      Andrew,
I’ve just save my main file to RTF and back to DOC. All my graphics are linked so they were untouched. In fact the file size went down from 1200K to 900K.
It looks like a lot of hidden garbage may have been cleaned out.
      Thank you for your advice.

    • in reply to: Can NOT delete particular style (Word 2003) #1024083

Thanks Andrew. I tried RTF with the sample and it removed the offending style.
      Both styles were paragraph.

Before I try this with my 90 page lesson, are there any downsides to saving as RTF?
      Thanks again,
      Judith

    • in reply to: Can NOT delete particular style (Word 2003) #1024080

      Hello,
I have two styles in my document named “Note Heading” and “Note Heading,Note” – This is supposed to be impossible.
I have tried to delete “Note Heading” but it persists. The delete confirmation dialogue box pops up, I click OK, but the style is still there.
I have also tried to delete it through the Organizer with no success.

      Any ideas

I’ve tried deleting “Note Heading,Note” suspesting a linkage but no luck.
      I’ve attached a sample document,

      Thanks in advance
      Judith

    • in reply to: Style headers with numbering (Word 2003) #1023477

I have also worked with documents where each chapter is a separate file.

What I did was set up the heading numbering scheme in the template and create each chapter file. (If the chapters already exist, update the styles from the attached template.)

Then made sure that the “Automatically Update Styles from Template” in the “Templates and Add-ins” pop-up window was OFF.
Go to the Heading 1 in each chapter file and reset its numbering to start at 1, 2, or 3..
This is, in effect, creates direct formatting which will be lost if the style is reapplied from the template.

I used Folio-by-chapter numbering and made a combined TOC and combined Index by creating a shell document and using RD fields.

      Hope this helps,
      Judith

    • in reply to: Columns? (Word 2003) #1011056

      Hi,
My first thought would be to use a two column table with no borders.
This could give you lots of options of such as aligning matching paragraphs in the two columns.

    • in reply to: Customizing Footnotes/Endnotes (Word XP/2003) #1010948

      Jim,
You will probably go with Hans’s suggestion and put the footnotes at the end of the last section before the index.

However, don’t discard the idea of having the index in a separate document. It’s very simple:
1.Create a “back matter” document for the bibliography and index.
      2. Insert the main document’s name in an RD field in the “back matter” document and then insert the index field.
      3. When you refresh the “back matter” document, voila, it contains the index for the main document!

This is also a great way of creating a combined index when your chapters are all separate files.

      Hi,
      This sounds most peculiar.
You could ask her to do a screen dump of the first page and paste it into an email to you.
That will confirm that she is using word, will show if track changes are on and possibly give you some clues.
      Good luck.

      Thanks Hans.
That seems to do the trick and appears to have no negatives because I never apply direct formatting to anything.

Thanks for the quick reply. clapping

    • in reply to: Track *MY* changes (Word 2000`) #1006425

How about writing an AutoOpen macro to change the User name – for example increment it or add the date?
Perhaps you could use a special character eg # to identify introduce the date, then the macro could delete back to the # before adding the new date.

    • in reply to: index for multiple documents (Word 2000 SP3) #1005552

      Kim,
thanks for the macro. What a lot of work you did for a stranger.
I changed the file names and paths as you suggested, put my code names for the documents in the Properties title and ran the macro.
      It worked really well.

The index has come out as a single column not two columns. Because of the file names in the page numbers, I’m going to leave it as single column and extend the macro to replace the style Index 1 with a new style Index Master which will have the tab at 15cm and will remove the direct formatted tab at 7cm and the directly applied US English.
And I’ll also remove all the remnant section breaks.

I’ll repost the macro later in case anyone else is interested.
I have only one unsolved problem: multi-level index entries. They are split up by the sort. If I can find a way to identify them in VBA, I might convert them to single level entries.

here is a sample of the combined index. It’s certainly what we need. Thanks again.
      Backbone cable …………….. L3M1L3-36
      Bit ……………………………….. L3M1L1-24, 39
      BNC connector ……………….. L3M1L3-66
      Bridge ………………………………. L3M1L3-45
      Browsers …………………………… L3M1L2-22
      Bus …………………………………… L3M1L1-33

    • in reply to: index for multiple documents (Word 2000 SP3) #1005180

      Kim,
That’s exactly right. You’ve understood exactly. I’ve had programming experience in other languages but not a lot in VBA.

I’ve been trying to make my index by using Folio-by-Chapter numbering eg
      Candied Yams…….Thanksgiving Dinner Made Easy-4
      Dill Pickles……..Summer Delights-17
Garlic Mashed Potatoes…….Thanksgiving Dinner Made Easy-12

I have a naming convention that I use for the lessons. If I can institute this as the “Chapter” number, I might be able to create an index like
      Candied Yams…………TDME-4
      Dill Pickles………………..SD-17
      Garlic Mashed Potatoes……………TDME-12

using RD fields it currently comes out as:
      Candied Yams…………………………..4
      Dill Pickles………………………………..17
      Garlic Mashed Potatoes…………..12

      Thanks again,

    • in reply to: index for multiple documents (Word 2000 SP3) #1005147

      Kim,
      Thanks for your reply.
I have a hundred lessons. What I really want is a simple way to combine the indexes of these 100 lessons to answer such questions as “Which lesson covers multi-meters?”
If I can have the page number as well as the document name, so much the better, but the document name will be enough.
      Regards,

    • in reply to: Create Table Tents (2000) #1004409

I might be trying to solve the wrong problem here; I’m not familiar with the expression “Table Tent”. If you mean a folded piece of paper that will sit up on a desk like a notice, you could try this:
Change the page set-up to landscape.
Make a 2 column, 1 row table and type in your text.
Select the left hand cell and use Format->Text direction to rotate the text clockwise.
Select the right hand cell and use Format->Text direction to rotate the text anti-clockwise
Fold the page in half and the two cells should have the writing the right way up.

If this is not what you have in mind, please provide more details.

    • Thanks, Cris, for taking the trouble to investigate.
My original template has been deleted, so Word won’t let me just change the “update styles from template” flag but insists on me attaching a new template at the same time.

    • in reply to: Index troubles (Word 2000) #1002781

      That’s the real question
How do I make the “from template” option generate headings and then centre them?

I want to define in the template what the index should look like.
