Just to update you on this, Publisher 2002 and Publisher 2003 allow you to insert hyperlinks without having to convert to a website. That is a new feature since Publisher 2000. 2cents

This file size issue was addressed in the release of Publisher 2002. Compression was improved with the release of 2002 as well as the upcoming Microsoft Publisher 2003.

    • in reply to: file viewer for Publisher files (Publisher 2000) #585381

There are no viewers for Publisher of any version.

      Publisher 1.0, 2.0, 95, 97, 98, 2000 and 2002 are all developed
in a proprietary format which has some intense graphic use. It’s
not very likely that we will see a viewer any time in the near
      future.

However, there are workarounds. These work arounds will either require
you or the sender of the Publisher file to have access to Publisher.

Publisher 2002 will allow you to convert the publication to:

      1. A graphic, such as jpeg, tif, gif, etc. In Publisher 2002, go to
File>Save As> and in the files of type choose which graphic type you
would like to save the file as. Once saved, you can then email this
file as an attachment. Once the recipient receives the file, they
will only need a drawing/paint program (like MS Paint for example) to
      view the file.

      2. As an embedded html email. In Publisher 2002, go to File>Send To
mail recipient. You will be prompted “this page only?”, and choose
yes. This will require the use of an Outlook product on your computer
as well as the ability for the recipient to read html/rich text mail.
The subject line is filled in with the name of the publication.

Publisher 2002, 2000, and 98 will allow you to convert the publication to:

      1. A gif file for recipients to open in a paint/drawing program. For
      directions visit:

      http://www.mvps.org/publisher/conversions.htm

      2. An *.mht file. An *.mht file can be viewed by recipients using Microsoft
Internet Explorer 6x, 5x and 4x. This also reduces file size for portability.
      For directions visit:

      http://www.mvps.org/publisher/conversions.htm

      3. As an .html file which can be viewed in most any browser on the market,
as long as they are version 4.x or greater. For directions, visit:

      http://www.mvps.org/publisher/conversions.htm

      4. eFax Messenger. Easy to Send eFax Messenger Plus adds a new button to the menu bar
or File menu of your favorite programs. One click and eFax Messenger Plus
automatically does the rest all within seconds:

      It converts the open document into a rich, full color format optimized for email;

It combines the document with eFax Messenger Plus’s free eFax Messenger Viewer
the only software needed to view and print an eFax Messenger Plus document
      to create a “portable” document that can be opened by anyone;

It launches your email software ;and It attaches the “portable” document
to a new message, ready to be addressed and sent. There’s no easier way
      to send email attachments!

Easy to Receive Whoever receives your message just double-clicks on the
attachment and: The free eFax Messenger Viewer opens and The document is
displayed ready to be viewed and printed. Your attachment looks and prints
just like the original, but the receiver doesn’t need to own, buy,
      download, or install anything.

Again, this can be found at my site.

      5. As a *.PDF file. You convert and send your Publisher file to recipients
in PDF format. All they needs is a *.pdf reader, such as Adobe Acrobat 5,
      which is free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
To convert your Publisher file, you will need a utility such as Adobe Acrobat,
or even a free *.pdf converter. For a free converter, you can visit:

      pdfFactory at http://www.fineprint.com/software/pdffacto…dard/index.html

      Win2PDF at http://www.daneprairie.com (For Windows NT/2000 only)

GhostScript at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/ (For Windows 9x)

If you have any further questions, please feel free to post back and ask!

    • in reply to: Setting defaults ((Pub2002)) #585380

While there is no nice “button” to do this, the following is
      the recommended avenue:

      1. Launch a blank Publication

      2. Go to Format>Text Style

      3. Select “Change this style” (Normal)

      4. Under Click to change, Customize the default fonts, lists etc.

      5. Choose OK to all the preceding dialog boxes

      6. Go to File>Save, and choose the correct Application Data Folder
      that applies to you

      For Win98 or Win95 or WinME (usually) C:WindowsApplication DataMicrosoftOfficeNormal.Pub

      For Win NT4 (usually) C:WinNTProfiles%ProfileName%Application DataMicrosoftOfficeNormal.Pub

      For Windows 2000 (usually) C:Documents and Settings%ProfileName%Application DataMicrosoftOfficeNormal.Pub

I hope this helps! If you have any futher questions, please let us know!

    • in reply to: Colours gone haywire (Publisher 98) #583553

The color issue you are experiencing is related to you your appearance settings for Windows not being set to standard, or your video driver.

This is more than likely a problem with your video driver.

First thing I would recommend is restarting your computer in ‘Safe Mode’.
To get to Safe Mode, you would want to restart your computer and press “F8”
at the beginning of the boot. Once prompted, choose ‘Safe Mode’. Once in
‘Safe Mode’, attempt the same procedure with Microsoft Publisher. If the
publication works, then we will now assume the problem lies within your
      video driver. Restart.

Visit the website of your video card manufacturer, such as ATI or Voodoo for
example, and visit the downloads/drivers section. Search for the video driver
that represents the model that you are using and download the driver. I
would make sure you select “Save” when prompted for download, not “Run”.
Now double click the file and choose setup.

Once downloaded and setup, use the follow procedure to change your
      video driver:

      1. Right click anywhere on your Desktop, and choose Properties.

      2. This will open Display Properties. Choose the “Settings” tab

      3. Click on the “Advanced Properties” Button

      4. On the “Adapter” Tab, Choose “Change”

      5. Now you should see “Select Device”. If your new driver is listed, select
      that model.

      6. If not, choose “Have Disk”, and browse to the location where you setup the
      new driver.

      7. Now choose “OK”. Be sure to have you Windows CD available, as you may be
      prompted for this.

      8. After setup and install is complete, restart your computer.

This should fix your troubles. If not, either contact your video card
manufacturer directly and inform them of the problem you have experienced, or
turn down your hardware acceleration. This will be at least a possible
temporary fix until you get a response from the tech support from your video
card manufacturer. The steps to turn down your hardware acceleration is
      as follows:

      1. Right click on “My Computer”

      2. Choose “Properties”

      3. On System Properties choose the “Performance” Tab

      4. Under advanced settings, choose “Graphics”

      5. Change hardare acceleration to “None”

      6. Choose OK and OK again

      7. Restart computer

(You don’t necessarily have to go all the way to None. You could try one
notch at a time, but that will require a restart for each notch).

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we will help troubleshoot the problem.
