Could it be Apple devices that are the problem? See this article here.

Clive, I think you’ll find that innovations in overhyped browsers like Chrome and Firefox have been pioneered (and continue to be pioneered) by the Opera team.

Anyway, your answer is NOT a solution to Ankit’s problem.

Ankit, Do you have any example links that someone who actually uses Opera can try?

    • in reply to: Slugs in my House #1296810

When we had slugs last year, it was obvious from the trails in the kitchen which opens from the back garden. They hid under the washing machine until dusk, then wandered round the kitchen. They didn’t come out if I left the kitchen light on.

So my strategy was: leave the light off, go through just after sunset and examine the kickboards of the kitchen units. Then I caught them and threw them in the bin. (there only turned out to be two of them, otherwise the job would have been harder.)

And I didn’t tell the wife.

    • in reply to: Opera – a recommended browser? #1224965

I’m currently using Firefox, and I truly think that it’s currently the best browser available. it’s customization with addons makes it tailored to my needs, although it uses a lot of memory and sometimes crashes (not very often though). I’ve just recently heard about this Opera browser, but after reading on the web I see that it is also uses a lot of memory and has a serious problem of websites incompatibility. A lot of people claim that they cannot browse a lot of websites (some very popular, like Facebook,CNN) with this browser, or that web pages never stop loading. On the other hand, it is reported to be very fast and very secure.

Anybody here using Opera browser? What do you think about it?

      TIA

I use Opera 10.54 beta ( from here ) exclusively and very very rarely come across a site I can’t visit. As the web becomes more standard-compliant website incompatibilities become rarer.

What you might find is that Opera doesn’t support addons in the same way as Firefox does, but I don’t find that a problem as that means there are less potential clashes where addons compete for resources and/or hooks. A lot of the addons that I might install in Firefox turn out to be enhancements to add functions that Opera has anyway out of the box   . Have a look at this rather old post here

      But (obviously) YMMV.

Try installing PDFCreator. This is a virtual printer that has options to “print” to several  file formats (not just PDF) including .ps files.

It is :free: and opensource, but it will ask if you want to install a toolbar (can’t remember which one) when you install.

    • in reply to: Opera 10.51 #1215121

yes used it for six months even updated to latest version. I find it much slower than either IE or FF and so many sites will not open it makes it useless.
So yes I am commenting from my own experience of trying to use it and still say it is inferior.

Have now uninstalled it as it is taking up disk space and I hardly  ever use it now.

Now waiting for all the Opera fanboys to go crazy.

I don’t think that you’ll find many crazy Opera fanbois here. But really, you’ll have to look into your browsing habits if you find “…so many sites will not open…”. Or maybe your “latest version” was version 3 or 4?

Also if you find it slower than IE or FF then your PC needs looked at…

Why would he want to use an inferior browser?

      Never used Opera then?

… Opera e-mail, though, looks interesting and I’ll give it a try. ….

      Frank

I’ve not used the Opera email client, but I do know that user either love or hate it. I would give the forums here a look before you commit to anything.

I know that this is solved, I also know that this question has been asked before and at that time, I referred to OP tothis thread where I detailed the steps I used to sort out a similar glitch or set of glitches.

…. In FF I’m depending heavily on add-ons such as Fasterfox, Greasemonkey, Memoryfox, Refreshblocker and Vacuumplaces as boosters and fixes, when these should be incorporated in the program itself.

In that case you want Opera

Oh, and I have always found Mozillazine to be the best place for support for TB etc

Some questions are easier to answer than others. The answer to your question is no.

The correct answer is that it depends on whether these are “real” files or shortcuts to files. Real files slow down your user experience (and your PC) something dreadful, shortcuts, OTOH, slow down the length of time it takes you to find something…

    • in reply to: How to Remove Software #1209765

You haven’t said if you tried to install it again from scratch. As Byron said, although counter-intuitive an over-the-top install often cleans out a broken install. If it does install this time, I would recommend another uninstall/install cycle to make sure things are fine.

    • in reply to: Changing Primary Hard Drives #1209078

Just in case it helps, I detailed some experiences in this thread

The cloning was accomplished by software freely download from Seagate’s website. This software (a cut down Acronis TI) will run on any PC with a Seagate or Maxtor HD (more details on the site).

The lesson to take away, I suppose is that HD manufacturers often supply disk cloning utilities to help migrate to their drives.

    • in reply to: Internet Disconnects Randomly #1208547

      John,

I’m not sure how this is relevant.  Is this something you drew from looking at my Firewall log?

The problem has gone away.  The last thing I consciously did to try to alleviate my Internet connection being lost at random times is based on the one thing that was still connected–Yahoo Messenger (mail version).  I set something up to constantly be communicating: An Internet clock. (http://www.clocklink.com/world_clock.php).  I saw it as an anchor for my Internet connection. It is low tech and theoretical.  Some day I’ll close the tab in Firefox and see if my connection issues return.

I’m glad you’ve solved the problem (for now). My comment was based on the line

      Code:
In Chrome, which had been open: Safari can't open the page "http://www.facebook.com/{friend name}.  The error is:  "unknown error" (kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10055)

in the textfile you posted earlier.

(aside and not directly relevant :- not everyone can read Microsoft’s propriety .xlsx etc formats, it’s probably polite to post something more Universal   )

Couldn’t get back into safe mode so tried to put xp on a different partition. It went well until it tried to reboot then it couldn’t load windows because it was missing a file called Hal.dll. How do I get that file back?

Have a look here and see if anything works. WARNING: read the whole page then make an informed choice   from the options given. Let us know how you get on.
