AskWoody LoungerI’m going to try irfanview one of these days. I am very happy with vueprint. I’ve used it for a long time. If you decide to give it a try, it will work fine but give you a splash screen until you buy it. It also uninstalls very well, just three small files in the windows dir. You will just have to re-associate your image files with irfanview I imagine.

AskWoody Loungerhttp://www.guardwall.com/en/index.asp%5B/url%5D Guard IE stops popups, clears cookies and history on exit, other stuff. Free to try. I bought it and like it a lot.
http://www.hamrick.com/upg.html%5B/url%5D VuePrint (vuepro) great for looking at pictures, making wallpaper, printing pics, crop and save, I use it all the time.

AskWoody LoungerI found it. I will post my findings just in case anyone else has this problem. I don’t know how it got changed but by searching the registries on 2 computers and comparing them I came up with this and it worked. In the registry (regedit) under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, MIME, DATABASE, CONTENT TYPE, IMAGE/JPEG. On the right side see the name EXTENSION and in the data column just take out the E making it “.JPG” rather than “.JPEG”.

AskWoody Loungerok. Thank you all for the information. I will now start researching firewall software. McAfee seemed to change my settings each time it upgraded and I didn’t care much for that and the last time I think it set itself to block everything on that one machine on the lan. I see zone alarm mentioned, is that good? I have 4 win98-2 and 2 xp computers on our home network with the linksys router and dsl modem. I do use McAfee for virus check.

AskWoody LoungerHow many files are on the cd? I found that at around 16000 files on a burned cdrom I can no longer read the picture files. They are listed in the directory but they won’t open. I save pictures on cd in directories of about 1000 to 2000 pictures each. But after the 16000th something file, They won’t open, can’t be copied, ect. They seem to be there in name only.

AskWoody LoungerI too used McAfee Firewall. A problem I noticed with it was when it would upgrade itself it would change it’s settings. Then one day my wife’s computer refused to connect to the internet. (DSL through a Linksys router). I tried everything I knew to get things working. The machine was on the lan but would not access the internet. I finally called tech support. To make a long story shorter I ended up uninstalling the firewall. Disabling it had no effect, I had to uninstall it. The computer then got on line with no more problems. The tech support guy told me I really didn’t need a software firewall with the router.

AskWoody LoungerI’ve been there and have all the boxes unchecked. I may have to check one of them just to make the popup go away. Thanks for the reply. What an irritating “feature”.

AskWoody LoungerRR,
This is what fixed things for me in Win98. Right click start, click explore, then click drive c. On the view menu click details, then click name. Then press and hold the control key down and close explorer with the X in the top right corner, not with the file menu. Release the control key. Restart the computer. That will change the sort order to the default in explorer and in applications that save. It worked great for me. Thanks to BC Reeves who gave me the tip.
