AskWoody Loungerhi joe!
i think that is what i am trying to do, and haven’t been able to do. that’s what i am asking help for. i don’t know if i am using the program wrong, i.e. not making the right choices from the menus, or simply that i don’t know what i am doing.
here is what i want to do, plain and simple: i have a whole lot of .avi files that i want to be able to watch on my television, using the dvd player that is hooked up to it. copying the files to a dvd doesn’t do it; i can only watch them on the ‘puter. what do i need to do in order to watch them on the television? is nero capable of doing what i need? if so, could/would you, or someone else here, please tell me what or how to do it? if nero won’t do it, is there anything out there that will let me do so? of so, what is it? what is it named? how much, if any, does it cost, and where can i find it? my hard drives are close to being completely full, and i am close to
!
i hope that i have explained myself somewhat better than i did before. thanks for any help that you have sent, or will send, my way. until the next time, take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerhi doc!
i hadn’t thought about the age thing. as far as a new player is concerned… we have a new one, one that not only plays discs of all formats (not including blu-ray or the other hi-def one; those discs are way too ‘spensive!), but also records, and transfers vhs to dvd (since we have so many vhs tapes that aren’t available on dvd- figures….). the problem with that is that there is no way to connect the new player and the television together; the connectors are incompatible. i hate to get rid of the television, as the picture on it is perfect (okay, so it’s not a 50 inch screen {only nineteen}), with beautiful color and clarity of image. the sound runs through our stereo, which is over thirty years old. it’s beginning to get to where it needs replacing, but i hate to get rid of something just because it’s old. heck, if that were the case, i’d have to get rid of my husband, and then find someone to throw me away!
i’ll try copying the files to a dvd disc, and ask someone that has newer equipment to play it for me. maybe that will help, or, at least, give me a starting point.
y’know… it’s hell being a ’60s gal in a 21st century world. i guess maybe i’ll simply have to upgrade the entire house, when the funding becomes available. until then, i’ll just keep on doing the best i can with what i have, and asking for help here in the lounge. thanks for your help, doc. until the next time, take care and God bless.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 24, 2008 at 4:19 pm in reply to: Address book/contact files part of .pst file? (Out #1098961hello hans…
thanks for pointing me in the correct direction as to how to combine the two. once i figured out that they were not one and the same, i did wonder why there were two different ways to save address info.
i still have the one question that remains unanswered: is the contacts folder an integral part of the .pst folder, or do i need to save it separately? if it is integral, then i need not worry. if it is not, then how would i go about saving it by itself?
thanks again for your help. take care and God bless.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2008 at 5:32 am in reply to: outlook 2000 to outlook 2007 (office2007pro/XPpro) #1097458thanks, joe. i think i’ve found the folder i need. the path wasn’t quite the same; i think that some things have gotten misplaced over the last year or two.
anyway, in the folder i found, there are three files: extend (Video CD Movie- 2kb); outlook.pst.mbkp (MBKP file- 114,672kb); and outlook (Office Data File- 150,064kb). would the last one be the one that i want- the .pst file? i haven’t opened my e-mail for the last couple days, as i don’t want to change anything until i know i am right- or wrong.
if this is the one i want, do i simply move that file to another folder somewhere, say, in My Documents, and copy it to a disk, to be on the safe side, then install the 2007 version of office, then do what you told me to do in the first reply? after that, i should be okay? none of my other files, word docs, excel worksheets, etc. will be adversely affected, or is there something there that i have to worry about, too?
oh, one other thing, too. do i have to do anything special with my address book, or will it carry over just as it is? i finally figured out how to make it do what i wanted, and display in the proper manner; i’d hate to lose all that hard work.
i hate to keep on pestering you about this, but it’s rather important to me that i get it right, the first time. thanks for all your help; i really appreciate it. until the next time, take care and God bless.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 11, 2008 at 9:34 pm in reply to: outlook 2000 to outlook 2007 (office2007pro/XPpro) #1097003hi joe!
thanks for the reply. only one problem, though… i don’t have any such file name/path. i can’t find application datamicrosoftoffice . mine looks like this: C:Documents and Settingsmy user nameDesktop%SystemDrive%Documents and Settingsmy user nameApplication DataMicrosoftSystemCertificatesMy . there were three files within the last folder: Certificates, CRLs and CTLs .
