    • Sorry I took so long to post how that printer install went. Well, you all are fantastic! I simply downloaded two things under drivers at the Epson support site for the printer: “Printer Driver” and “Scanner Driver and Epson Scan Utility”.

      “j”

Hello… Thanks for posting back with your results …glad to have been some help ….Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Black screen says it’s in Power Save Mode #1414591

      Result successful.

A new battery made no difference, so I took it to a repair shop. Turned out to be the graphics card

      George ,

Hello… Glad that it worked out, and i could provide some help … Regards Fred

Help me understand why this sounds like a graphics problem to you. What I don’t see is how this can be a graphics problem if Save As works under some conditions but not others as well as some of the other symptoms I described.

      Fred,

Hello… I have had ( Win 7 64 Home and Pro) the “spinning circle” and random screen freeze’s , not responding, etc. Turned out that my NVIDIA settings were at fault …So i asked if you had “Nvidia” or something similar and or if you had “Updated” recently. Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Black screen says it’s in Power Save Mode #1414321

      Thanks Fred,

No idea whether there’s a graphics card. Is Power Supply something in the box, or are you referring to the power socket on the wall? I

I could buy a volt meter somewhere, but would I know what it was telling me?

      Hi George,

Some PC’s have a separate Graphics Card plugged into a PCI slot on the mother board…others have the graphics function built into it .The Power Supply is part of your PC, it is a modular device that can be switched out . A DVM (digital volt meter ) could tell you if all the PC’s voltages were OK , but you would need to know the mother board layout.( Google PC mfgr ) Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Desktop problems #1414298

      Any ideas?

      Fred,
Hello… Sounds like some sort of “Graphics problem ” What are you running ? ..Also have you installed any updates ? ( ex: NVIDIA or other type) Regards Fred

PS: Check your power supply voltages with this free software hwmonitor v1.23

    • in reply to: AMD processor equal to Intel #1414289

I just bought a new HP laptop with an AMD A8 5550M processor with 2.1 ghz. I’ve pretty much always been an Intel user the past decade and was wondering what in Intels line is this new Amd equal to? Would it be like a dual core or I3 or I5?

      mtbarbee,

Hello… My 2 ¢ …. I have two windows 7 64 Pro PC’s …one with a Quad core AMD FX-4100…and the other with an Intel 2 core i7 3517U .. Couldn’t tell you that there was any perceivable difference between either…Then again I’m not secretly working for NASA calculating space shuttle payloads, or playing goofy “kill the space aliens” Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Black screen says it’s in Power Save Mode #1414288

There is noise from the computer, similar to my machine, but quieter.

There are plenty of lights, the green one on the actual computer, orange on the monitor
      But thanks for your help.

      Hi George,

Sounds like something other than “Power Saver Mode” is the problem …More likely a bad Power Supply or Graphics card ( if there is one) If you have a spare Power Supply try to swap it out . Or another thing would be to use a DVM (digital volt meter ) to check the PC’s voltages ,as a first step . A bad HD would at least try to boot …you would at least see the BIOS screen…. Regards Fred

    • in reply to: icons in start>programs no longer open programs #1413766

some icons in start>programs no longer open programs, instead they open a choice of shortcuts to optopns like help, uninstall, update, or/and the program itself

      qaz,

Hello… are you sure that you have “permission ” ( logged on as Admin) to run programs ? Regards Fred

PS: Also have you moved any of your “programs” ie: placed on a different HD or folder

    • in reply to: How do I use Backup? #1413741

      1. In what kind of problem scenarios would I use backup (full not image).
      2. How do I clear the backup disk before using a new program.
      3. Did I buy a story or should a backup disk drive be helpful for future trips to the repair shop.

      jnvan,

Hello…. I think that there was some confusion of terms ..”I was worried about losing data and programs I asked if he needed my backup disk”

      1. If your “Backup Disk” had all your Data and Info , programs , or Images…. Either he misunderstood you or he was giving you a “con job”

      2. What do you mean by Backup ..not full image ? …. Please explain .

      3. A backup disk or Hard Drive either internal or external (if done correctly ) will have everything that is on your OS ( full Image) …So in the event of your OS having problems whether caused by a failure or something that you do ….You can get everything back …”no problemo”

      4. There are free 3rd party programs that will do what you want … Post back if you have more questions:cheers:Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Two video cards work until reboot, no onboad video #1413603

So far it’s run continuously for many days now and been through at least half a dozen reboots, all stable.

      F.U.N.,

Hello… Still think that you should check the PS voltage ( voltages) when the PC fails to boot (In black screen mode) …. Regards Fred

PS: One other thought…. When you change cards and install drivers, on what system do you do it for XP or 7? …Also what OS is the default?:cheers:Regards Fred

    • in reply to: restoring backup #1413554

I have several related questions regarding restoring a full backup of C: drive.
My old computer was an eMachines running Win7 Home Premium, with two 1TB hard drives. The Seagate drive contained the C: partition and I now think that drive has gone bad.

      meamjw,

Hello…. If this were my PC i would do the following ..I would be cautious so this will involve more steps

      1. Your going to need a “Macrium Reflect” recovery disk …for whatever version you have. Macrium allows you to move the “install key” from one PC to another… so you could use the Key to install Macrium on the HP if you didn’t make a recovery disk.

      2. Move the Image (copy) to a flash drive and to the HP …just to be safe.

      3. Once you do this you can partition the working drive however you want , Then using the “Macrium Recovery” disk you restore the Image to it.

If you have any questions …post back and we will try to guide you if your not sure with about any of this…. Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Two video cards work until reboot, no onboad video #1413553

With the HD4550 in, no problems, survives all boots to either OS for many test days. All cards derive all their power from the PCI-e slot only. I don’t have a clue.

      Hi F.U.N.,

I’ll take a “Wag” at this …. Could be that your PS is marginal ,and the “other” cards draw more current ..It would be best to monitorcheck the PS with a DVM (when you can’t boot) … see if everybody’s up … Regards Fred

    • I am the sole user of a Windows 7 computer and the only Administrator. Using the “Run as Administrator” command makes no difference.

      Ronnie,

Hello… You can click on the FolderFile and using a free program add “Take ownership ” to your right click context menu Winbubble Just download and install..Then take ownership of that folderfile …good to go….Also there are lots of useful “tweaks” Regards Fred

    • With Vista, Win7, and now Win8, on two different laptops, I’ve had the baffling issue of why Windows Image Backup would not see all of its backups.

      ParrotSlave,

Hello…After having investigated “Windows Backup” and compared it to the 3rd party Imaging software ( even the Free ones ) I wouldn’t waste any time with it …It is a horrible program , both clumsy and clunky with even worse features… “Imaging” is the most important thing that a PC userowner should be involved with. I would recommend Macrium Reflect Pro …you can even try the Free one here It’s well worth the price and has a “boatload” of Tools and features … Have a read through the comparison chart. Regards Fred

PS: Have done hundreds of Backups and scores of Recoveries on XP, Vista, and 7… mix of both 32 and 64 bit versions

    • Are there any tricks for getting Win 7 to recognize the clone drive and give it a letter designation so I can access all of the old files as necessary?

      Modon,
Hello…. If you go to Computer Management>Disk Management… you should see the drive show up …If you right click on it you should be able to give it (assign) a drive letter from the drop down… Regards Fred
