    • in reply to: Desktop icons not responding #1416034

On a “normal” startup my desktop icons (of which there are many) no longer respond to double-click and additionally the computer seems to be completely dead. If anyone has any ideas how to solve this rather nasty situation, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.

      “Exiled”

Hello… What happens if you “Right Click” on the Icons and choose “Properties” ? Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Macrium Reflect free says disk in use #1415844

I want to clone C: drive to D: drive. Both are installed and a physically identical. No matter what choices I make, Macrium Reflect says D: drive in use and will not proceed further. Any suggestions? (I deleted all files on D: drive by dragging to trash. Did not try complete wipe.)

      heritage,

Hello… If by “identical” you mean that they are exact copies… Then there would be two C: drives (clones) If this is the case you would need to format the D: NTFS primary active… do not assign a letter, then clone your C: as source, and D: as the target. I have used Macrium Reflect to do this many times …. Regards Fred

PS: you could also do the “clone” thing from the Macrium recovery disk ( @ boot time)… so neither disk would be in use.

    • in reply to: How bad are hard drive bad sectors? #1415438

      I have a Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 hard drive 2 Tb Windows 7
2 weeks ago, while running an Acronis backup, it gave me a bad sector message, would not complete backup.
      Ran chkdsk

      sheltieMom,

Hello…. I would proceed as follows

      1. I would run the “Check Disk” ( from elevated Command Prompt) using the “R” switch…See screen shot

      2. I would also download and install hdsentinel It’s a trial but will find “Whats Sup” with your HD …and well worth the price if you want to purchase.. ( go with the “PRO” Version).. It keeps a real time check on your HD’s health… Regards Fred

    • in reply to: How do I restore Win 7 system image to D: drive #1415437

I have identical C: and D: drives. Using Backup and Restore in Win 7 Ultimate, I made a system image of C: on an external hard drive. I would like to “restore” this to D: drive. Backup and Restore apparently will restore only to C: drive. Anyone know how to restore to D: drive.

I think it is clear that I simply want to image C: drive to D: drive in case I have future disasters (everything seems fine now).

      heritage,

Hello…. I a bit confused about your statements …Think we have some confusion of terms …

      1. By a “System Image” do you mean the entire HD , OS and all else?

      2. If your “D” HD is labled as stated …a third party tool can restore the “Image” to it .. It would first erase it and restore the C: image and change the D: HD to C:

      3. This would be done at boot time with a recovery disk made by Acronis… You then would have a choice as to where to place the “Image” , made by Acronis

      4. You might try to use the “Windows Image” if you format the “D” and set it as active … Then remove the C: drive and with a Windows Recovery disk restore the Windows Image to the formatted HD…

      5. Personally i would opt for the Acronis route …Windows Imaging “ain’t worth the time”… Its too clumsy and clunky of a program …even as compared to the Free Imaging programs. Regards Fred

      6. Although i (also) do not use, or like Acronis 2012 …it will do what you ask. So why not ?

    • in reply to: Files search in Windows 8 (and Win7) #1415286

But is such advanced search around if still desired?

      John,

Hello… There is a free program that i use that finds anything on your PC …ultrafilesearch check it out and configure it however you like. Regards Fred

    • in reply to: backup help needed #1415285

I couldn’t find it in the free version, so I assume it’s one of the functions free doesn’t have compared with Pro.

      access,

Hello.. .did some checking  Regards Fred

    • It just started. The sound is mono in one speaker when it works. It doesn’t make any difference what the source is or the player. It happens on both the front and rear ports and 3 of the 5 that are available. The motherboard is a Biostar A780L. The sound drivers are RealTek.

      “CM”

Hello.. If you open the Realtek HD audio manager …is the balance set correctly? Regards Fred

    • in reply to: backup help needed #1415238

I was going to suggest MRF but it doesn’t overwrite old ones. You will have to manually delete them, though that can be done in Windows Explorer.

      access,

Hello… Macrium Reflect Pro can …not sure about the “Free” version:cheers: Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Recycle Bin icon keeps changing #1414814

Fred, looking at your list (which is just a list of search results for i386), it appears that there is more than one i386 folder, in several places. I don’t believe that these are the equivalent to the i386 folder in XP (but I’m not sure of this, so consider this statement a question).