i can’t seem to find MicrosoftOffice anywhere. when i do a search on the C and F drives (the F drive is a WD 500GB external hard drive recently installed), i get all the earlier backup files from memeo (software that came along with the hard drive. shoulda stuck with windows drag and drop, windows backup, norton ghost or something else for backup, i guess…), and a bunch of archive files, but nothing is dated any later than 10 january 2008, which is when i stopped using the memeo software. there are no files, archives, or backups between 9 septembre 2006 and 10 january 2008, either. all the files are dated in 2005 and 2006, aside from the january 2008 ones. i also don’t understand where the archive files are coming from, as i have never (all right, everyone, get ready to cringe!) archived any of my outlook files. i don’t understand what archiving is or does. i haven’t done so because i have been, and am, afraid that i would lose all my files. i guess that adds insult to injury, yes?
i also have no idea where the %SystemDrive% folder came from. it simply appeared on the desktop one day. i think it showed up ’round about the time i installed the WD exterior hard drive, if that helps… since it didn’t seem to be doing anything, or harming anything, i just left it alone. guess i shouldn’ta, hunh?
all this is beginning to worry me greatly. all i want is to find my .pst file, copy it, move it, then install office 2007, put the .pst file back where it belongs, and go about my business. is that too much to ask?
i guess that i’ve really put my foot in it this time, yes? i swear that, as soon as i get this all straightened out, with files back where they belong, and properly backed up (maybe even archived, if i can ever figure out what it is, and how to do it), i’ll do a proper backup on a regular basis, with software that i at least recognize, and know how to use. (that’s the only problem with new stuff, to me, at least: the features that i want to use are always either the most complex, or have been hidden someplace where it can’t be dug out by anyone that’s not a software whiz or guru!
)
as always, any help that you can send my way is greatly appreciated. i eagerly and anxiously await your reply. until then, take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerno matter how many entries i make into the address book, the only ones that show are the ones that have e-mail addresses. i try to search for the other entries by name, only to have outlook tell me that there are no such entries. yet, if i attempt to enter the same person again, i get a message telling me that this is a duplicate entry, and it asks me if i want to make it a second separate entry, and if so, it will save the first entry in the deleted file folder. how can there be a duplicate entry when the first one can’t be found? i feel as though i am caught in an mc escher pic…
is there any way that i can make all the entries show up? it took me almost three weeks to figure out that the only entries that were showing were the ones with e-mail addresses. i’ve lost track of how many times i have deleted the address book and started over again. it’s almost enough to make me go back to office 2000 pro, and its version of outlook.
i just want to be able to keep all my friends’ and business contacts’ information in one address/phone book, like i did with my real, live, honest to whoever paper address book and outlook 2000. can anyone out here help me? thanks for any help that you may pass my way. until then, take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerjoe-
yes, i’ve kept up to date on the patches; that’s something that i am a bit of a fanatic about. most of the time, the m/s website told me that i was up to date. now, i’m almost afraid to do any more updating, though, for fear that i’ll mess things up. any ideas?
one of us (my friend, not my husband. he thinks that i am tech support for the ‘puters) found it while doing a search for IE. i wanted to see what it looked like so i could uninstall it. now that you mention it, i believe that’s how my friend managed to get IE running, using the version with no add ons. as i think i said, not having IE isn’t important to me, but it drives my husband crazy, and that’s not a good thing when we’re on the road together.
thanks for your help. take care and God bless.

went to pcpitstop, and here is what the results told me:

there were yellow flags for the hard drive (defrag) and cache overflow and a red flag for security issues. i have copied their suggestions down, and will give them a shot. before you say anything, i have tried, as recently as two days ago, to defrag the hard drive, to no avail. all it did was sit there. i know what it’s supposed to look like, even if i’m not using norton any more (i miss norton!, at least the utilities. maybe i’ll treat myself to them again.), and still, the screen just sat there, and didn’t show any activity at all. i do my best to maintain the beast in tiptop shape; that’s why all this is driving me
!!!!!
i’m afraid i don’t quite understand what you mean by not formatting the old drive. i have already backed up all the data that is on it. how would i connect it as a slave drive? i had thought about using it for all my programs and the larger drive strictly for data, if i were certain that it worked properly. is it possible to have one drive formatted with one operating system and the other with another?
thanks again for your help. i’m eagerly awaiting the next chapter. until then, take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerto answer your questions, bob…
it takes a bit longer to boot than it used to, but i haven’t timed it, especially since i never did before. it’s a subjective thing, i know, but it does seem to take longer.
mcafee is set to do a scan daily at 2000. there are times when i’ll do one just for the heck of it, especially when something seems hinky. needless to say, i’ve been scanning a whole lot lately.
the slow down is more noticeable when on the ‘net. it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to almost 5 minutes to get to pages that i used to be able to get to as soon as i could type in the URL and click. once there, it takes as long as, if not longer, to navigate around the site.
