A big thank you to Gfamily The formula =LEFT(A1,LEN(A1)-4) works perfectly as all of our user IDs have the four digits at the end.

We, too, had thought of =Right(a1,4) and similar things, but they, of course gave us just the numbers.

Thank you all for your responses. I’ve used this lounge for several years now, and have never failed to get help when needed. You are all much appreciated!

    • in reply to: vCards and Notes Field (OL2003, sp2 (3?)) #1117442

Thanks for the information, Joe, but I couldn’t make it work. The instructions say:
You can distribute a vCard file as you distribute any other computer file. To do this:
      1. Open a new message and address it to the recipient.
      2. On the Insert menu, click File.
      3. Click to select a vCard (.vcf) file, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you want to include Notes with your vCard, you must insert the .vcf file. If the .vcf is attached to your signature, the Notes field (and other fields) are removed prior from the vCard.
The problem is, when I go to the Insert, File dialog box, there is no .vcf option in the files of type area. I did try Insert, Item and was able to insert a contact that way. The notes came with it here in the office, but I’ll need to send it to someone else that way and see if they go with it then.
      Thanks again for the suggestion.

I had read something about that, too, which is why I can’t understand why one of us got the notes field and the other didn’t. Oh, well. “By design…” or broken. Apparently, we cannot expect it to work. Thank you, Hans.

Thank you, Hans. That at least gives us some places to check. We all really appreciate your contributions.

    • in reply to: Outlook opens on taskbar with no window (2003/sp1) #1003716

I’ve forwarded it to our Help Desk person, and am waiting for her response. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll let you know if it works.

    • Thank you, thank you, both of you. That did it. I do love this lounge.

    • Hans,

Thanks for the quick response. I’m apparently doing something wrong. My data starts in A4 with BWC00001, so in the new column B I entered =”BWC0″ & RIGHT(A4,6) – I tried both with and without spaces between the ” and & and the & and RIGHT. The result I get is BWC0C00001. In other words, I have a 0 C instead of just an additional 0. What am I doing wrong?

    • in reply to: Adding company holidays (OL2003, Windows XP) #982275

Thank you, Jerry. That’s exactly what we’re testing right now. I appreciate the suggestion.

    • in reply to: Adding company holidays (OL2003, Windows XP) #982260

      Jefferson,

Please don’t spend anymore time working on it. We’ve located another method using a customized Outlook.hol file, and will give that to our 2003 users. Possibly also to our OL2000 users, but not unless I’m confident that the .hol file hasn’t changed between releases. I may use the Transmit Holidays download for them. It really worked well – on 2000, apparently.

Thank you for taking time to work on this with me. I do appreciate it.

Are you thinking of security restrictions within Outlook itself? Could you suggest something we might look at? I don’t understand why, in some instances it sends the “list” of dates with % symbols separating fields, and in others presents the correct form with the non-functioning button to add the holidays. I do appreciate the fact that you thought of that – without having seen the program.

Additional note: I’ve learned that the program works fine for our users who are still on Windows 2000, and Outlook 2000. If the program runs a macro, could OL 2003 be stopping the program from running on other users machines, even though it ran fine on mine? If that’s the case, is there anyway to make the macro “safe” within our firm?

      Thank you.

    • Thanks for the quick response. Not what the user wanted, but I pointed her to the reminder sound option. Too bad it doesn’t have the 10-second Australian option available. I suspect that wouldn’t only make dogs take notice . . .! Thanks again.

    • in reply to: Mail Merge (Word/Outlook 2003) #961152

Edited by HansV to provide link. Simplest method: select [Post: 499,066] in the header of the post with the mouse, use Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard, then use Ctrl+V to paste it into yopur reply. It will automatically be converted to post 499,066.

I don’t know if it will help or not, but perhaps what we figured out in post 499,066 might be useful. I’m sorry – I don’t know how to create a link to it. 🙁

    • We figured out how to correct it – at least, we think we did. In case anyone else runs into the issue, here’s the process we used on our system:

In Outlook 2003 go to Tools –> E-mail Accounts –> View or change existing e-mail accounts –> Next
Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Change –> More Settings –> Advanced tab and Remove offending mailbox (e.g. XXXX Administrator) –> OK –> Next –> Finish

Go to Word, start the Mail Merge process, choose Outlook address book as source and be sure person’s own Contacts list appears. We created a test merge of labels and saved the document, just to be certain.

Go back to Outlook, repeat above instructions, but this time Add back in offending mailbox.

Test in Word again to be certain it’s still OK.

Several of us here tried it, and it stuck for us, too. Don’t know what’s different, but thank you all for your help. This is why I tell everyone about Woody’s Lounge. You’re all great!

I believe that the user in question had selected the Folder List, exited, and then opened Outlook again, and that it did not stick, but we’ll double check on that. Thank you for your help.