      LesF,

Hello…You are correct …it’s not like XP (one folder) they are split into two main folders…. the one shown ( about 1.5GB) , and winsxs .. Almost 9 GB on my Vista:cheers: Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Recycle Bin icon keeps changing #1414755

where I would expect the replacement files to reside in case sfc finds a problem with a system file. So, absent this folder where would sfc find the files to replace any damaged system files that it finds?

      LesF,

Hello… I “cranked up” my Vista OS and here is a list :cheers:Regards Fred

PS: Can’t say about “Updates” as i never apply any patches or updates on a working OS … unless i need to

    • memory corsair DDR3-1600 16G quad kit

      zy,

Hello… Try running just “two sticks” and see what “haps”. Also does the installed memory show up in BIOS? Regards Fred

PS: If your only running with 2 …then try just one stick… Also make sure that there installed in the correct positions

    • in reply to: Recycle Bin icon keeps changing #1414722

      Thanks for your replies.

Clive, if I recall correctly, running sfc /scannow requires inserting an original Windows installation disk. My son’s computer (an HP) of course didn’t come with a Microsoft original disk (although it has a recovery partition). Therefore, I don’t think I can run scf on his computer (I may be wrong).

Fred, thanks for the suggestion. I’ll try that.

      LesF,

Hello… No…. “sfc /scannow” does not require a disk ( sometimes for XP) :cheers:Regards Fred

    • Is there a way to move a (windows 8) system image From a LEGACY BIOS system to UEFI-based System, or is a clean install the only way to achieve this?

      petemst,

Hello… Boy this is going to be complicated to try to explain …”Cause” there are a few variables… I have done this …but the other way around, Moving a GPT UEFI image to a MBR setup. I’ll throw a few questions first …

      1. Depending on the Motherboard … some will have options for either UEFI or MBR …Are you building a new PC?

      2. Why do you want a UEFI GPT system ? … I have a UEFI MOBO that can handle MBR OS’s …I hate GPT ! ( hold on …putting my “Woopin Helmet” on…Cause i know that I’m gonna take a “Woopin” for saying this ) Why on earth would anyone want or need more than 4 primary partitions on a HD? or are you secretly working for the “Space Administration” ?

      3. UEFIGPT sets up two partitions from the “Geko” …one contains the boot info …who knows what the other is…So here’s the problem …

      4. If you try to install a MBR Image to a GPT UEFI HD, there will be no boot info …so it wont boot ..There are “workarounds”

      5. Macrium Reflect Pro can Install the Image and fix the boot problems …. ( haven’t tried this ..MBR to GPT ) Did this the other way around and needed Acronis True Image, as well to set the GPT Image to Active Primary ..so Macrium could use it… ( Macrium didn’t have the option from the dropdown)

      I know….. I’ve made more questions than i answered … I’ll try to help… Regards Fred

    • in reply to: RAID hard drives #1414711

I’ve found that disc imaging, once I got it setup properly, is a good substitute for RAID1. Also, with imaging to an external drive you can store that drive in a fireproof safe or an offsite location.

      cloudsandskye,

Hello…couldn’t agree more… For a normal PC user “Imaging” is the way to go…..Regards Fred

    • in reply to: Recycle Bin icon keeps changing #1414636

My son’s computer is running Vista.

I have gone to desktop/personalize/change desktop icons and tried to change the full icon back to what it should be, or to return the icon to its default, but it either doesn’t change, or it changes for only a short time and then reverts back to showing and empty recycle bin.

      LesF,

Hello… From time to time i have had this happen on Vista as well .. .You need to make sure that you do the procedure that you described for both “Icons” Make sure that you click on Change Icon>Then select it from the Images> Then Click > “Apply” each time. Regards Fred
