AskWoody LoungerOne of my laptops updated to the anniversary update. I’m hoping Microsoft forgets to update the other two. The update screwed up the start menu, turned off file sharing, lost the homegroup, and eliminated most of my personal settings. If I could turn off windows updates like I’ve done with all previous versions of windows, I certainly would do it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. 🙂

AskWoody LoungerI updated from 2013 to 2014 and I am having big troubles. The program refuses to remember my settings. It insists on backing up to a network drive which is not connected and insists on making a weekly backup at a time I am using the computer. Nothing I can do will change these settings. I can manually change the settings to make a back up, but the settings will not stick. The only way I have been able to control the automatic backup is to disable Acronis in Services. I must then enable it again to make a backup.
Support is non existent (literally) after the first 30 days. Reinstall failed to fix the problem.I would uninstall and return to my 2013 but no one can tell me if that will work seeing as I used that copy as a qualifier to update.

AskWoody LoungerI solved the problem by uninstalling AVG 9

AskWoody LoungerI set the drive up, reformatted to NTFS, and set for sharing. I can access the drive from all the other computers and haven’t had an issue with rebooting. I’m very pleased with it.
Thanks for all your answers. -

AskWoody LoungerThank you Al. I was hoping that would be the case.

AskWoody LoungerJuly 8, 2009 at 1:03 pm in reply to: How do I stop the “Set Up Windows Internet Explorer 8” pop-up??? #1168129I think this is standard until one makes the selections. If one cancels out the run once wizard has not been completely run, so it will start up again when IE is started.
I accidentally installed IE8 on one of my computers, and I now have to deal with this same pop up. It wants me to take advantage of all these really cool things which I don’t want. Clicking it just takes me to the Microsoft site where it explains all these wonderful things. There seems to be no way to stop this thing from popping up. I hate it. I have found no way to stop it.

AskWoody LoungerAnd the program still has the problem almost 2 months later? I drove myself nuts last night trying to install ver 1.5. I uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled, redownloaded, reinstalled, and finally gave up and went back to version 1.4. I can’t complain to loud because the program is free. But you would think they would have fixed this or at least put a reference to this problem on the web site.

WSjrclen
AskWoody LoungerYes it does. I did hear from Spybot tech support and they gave me a link to the fix. I didn’t realize 1.5 was a beta. It looked like the real deal on the web site. I’ll just wait a while and stick with 1.4 until 1.5 is ready for general use. Thanks Hans.

AskWoody LoungerNever mind. I located a copy of 1.4 on Tucows. I’m now back in business. Works fine as it always did. I emailed Spybot to make them aware of a problem with 1.5. Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerI think I got it. I was doing the sharing incorrectly. I had to choose a folder and then choose who to share it with. I chose “everyone,” set that to co-owner, and now those folders can be accessed from the XP computers. I haven’t managed to share an entire partition, but I’ll work on it.

AskWoody LoungerDid you solve this? I was coming to the forum with exactly the same problem and saw this thread. I bought my wife a new Vista home premium machine and added it to my home network with a wired router. I can access all three XP computers from the Vista computer. But I get the access denied when trying to access the Vista machine from the others. I turned on all sharing.I set sharing for both partitions, all folders I wish to share, and the printer. One more note to add to your problem is in network places, looked at from an XP machine, the Vista machine is listed under workgroup rather than the name of my network. On the Vista computer, the network box shows it connected to my home network name. I uninstalled Norton and turned off the windows firewall. There is no firewall running on any of the computers. All that is running on any of the computers is AVG Free anti virus. I can access the public folder on the Vista machine from the other computers. But I cannot print or access any other folders from the XP computers. I’ll go search existing threads, but I sure would appreciate any help you guys could give me. Again.
Addition: I can now print to the printer on the Vista computer from the XP computers. So the issue now is accessing the folders on the Vista computer from the XP computers. I now managed to put the Vista computer on the same workgroup as all the other computers. I found the place to change that. But I still can only access the public folder on the Vista from the XP’s.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 4, 2007 at 10:55 pm in reply to: Microsoft updating files without permission? (n/a?) #1078128This is going to an unpopular idea but here goes. I learned long ago to refuse to update Windows. I’m talking about the constant patches, some of which work and some of which don’t work. Especially the security patches. No sooner does a security patch come out, and 10,000 naughty people are out there figuring out how to defeat it. So what is the point? Restore points are a big help when Microsoft sends out a lemon. But I just avoid the whole mess. I was content with XP home with service release 1. Every thing worked great. I had very few problems. But then I found I needed the update to Windows Movie Maker and so was forced to install SR2. I created a restore point, made an Acronis back up, held my breath and installed it from the free CD. And it worked. Since then I have installed nothing from Microsoft. And I see no need to. I did solve some nasty internet problems by installing and using FireFox. Last week I got a surprise when Microsoft’s firewall popped up. I have had that turned off since buying XP. Maybe MS is installing updates on my computers behind my back. I don’t know. But I have the update feature and the warnings all turned off. And haven’t had to seek help on this forum for quite a while now. If something isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Just my humble opinion.

AskWoody LoungerThanks for the link Joe. Lots of good info there. Unfortunately turning off the XP software didn’t help. And of course I did burn well over a 100 cd’s with this burner and software with things as they were. I am leaning toward Big Al’s suggestion that I have a burner going bad. Fortunately I have 3 other cd burners in the house and this one still does DVD’s. So I will limp along until I get the urge to replace it. I was going to try a different software package first but your tip gave me an idea. So I tried a drag and drop to the burner with the XP software re-enabled, and it didn’t see the blank cd either. Sounds like a hardware problem.
Thanks for the help everyone.

AskWoody LoungerNo Joe, I haven’t done that. Where do I find the disable burning program? That could have something to do with it. It’s worth a try. Thanks. I don’t even bother to install the drag and drop portion of the software. I got burned with that one a while back and lost a bunch of valuable data on a partially filled cd. Roxio 4 or so. It just decided it couldn’t read the cd any longer.

AskWoody LoungerI will try moving it just before throwing the drive in the trash. I’ve used that method before. Yesterday I had a 17″ monitor quit on my wifes computer. Moved it to another system and found it still dead. And the replacement works fine.
