Hi Bryan, mostly I am flying in the dark with netmeeting. I used to have a much older version on my home machine over 3 years ago and after fumbling my way around using it I actually found it pretty amazing considering it is a free program. Once I got past the incredible amount of users in the directory and created a private “room” to communicate with a couple of specific people only, it was very cool. Could use the whiteboard, microphone and text without problems (slow audio but still amazing at the time). Since then I have changed machines to a notebook, and not needed to use it until lnow. However I cannot get it to “talk” on this machine, the program is loaded, comes up when I launch, a small screen appears (very different from early versions), I filled out everything needed, but it will not connect to the directory server. The only directory option for connection is to the Microsoft directory, that screen comes up, then after a while of trying it comes back saying “unable to connect to directory”, I have tried everything I know but nothing can get it working. It would be wonderful if you can give me an idea of what you think I am doing wrong (please). General comments I have heard back when I ask colleagues about netmeeting, all say to give up on it. I am happy to have found a supporter of this product, anything at all you can advise please do so. I would still like to have another shot at getting it going. Many thanks for your reply Bryan.

Okay Ken, will look for those options, this is sure taking a while to work out, I must be really dumb 🙂 It sounds like you use something like this, if so can you tell me what program and if you are happy with it? Would really appreciate the advice. thank you again.

Thank you, I will not go any further with the idea of netmeeting, sounds like its a dud. Bob many thanks for the feedback, I dont know anything about communication programs, so all this is new to me. I am finding this place so useful, thank you again for the help.

Cyberdance and Ken, terrific info on pc phones, I really never gave Messenger a thought, I am not a member but have the program because it downloaded with Explorer, if anyone has experience using it as a pc to pc or a pc to phone please write and advise if it is any good. What a good idea, would never have thought about a program I already have. In the meantime I will have a look at the links Ken inserted for me (thank you Ken). 🙂

CyberDancer thank you for those simple instructions on altering my start up page, easy to follow for a dummy like me. I have written them down for the next time my startup page magically becomes something else. Great! Jude

So this means Outlook Express cannot extract an embedded sound, only other email programs can do it?

Sorry, dont know why I thought it was 10 mgs, anyway I have downloaded both spyware and now adware, thank you for the link. I installed Zone Alarm 3 but it kept causing problems, which is why I have been offline for a few days. Every time I booted ZA told me I had error’s, it did log 2 sites with only 0’s as the IP, but I could not seem to delete them. Ended up uninstalling it, but will try again because I would like to feel protected. Thank you very much for the help, I will keep on trying to have the firewall up and running before installing adware. 🙂

Thank you – I downloaded Spybot because it was 2mb, when I looked at Ad-ware it was over 10mb. I have the program Spybot but have yet to run the install, do you think it might be too difficult for me to understand being new?

I am relatively new to all this, do you know of any free programs that can run a scan on my machine and tell me if there is anything that is not right? Like the spyware and trojan??’s I have been reading about. I had a look at the sites you posted, they are terrific, but I dont know what I am looking for, can you suggest anything please?
