As you are not familiar with the WD; conversantly, I have no knowledge about the Acronis.

For someone of your experience, you might find better answers than I can give by going to the WD website. Look for “My Book”, pick out a model, look for the pdf file for operating instructions and see what they offer. I know it is an automatic and continuous back up. I can go into the unit to view what has been backed up (and change it should I wish).

I don’t think I said it was free, did I? I purchased the one I use.

As with any opinion, there are often more than one side and not every one will agree.

When you are at the desktop, click on the orb. Does it open? If so, in the explorer search bar type “troubleshoot”. If any troubleshooters come up run them. If not and you can acces “computer” open it up so you can see the hard drive, right click on it, got to “properties” and open, then find the tab for “Tools” click on it and click on “error checking” and run that. There are several other diagnostic tools built in (I hope) that might be available to try, if this doesn’t work. One would be to restart your computer, hit F12 while in the black screen (as soon as it starts) and see what diagnostic tools are available to you.

If your computer is 1 1/2 yrs old, I suspect it came with Vista. Did you do a clean install to up grade to Win 7? It almost sounds as if you’re running two OS and they’re squaking at each other. If that is the case one of our more erudite monitors will want to step in to advise.

Woody “somebody” has a pretty good tutorial titled “Windows 7 for Dummies”. Stop by a bookstore and leaf through one and see if it meets your needs. I have one and it has helped point me in the right direction on lots of questions.

Maybe a little more information is in order. How old is the computer? Are you accessing from the desktop or elsewhere? Have you tried checking the safe mode to see if it is available there? Have you run any AV programs or Registry programs? Can you run any of the built in diagnostics/trouble shooting programs?

After doing some searching, I suspect this is connected to the windows mail program. I did not delete it, it’s still there. It seems all is well with the world (for a while-I hope).

      Thanks for your suggestions.

Now I really don’t understand this. This afternoon after turning the computer on and checking mail decided to turn it back off and do something else. Lo and behold, the control options in the power button were back, I just had to go to properties and priortize them. Hmmm, must be Win 7 had a hangover (or glitch) and fixed itself.

Thank you all for your comments, they all appreciated.

    • in reply to: W7 trying to print on an XP-shared printer. #1229895

Earlier this year I purchased a new Computer with Win 7 and tried to connect it to an old HP 3 in 1. I checked and found there were no drivers for the printer compatible with Win 7.

You might try this as a work around after the printer is found; 1) On the laptop run windows in compatibility mode; right click on the printer; trouble shoot; look on line for drivers in the trouble shoot mode; download the driver for your model (or closest to it). I did this and while one spoke “French” and the other “English” eventually they would communicate sufficiently so I could print and scan what I needed. Typically, I had to restart the printer and run set up a couple of times to get by the errors the printer showed….but, it would work.

(FYI not completely certain of the exact sequence above, I am doing it from memory…you might have to play around in Win 7 a little, but, it’s there.)

After experiencing enough hassle, I spent $100 and replaced the printer. I guess it would depend upon how often you want to use the laptop with your set up (and how much grief you want to experience to make it work).

      Good Luck

Pete: Thanks for those thoughts, just out of curiosity I looked under the users to see if there might be something accessing and found the following user: virtualapp/didlogical. This has a different user name “02koonelytypz. Does this contribute anything of value? I don’t recognize an assciation with any program I am running. What might happen if I delete it?

I don’t believe remote desktop is running unless it is the above. I am the only admin on the computer.

Ted: Probably going to a restore point would fix, but I’m trying to understand what happened for future reference.

Joe: To my knowledge nothing in the Bios was changed….is there something there that could be looked at? The power management was changed from Log Off to
Shut Down, as a matter of fact I tried most all of the options there and nothing changed in the orb.

Mark: That’s the issue, when you click the orb the only option is “Log Off” everything to the right of > is greyed out.

    • in reply to: Wrong Icon for MS Word #1228966

I had a similar problem with my “deceased” XP. I lost all of the icons for the entire office suite including Access.
After doing much the same as cited above, I uninstalled the entire office system and reinstalled Office and Access and back they came. Just make sure you have backed up everything first!

    • in reply to: Non-default account in Outlook Express #1211919

If I understand OE correctly, it is set up to automatically reply from the account to which the mail was directed. If this doesn’t happen it suggests there may be a configuration problem. Is there someone close by (friend, relative, or neighbor) who could look at this for you? They might see something that I am missing.

If your computer is current on up dates, then the problem might be in the registry (which is a whole different issue). Have you recently run a “safe start” or “chkdsk” to see if this changes things?

Sorrry I am not of more help and good luck.

    • in reply to: Non-default account in Outlook Express #1211879

I use two OE accounts as well and sometimes, if I’m not careful I will send out something from the wrong address. Whether you are composing new, or a reply to a message the top line of your mail is the “from”. With two accounts there should be a down arrow at the far right of the from line; click it and you should have your choice of which account you wish to use. High light it and hit enter…You should be good to go.

Peter, thanks for the lead. Now I need help in deciding which program will do the job? Has anybody had any experience with one of these three? Mail Navigator—PC Tools Recover Files—Disk Doctor Email Recovery.

I hate to spend the money and then find out they won’t do what I had hoped for.

And thank you, Joe, as well. Something to consider after this issue is resolved.

    • in reply to: Upgrading to Office 2007 (2007) #1211746

When I purchased a new computer, I decided to try Office 2007 and was frustrated by the changes. After trying several different Windows training programs, I found the “Professor Teaches Office 2007” and tried it. Wonderful, while I don’t use the program for business, like some of you may; I now find I like it much better than Office 2003. More efficient and intuitive. Good Luck.

Not to sound too negative, however, I had similar problems with a HP I purchased on line (running Vista) this past summer. Long story short…they replaced it. I had the same problems with the new one, so that was returned as well. I paid two different experts to try to help me figure this out and they couldn’t! Ultimately, the HP was replaced with a new computer from a different mfgr. Needless to say I am not a HP supporter.
