      PUB2000: Linked Picture Files Are Also Embedded [Q254203]

      PSS ID Number: Q254203
      Article last modified on 02-16-2000

      WINDOWS:

      ======================================================================
      ——————————————————————————-
      The information in this article applies to:

      – Microsoft Publisher 2000
      ——————————————————————————-

      SYMPTOMS
      ========

      When you use the “Link to File” option to link to an inserted picture in a
      Microsoft Publisher 2000 publication, the file size of the publication is
      increased by the same amount that would occur if you embedded the picture in the
      publication.

      CAUSE
      =====

      This behavior occurs because Publisher 2000 stores an embedded copy of any
      inserted picture, whether or not the picture is linked to an external picture
      file on disk.

      When you link to a picture file, you can use Graphics Manager to manage or to
      update the picture dynamically.

      STATUS
      ======

      Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Publisher 2000.

      MORE INFORMATION
      ================

      To start Graphics Manager:

      1. Start Publisher 2000.

      2. Point to Commercial Printing Tools on the Tools menu, and then click Graphics
      Manager.

      PUB2000: File Link Error Message When Opening Publisher [Q212647]

      ======================================================================

      ——————————————————————————-
      The information in this article applies to:

      – Microsoft Publisher 2000
      ——————————————————————————-

      SYMPTOMS
      ========

      You may receive the following error messages, when you open a Publisher document
      that contains a linked object:

      – When the server application is renamed:

      Cannot update object. Windows may be low on memory or disk space, or an
      object may not be correctly registered.

      – When you double-click the object:

      Publisher cannot launch or communicate with the OLE server program needed to
      complete this task.

      There may not be enough disk space, or there may be a problem with the server
      program. To make more disk space available, delete some unneeded files on
      your hard disk. If you suspect a problem with the server program, try
      reinstalling it. Then try this task again.

      CAUSE
      =====

      The path in the Windows Registry to the server application is incorrect.

      WORKAROUND
      ==========

      Reinstall the server application to rewrite the registry entries.

    • in reply to: Load Font Error (Publisher 2000 ) #550414

      Colin, this is a known issue with Publisher 2000. Make sure to update your Publisher installation to add the SR1a patch available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/office/publisher and go to downloads.

      Here is a kb related to this issue:

      The information in this article applies to:

      – Microsoft Publisher 2000
      ——————————————————————————-

      SYMPTOMS
      ========

      When you open a saved publication in Microsoft Publisher, you may see one or
      more fonts incorrectly listed as Status: Unavailable, in the Load Fonts Window.
      You may see this message even though the font is installed on your computer.
      When you click OK, the publication opens, and the font is available.

      CAUSE
      =====

      Fonts that do not conform to the TrueType standard may not be correctly
      identified by Microsoft Publisher.

      RESOLUTION
      ==========

      To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a
      (SR-1/SR-1a).

      To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the

      Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a)

      WORKAROUND
      ==========

      To work around this issue, open the publication anyway. If the font is installed
      in the Fonts folder, the font will be available, even though it is listed as
      unavailable in Publisher 2000.

      STATUS
      ======

      Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Publisher 2000. This
      problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

    • in reply to: Line in Printing (2000) #550412

      This is not a problem with your “printer”, but actually your printer “driver”. Visit the site of your printer manufacturer and be sure to download and update your driver to the latest version available. These drivers are free for download.

    • in reply to: Record a Macro (2002) #550411

      No Kevin, no secret. If you have found this help dialog in Publisher, this means it is essentially a documentation bug. However, this help dialog you receive is actually from the VBA program within Publisher. It appears that they missed this one smile. Look for “record” a macro possibly in Publisher 11.

    • in reply to: No Field Codes, right? (2002) #550410

      You are correct. Publisher does not support field codes. The only way around this would be by using Word and OLE into Publisher.

      Kevin,

      Could you send me the file that you are having trouble with? Make sure it is saved as Publisher 2000. Email to publisherhelp@kvalcom.com

    • in reply to: SaveAs 2000 no workie (2002) #543244

      Kevin,

      I have seen this issue more often lately. I will be checking with my contacts in the Publisher division tonight about this to see what’s going on. I will post back.

    • in reply to: Where can i get a demo disc? (2002) #543242

      Publisher 2002 is available in the Special Edition Office XP with the Intellimouse Explorer.

    • No, Publisher 97-2000 does not support any type of VBA. Access is prompting you with this warning, not Publisher.

      Publisher 2002 has finally added the much requested VBA support.

    • in reply to: Resolved: Arrow keys stop working #530776

      Yes, Publisher will work in Safe Mode.

    • in reply to: Resolved: Arrow keys stop working #530774

      Kevin,

      I still would check this out in Safe mode to see if it happens…don’t forget! 😉

      BTW, I love Publisher 2002 🙂
