Thank you very much for providing me with a list of solutions. I am not the originator of this document, so I don’t know what thought processes went into creating it.

Your suggestion about the multilevel list is interesting. I had no idea that was even a feature. I will look further into it.

One question about this though, then I will leave you alone 🙂 Do you know if there is a way to strip all styles from this document and then apply the multilevel list to the document?

Again, thank you very much for your time.

OK, here is the (heavily) sanitized version. The problem remains if you delete the page break just in front of section 8.0. However, if you delete the page break just in front of section 5.0, the problem doesn’t happen there.

    • in reply to: Is Windows Firewall adequate (Win7) #1207369

I installed Comodo Firewall on my Windows 7 32-bit laptop about a month ago. The install went smoothly and I’ve had no problems since. Granted it’s a PIA for a few days as Comodo keeps popping up to ask if it’s OK for various programs and services to access the internet, but that goes eventually goes away if you let it remember the permissions. The only time I see the popup now is if I am actually doing something that would cause that type of access, such as installing a new program. In this case, I know what is causing the access.

I don’t really like a firewall that just lurks in the background and doesn’t let you know that it is actually doing it’s job, if it is at all. That’s sort of like believing a politician when he or she says, “Trust me.” I tried Security Essentials with the Windows Firewall before I installed Comodo but, knowing Microsoft’s reputation for “feature poor” utilities (e.g. Windows Firewall), I didn’t feel comfortable with it. I’ll keep using Comodo.

I have run across only 2 of these programs and one of them was a special version of Quicken or Quick Books. I think it was in the early XP days.

Yes, you can NOT add a WORKING short cut to the All Users area, as the program (NOT Windows) is written not to allow it. I think we tried and it would start up the program and then a error message pop up such as “Access denied” or such and then shut down the program.

Hmmmm…..that’s a pretty pi$$y way to write a program. Glad not many of those survived. And now I have another reason to hate that BLOATWARE, Quicken!

      Thanks for the replies.

Also remember that there are some programs that are licensed to ONE USER not one machine and these will only add to the installing user’s menu.

So are you saying that, if I install a “one user” program as me, I can’t make an additional shortcut to that program in the “all users” folder? I don’t ever remember using a “one user license” program, but that doesn’t seem right. In Windows, you can pretty much put a shortcut anywhere.

I can see a program asking for a username/password on startup, but not limiting the location of the shortcut that starts the program.

    • in reply to: How to Open the Start Menu Folder in Windows 7 #1185829

The Windows start menu is an ongoing pet peeve of mine. In Windows 7, M$ continues to place the start menu items in different folders. The term “all users” as used here is a lie. When I open the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu, not all of my menu items are there. Some of them are under my username folder (C:UsersJohnAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms).

When installing programs, some of the menu items go to the user’s folder and some go into the ProgramData folder. There doesn’t seem to be any apparent reason for what is put where. Since I am the only user of my computer with only one user account, why wouldn’t all of the menu items go into the same place? At the very least, there should be some way to consolidate the two if desired, other that the manual method.

But there I go, trying to apply logic to Microsoft. I should know better by now. Sigh!

    • in reply to: Completely Remove Vista (Home Basic) #1105440

Thanks to all for your replys.

I contacted Dell and they had me change the SATA setting to ATA. I had to disable the “Flash Cache” setting, but as soon as I made those changes I was able to get XP to recognize the hard drive.

      Again, thanks for your help.

    • in reply to: Completely Remove Vista (Home Basic) #1105394

      Thanks for your reply.

There is no RAID option in the BIOS.

The only hard drive option is “SATA Operation.”

Under that, there are two options:

      SATA is configured for ATA

SATA is configured for AHCI (this is the default and is the current setting)

      Any thoughts?

    • in reply to: Completely Remove Vista (Home Basic) #1105391

Thanks for your reply. I do have legit, licensed copies of Xp SP1. However, when I boot from the CD, setup says it can’t find any hard drives and the only option I have is to abort the setup. I thought it would have been that easy also, but they (Dell?, MS?) have apparently done something to “hide” the hard drives.

Thanks, Hans. It looks like your tips give me just what I needed. Woody’s is the only place to come to for Windows help.

    • in reply to: File Tooltips? #1036417

      Hans,

Thanks for your excellent reply. However, none of the Windows XP systems that I use display a tooltip when the cursor is on a filename or a folder. Is there some other setting to turn on this feature?

    • in reply to: File Tooltips? #1036180

Thanks to all who replied to my post. Everyone had excellent suggestions and I will consider all of them. It seems like the easiest thing to do right now is to use the properties/summary/comments field. I will explore the other possibilities when I get the time.

Just a thought–wouldn’t it be a great feature if a file tooltip showed the contents of that comments field? That would have been a nice Vista add-in. Here’s a chance for you software utility writers to solve a problem with your expertise.

      Again, thanks to all.

OOPS….you are correct. Must have gotten my eyes crossed when looking at that late at night. I will look into a couple of these. Thanks.

    • in reply to: New IDE Controller #1020630

      Bob,

      Thanks for the reply.

“What kind of cards have you tried? What manufacturer?” — I have tried a Sabrent card and an Adaptec card.

Why not just get an IDE add on without RAID? — I have tried to find one, but all of the ones available seem to be made for RAID–even the one your link points to.

Also, some cards require a 40 pin, 80 WIRE cable for it to be recognized properly. — The Sabrent card came with an 80 wire cable and it doesn’t make a difference with either card.
