Is the problem that you can print text, but not graphics in MS Word? I’m not using an up-to-date version of Word, but there used to be a draft mode in Word that would cause this.

On Word 97 all these options are not available. The one that is making the difference is: Use printer metrics to lay out document. Maybe they should call these options the Incompatibility Options.

When I look at these in Word 97, I am seeing different line spacing, including spacing before the first line, but I don’t know why.

I’m not a math writer, but have you looked at the possibility of Word 2010 to PDF to InDesign? Word 2010 can make PDFs; either your team or the authors could make a PDF of their work, and the typesetters could use all or part of that PDF to set the book. Is this a possibility?

I’m trying to create a 10" number for a banner. When I use Word 2007, as I enlarge the font, the number creeps down the page

Is there an unseen header taking up room at the top of your page?

If you have Microsoft Word 2010, you can use the screen capture tool in it.

    • in reply to: MS Office 2010. Recent documents do not show #1234377

Many security utilities or disk cleaning utilities, such as CCleaner, eliminate (or delete) the recently-used-file data. And if there is no data, the recently used file option in Word or Excel would be grayed out. Could this be a factor?

If you save, and then close a file, and immediately look at recently used files, is anything there? If not, I would suspect some type of security setting, either in Office or Windows, is causing this. Unfortunately my own setup is not so new and I can’t give any further suggestions.

If you set the paragraph line spacing to “exactly” say 12 points, instead of single spacing, does that work for you?
Are you seeing this problem in every line? Or just the lines wth equations and super or subscripts?

    • in reply to: Word 2010 facing pages in print preview #1224422

Andrew Lockton, my sympathies are with peterl in this thread. Your point that Word is not a page layout program is, of course, correct. But I suspect that, on a de facto basis, Word may be the most popular desktop publishing program in the world.

And seeing the two page spread is important, particularly for technical stuff that sort of gets scanned by users, so that the book (or booklet) maker can experience the user’s view of the book as early as possible in the process. At least that’s the way I feel about document making.

So, even though I never used this particular feature (I’m on a older version of Word), I also am disappointed that this is not available in Word 2010. I think peterl’s mini-rant is reasonable.

    • in reply to: Saving Screen shots using Faststone Capture #1208437

I’m really not understanding the problem. How can FastStone Capture save as Photosuite 2? What do you mean?

Are you saying that when you try to take a screenshot, that Photosuite 2 starts and not FastStone Capture?

Are you saying that when you try to open a file that was captured and saved by FastStone Capture that Photsuite2 is the program that opens the file? If this is the case, then you just need to re-associate a file type (say, .bmp) with FastStone Capture.

Althouth I am not clear on the problem, perhaps re-installing FastStone Capture may restore the previous situation. Or there may be file association options in FS Capture that will do the same thing without a re-install.

      Maybe this helps. …J. Till

Re Photofiltre 6.4 (free for personal use)
The news page of the site says:

The setup installer includes now the Ask Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Uncheck the option when running the installer if you don’t want to install it.
PhotoFiltre and the Ask Toolbar can be uninstalled separately.

So pay attention when you are installing. …J. Till

    • in reply to: Open Office free ware #1186992

Hans, OpenOffice is, indeed, a significant competitor to Microsoft Office. But I disagree with your statement that “it is maintained and expanded by volunteers.” This is the message put out by OpenOffice evangelists, but the truth is that the heavy lifting is done by an army of paid programmers at Sun (perhaps soon to be part of Oracle) and to a lesser degree Novell. Any discussion of open source software should mention who is paying the bills now, and who will be doing so in the future. That’s where many projects start to get interesting. And why I’m going to stay with Microsoft Office. …J. Till

On the general subject of booklets, Woody has discussed some alternate approaches, most notably using Adobe Reader.

    • in reply to: Booklet Printing #1177162

Sorry, I don’t have a recent version of Word. However, does the 40 sheets actually mean 40 pieces of paper? This, of course, would be 160 pages in a foldover booklet. If you could staple and fold 40 sheets of paper!
I’m looking for a response on this as it would be one of the main reasons for buying Word 2010. Good luck, J. Till