with the task manager, i didn’t see anything unusual, except for when i went to http://www.neopets.com. any time i went to any page/window/screen (whatever you want to call it) on the site, the CPU usage would jump to 100% for a second or three, then drop back down to 2-4%, usual usage, i guess.
on another note: i called the person that owns the company that built the beast today, to see if they were going to be at the ‘puter show in chicopee tomorrow, so that i could take the beast in to have them look at it for me. no, but he did take the time to call me back and help me as much as he could on the phone. he had me create a new user account, just in case the one that we use is corrupted. when we tried to do that, we had to do a work around, as i couldn’t add a new account from control panel/users and accounts. something had me blocked; it was all greyed out. he figured out the work around and then we created the new account, and restarted the beast. things are still as slow as they were before.
i’m at a loss here, as you may have noticed. tomorrow, i am going to buy a new hard drive, current is 80gb; i’m going for 250 or 300gb, and am considering buying winXP pro, and starting all over again. maybe win2k pro is just tired and corrupted. i was going to wipe the hard drive and reinstall it tonight, but thought better of it. no sense in doing so if i’m going to buy a new hard drive. nonetheless. i am open to any and everything that you suggest for me to try.
for your help, and, as always, it’s great to see you again. until the next time, take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerthanks for your words of wisdom, stuart. i kinda figured that things like that could happen. after all, it seems that, if it’s going to happen, i’m the one that it will happen to. sounds as though maybe i should start looking for a new beast; i’m going to the ‘puter show tomorrow to buy some ink and a new hard drive, so maybe i’ll price them, too. it’s been about three years or so since this one was built.
thanks also for telling me where to find task manager. i finally found it last night after i looked it up in the book on windows that i have. felt kinda dense when i realized what it was, and where.
have a wonderful day, and take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungeronce i find it (gotta look up where it is, if it isn’t what and where i think it is), what do i do with it? what do i look for, i guess i am asking. thanks for the suggestion. i knew there was some place that i could look to see what was using resources, but i didn’t know what it was called, or where it was, or what to do with it. i know how to use most of the programs that i install, but i don’t know much about utilities, especially the ones that come with windows.
take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerhi bob!
long time no see. hope all is well. well, glad to know that it doesn’t seem to be a fried cpu. that’s a major relief.
yes, i have done so, that is, clear out all the files. i have also run the malware removers, having installed them earlier for yet another problem that i had.
yes, i have kept the virus definitions up to date, and run mcafee daily.
yes, i have kept windows updated.
all this is why i am at a loss. thanks for not overloading me too terribly much. i’m so worn out right now, between this and some other things that are running my life (yeah, you read it right!)
, that i can only handle so much.
will eagerly await your next chore/suggestion. until then, take care and God bless.

AskWoody Lounger‘lo kaplinb!
well, i don’t remember if i did everything in that order (wish that i had known that there was a required order!), but i do know that i rebooted between installations. i definitely did the printer before office. i always do all drivers before any software packages. i listed the installations in the order i remembered them. as i mentioned to joe, i am running win 2000 with SP4 (i use the original disk for the installation, and the service packs come when i do the updates), and IE 6 with SP1 (same with IE. i believe IE5 is what comes with win 2000, then anything else is because of updates). sorry that i didn’t mention this info at the time; i’m still enough of a neophyte not to realize that that info was important.
i checked the event log, as you requested, and this is what happened. as soon as i hit enter, i got the following message: The event log file is corrupt and there was a big X over the system log. i checked each of the individual logs, and this is what i found. the security log was blank. the system log was blank, with this message at the top of it: Unable to read the contents of this event log. for he application log, all incidents of IE say error next to them, with event codes of mostly 1000, and an occasional 1001. these started on 9 august 2006. there are warnings for ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0 (event code 0f 1020) and load perf (event code of 3009). if you want, i will copy one of each of these in full if you need them. there were so many for IE that i wasn’t sure how many you needed. for the warnings, i wasn’t sure if you wanted them at all. please let me know, and i will gladly provide you with whatever you need.
thanks for being so specific. there are a lot of things in the underlayers of the beast that i have either no idea that exist, or no idea what to do with them if i do even know what they are! thanks again for your help. take care and God bless.

AskWoody Loungerhello joe!
thanks for the article. yes, i did apply all the patches that were existent when i got home, and have run the updates once or twice since then. i guess that, according to kaplinb, the problem was caused by me, since i am running SP4 for win 2000, and IE 6 with SP1. i’ll have to contact M/S to get the fix. this is the first time that i have had an update cause me grief. well, when i do it, i do it right. will post when i get everything sorted out, or if i need more help, whichever comes first. thanks again. take care and God bless.
