It appears that Skype (free/paid; Web-based communications) & GWX Control Panel (free; blocks the Win10 upgrade on Win7 and Win8 systems) share the same link. So I can go to Skype but not to the GWX Control Panel… a new link would be nice… 🙂

This thread was a wonderful help, as I was going nutz trying to figure out what messed up my Office 2010 Outlook… uninstalling this “patch” fixed everything…

Keep up the wonderfully helpful posts!

      😎

    • in reply to: Scammers taking advantage of GWX? #1532634

As a “senior citizen”, we were taught to listen to authority figures at least in areas we were not knowledgeable in… doctors, lawyers, teachers, and the police were all to be respected and listened to… I think many of us would also think of Microsoft in those terms… older folks need to be educated about those that are “real” and those that are just looking to steal from us.

BTW, I have been using technology (computers, game systems) since the mid-70’s… I don’t trust any phone call or email that purports to be from an authority unless I called them first and expect a call…

I did answer once call that was supposed to be from Microsoft, but from the accent and poor English, I assumed he was not employed there or anyplace else legitimate… I hung up.

Teach folks as much as you can about scammers and crooks!

Is there any way to determine if the “upgrade” to Win10 will work on an installed Win7 Pro system? I have been using Pro for a while now and like it well enough that I don’t want to have Win10 mess up my system. I have a history of not going along with MSFT when I don’t think they are going in a good direction! I did not install Win9x on any of my systems but chose to go from Win3.1 directly to WinNT 3.51 and have been using a full 32 bit system ever since. (Until I was able to go to 64 bit.) Anyone else running a Pro version of Win7?

I started using “home computers” back in 1979 with my Atari 800… at that time there were multiple platforms that did not talk to each other at all… It took several years for all the different providers to die out and leave the two survivors to battle each other… I have seen that same battle in many technology arenas over the year and see the latest battle as a part of the process that has been going on for many years… It’s just going to come down to who can provide the best match with what companies and consumers need the most at this time.

Only in Seattle… it’s just the way things go here! 🙂

It depends on how old those posts are, but if scrolling down and then clicking “older post” on the old format, or just cicking on dates in the new format doesn’t do it, you may have to search if you know the “title” of the posts. FB is not known for getting to archived information easily, it’s more of a here and now site… Good luck!

    • in reply to: When will Google+ be available for all? #1292751

I have a few invitations I can share with you all. Send an email to OPTVTNGKJAHD@spammotel.com (it’s a temporary address that I can delete when I run out of invitations) and I will send an invite to you.

I also have invitations I can offer folks here on The Lounge. Just send me an email at justgeo1@gmail.com and put Google+ in the subject!

    • in reply to: What’s wrong with e-mail instead of Groups or Circles? #1292750

The big advantage to most social networks over email… less spam! Most networks I belong to have very strong safeguards against spammers. I’m also a moderator on a social network specifically oriented to diabetes, and we have a very strick policy about advertising. We just don’t allow it. The site also allows folks to select what kind of information each person focuses on…

    • in reply to: Expletive deletion: accidentally deleted Word #1292746

Pounding my head against the wall, weeping and wailing, hurling various curses and and filth and florin filth. I accidentally deleted Microsoft Word while installing a printer:o:mad:. That means a trip to Office Depot to spend money I don’t want to spend. Anybody know a place in Seattle that sells cheap Word?

Are you saying you don’t have an install disk for that program? I’ve always gotten MS Office on disk and if something goes wrong, I just reinstall from the original disk. 😀

    • in reply to: Can Google+ seriously challenge Facebook? #1289263

As a new user of Google+, I can say it’s not as ugly or strange to deal with as some other social network sites, but it could be improved in many ways. It’s interesting in the way it “suggests” connections but it’s a bit hard to figure out who you’re connecting with because you can’t see a profile until you’ve connected… at least I haven’t found a way. It’s very graphically oriented so it’s full of fancy images and “art”… maybe too artsy… I’ll keep using it for now, but if it doesn’t get better, it won’t last.

    • in reply to: Are password managers the answer? #1280283

      David,

      Disclosure: I’m a rabid RoboForm user…

In fact just today I upgraded my 2 licenses to version 7 and bought 2 more. They gave me a price of 15.64 ea. I consider this a bargain for the functionality RF provides. I use sync toy to keep the machines in sync {just remember not to sync the License.rfo file}. Every so often I also print out all my passcards and chuck them in the safe {just in case}. However, the chance that all 4 machines will bite the dust along with all the image backups at the same time is quite rare.

I have to agree, RoboForm is a great program and I’ve been using it for many years. I would be lost without it, and I use it’s ability to create passwords if I need a password for a new site I’m visiting…

    • in reply to: Firefox 4 and Roboform 6.10.2 fix #1276444

One of the readers commented on RoboForm not being compatible with FF4 and wanting them to upgrade to RF7. Fred didn’t suggest the option to actually upgrade to RF7 but I’ve found it to be an excellent upgrade with plenty of features that make it worth while. I have been a subscriber to RF since version 0.8… I don’t know how I would survive without it!

    • in reply to: 100% processor use with IE 7 and 8 #1268084

You also didn’t mention what OS you’re using. I feel it’s either one of your add-ons or perhaps malware…

    • in reply to: How good is the Norton firewall? #1233187

My firewall passed that test with flying colors, so I would suggest you dump Norton and get a better system. I’m using Vipre from SunBelt Software and someone will have to come up with a really fantastic produce for me to change.
