    • in reply to: Sharing a printer on win95 with win2k #658473

(Edited by cbaldrey on 05-Mar-03 00:45. Edited to replace mild profanity.)

Good question Kent. The user on the w2k PC can “see” the w95 pc, but when I double-click on the computer (on the w95 pc in the w2k pc’s network neighbourhood…GOSH this is getting complex!!) I get an error saying the network path is not available (or such like, I’d have to throw Paul off his PC to cehck for certain…)

      Thanks for replying

      John

“Is this a domain or peer-to-peer network? Can you just type in the unc name for the printer?”

It’s a peer to peer network. Both machines are in the same workgroup. Typing in an identifier of the form dthxxxxvirologyprin just gives an error along the lines of “I can’t find a printer with that name, are you sure it’s there”

Thanks for trying to help Joe

“All we did was add a network printer.”

Thanks Joe. Would that be using the add printer wizard? If so, I tried that and I got as far as locating the w95 pc in the computer box, along with a little plus (to indicate a shared resource, I suppose) but trying to expand this only results in a brief hourglass and nothing revealed.

“When you setup a Windows 2000 Print Server, you can select drivers for other operating systems to use.”

Good thought, but the print server is the Windows 95 machine.

Yep, tried double-clicking. Although I can “see” the computer, if I double-click, it tells me that the computer can’t be found on the network.

      Thanks anyway.

      Thanks Charlie,

We’re running Windows 95 (don’t laugh, we are a sad neglected branch of the NHS)

Good suggestion, but I’d like to avoid actually having to do anything personally after hours, and connecting from home is not an option what with patient confidentiality issues etc.

Thanks David, I’ll give that a go and report back.

      {and (of course) in the best tradition of these boss things, no-one’s interested anymore…}

    • in reply to: IE5.5 toolbar (win98/5.5 sp1(i think)) #538321

      Hi Leif,

Not a customised version, BUT using my ISP dialler runs IE with no respect for homepage settings, and the toolbar wallpaper tool from Microsoft won’t retain it’s settings. Something’s going on, but I’ve no idea what…

    • in reply to: IE5.5 toolbar (win98/5.5 sp1(i think)) #538314

Answer Leif, but no, that’s not what I’ve done. The buttons look exactly as they should, but widely spaced. The nearest analogy I can think of is the appearance you used to get with old time word processors when full justification was turned on, and three words on the line…

      Thanks for replying.
But I’ve realised that I’ve not given enough details..
      bash

My IE at work is fine on the same resolution on the same size monitor, (15 inch, 800×600) with the buttons being (feeling foolish, I grab a ruler and measure the buttons off the screen…) about 2cm (3/4 inch) across.

At home, the same buttons are at least twice that.

They’ve been like that since I started using thefreeinternet as my ISP. An upgrade to 5.5 sp1 didn’t help.

      Is that better? grovel

First there was Gateway with their cow patterned logo and packaging. (Who knows why!)

As I understand it, the company was started by the younger son of a dairy-herd dynasty. I suppose it beats going into the church…
