AskWoody LoungerSo a wireless access point allows clients to attach to the original router without significant configuration, yes?

AskWoody LoungerThanks to everyone for their comments … I ended up using a solution called TVersity which and works rather well
I also bought a cheap second hand 20Gb drive from a colleague which should do for now … I do have a 120Gb 2.5″ SATA at home (an IBM/Hitachi Travelstar HTS541612J9SA00) which I might be able to upgrade but I’ve heard that the process can be a bit fussy.

AskWoody LoungerGiven that the files are already on a Windows 2003 share and I understand that an XBox can map to such a share is there anyone who knows how this can be done?

AskWoody LoungerOK,
So suggestions, some from other friends/forums, are CHKDSK PC Inspector and Recuva.
Do you see any issues with any of these and what order do I try them in (some may be more destructive than others).
My best guess would be:
1. CHKDSK (what harm can it do?)
2. PC Inspector (since it accesses files rather than the whole partition)
3. Recuva (partition recovery)Any others thoughts?

AskWoody LoungerIt was definitely the motherboard at fault … I wasn’t able to easily source the board I wanted so I ended up buying an ASUS P5B motherboard.
Thanks for the help

AskWoody LoungerIndeed … and as it should support my current kit I can slide new (enhanced) components in without my lovely “accountant” (ahem) finding out and giving me an ear bashing

AskWoody LoungerStuartR:
It is certainly a credible cause, but it would be best to find some way of testing it! I guess a motherboard isn’t that expensive in the overall scheme of things, but it would be really frustrating to buy one and find it doesn’t solve the problem.True and, on the assumption that the other components are OK (see below), I am attempting to find a better motherboard (which supports potential more advanced CPU’s etc.) that is compatible with everything I’ve got and have, in fact, identified a FOXCONN motherboard (P9657AA-8EKRS2H) which was the recommended Intel 775 board in the PC Pro magazine (UK) for nearly a year getting supplanted earlier this year so it should be good, by now should be cheap and takes CPU’s up to quad core.
StuartR:
Do you have a spare PSU you can use to verify that this isn’t the cause? No, but I could buy one for about £20 I suppose … considering my trade & interests I really should have a test bench for this kind of thing. I gave the PSU and motherboard to a friend to test and he has just returned the CPU, memory and video reporting them as AOK.
Jeremy:
When you boot, put your hand on the hdd (or listen intently), can you feel/hear the disk spin up? That will rule out the power supply for you. When you attempted to hook up the new usb bay, was everything unplugged/powered off/grounded?I’m fairly sure they do but I won’t be able to test that until Monday as my friend has both that and the motherboard and we work from home on different days (Thursday & Friday).
Thanks for the replies guys

AskWoody LoungerNovember 2, 2008 at 8:08 pm in reply to: What Am I Doing Wrong With My Network? (Server 2003/SP1) #1131138Hi Jeremy,
I’m not using any firewall except the one in the router itself and that is only the gateway, no internal network requests travel via the router (well except the media PC and I don’t care about that).

AskWoody LoungerThanks … I was very lucky in that no one else bid so I got a new RAID card for £9 which had a Buy It Now of £57 and in fact gets sold in some shops for a staggering £750!!!! And it works!
Unfortunately (nothing to do with the post I raised) it doesn’t work with VMWare ESX 3.x which is what I really wanted it for (ESX only properly works on SCSI or SAN) so I’ll probably have to use VMWare Server instead.
