Though you didn’t say so, I’m assuming by ‘on campus’ you mean it is a school operated computer? If it is, contact the campus tech support crew and I’m sure they can help you configure things correctly.

      Good luck!

Glad you partially solved your problem.

I would say the count is in the thousands now..of all the problems I have solved with a shut-down and reboot on a PC (Windows and others).

    • Or just go into regedit, search for kaspersky and delete everything by hand.

** standing back for all the outcry about registry tinkering **

Tinker away! By all means but…

Before you delete anything it’s usually safer to rename the key, value, etc. by just using the date you’re renaming it on in front of the old name. This retains the original name and data in place. If it turns out you need the data, etc. you can search on the date and then rename the key, value, etc. by removing the date and leaving the original name in the place it belongs. Even if you never delete it (leave it in its renamed state)…all modern Windows OSs can handle artifacts left in place with ease.

A tip of the hat to Jerry Honeycutt who recommended the idea to me years ago. (‘Windows Registry Guide,’ Microsoft Press)

      Thanks.

When I had this PC built (2007) it was an XP machine. When I bought 7 I thought some of my third-party software may be more compatible with the 32-bit?

Gathering the parts for a new rig and it will be 64-bit.

      Thanks for your help.

Didn’t mean to hijack a thread. Was I off topic?

    • Non-Microsoft but a couple of free tools – FoldersReport & WinDirStat.

      Joe

      Thanks.

FolderReport hasn’t been updated in a number of years and didn’t say it was designed for Windows 7.

WinDirStat is newer, update wise, and also says it is designed to run on Windows 7. And as always I scanned with MSE and VirusTotal and it passed both scans.

      Tom,

I’m not really sure how to go about restoring your original codecs & relationships, but a good start would seem to be to uninstall any installed codec packages using Windows or the REVO Uninstaller, reboot, then reinstall WMP and reboot again. Let us know if that works.

      Zig

I don’t see any listing in the Program Listings for Windows Media Player to uninstall it? There is one for Windows Media Center.

I know you used to be able to uninstall Windows Media Player and reinstall it in Windows XP.

    • in reply to: ‘save as’, library issue and ‘access denied’ #1322103

I believe when I download a file with IE9 a download bar pops up at the bottom of the screen. Instead of clicking on save, click the arrow next to ‘Save’ and select ‘Save As’ and a folder tree pops up.

    • in reply to: “Access denied” Why wasn’t this fixed in Win 7 ? #1322099

      I found a ‘workaround’ on Microsoft answers when I had a similar problem with File/Folder Ownership/Permissions. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/windows-7-ownership-of-foldersfiles-and-how-to/525fa4a2-63d1-4c23-8459-cc56c785fdea?tm=1330306676841

It really didn’t answer my question as to what the default setting should be for Windows 7 but temporarily solved my problem while I research it some more.

    • in reply to: A new security threat arrives: Evercookies #1268092

I appreciate your suggestion for KeePass as a password manager but no one, not even the developer, has any information that I can find about how to integrate with current passwords etc….and, in fact, not very good documentation at all.

In fact, having looked at several password managers over the past few years I have yet to find one with professional or even useful documentation. Have I missed something??

    • in reply to: MSE – alone or in combination #1263660

Been using MSE for almost 2 years – no infections that I know of and no bog down by Norton (previous advocate – began using Norton Utilities 1.0 in 1983). MSRT runs once a month with updates as Microsoft would know what is in the wild and how to spot it best.

Some anti-malware programs (not knocking them) mark non-malware items as malware?
