has some “challenges” with ZoneAlarm, and i need a firewall.) something about 20/20 hindsight…

as far as ladyleadfoot (all lowercase, actually), i came by it honestly; i will tell you the tale off the board, as it’s not really germane to this chain of thought.

my friends that use mcafee feel the same way about norton. sigh i use the darned program (norton, that is), but it keeps me quite confused; may i consider you my Norton specialist?

thankyou for your help; i greatly appreciate it. until the next time, take care and God bless.

      hello bob!

thanks for taking the time to write back. i am not using winXP, however; i am using win2000 professional. would that make a difference? i’m not very computer savvy when it comes to utilities, so i just let the OBS do its thing, and it seems to work well for me, except in these cases. i guess, if it really bugs me, and using a newer version of systemworks is my only choice, that i may have to break down and invest the cash. still, i can hope that someone can at least tell me how to find, and install, the necessary (missing) file, gapi32.dll, that is being called for. that would be one thing that would be helpful. thanks once again for your thoughts on the matter. you’re the first person that i have come across that has been able to answer a norton question for me; everyone else that i know, and have asked, uses mcafee. ah well…. take care and God bless.
