Look at the file called Readme.wri on the CD-ROM. It has a section on installation issues and gives some advice on how to fix problems when installing and un-installing Visio10 Beta, particularly in relation to other Office programs.

Personally, I never touch Beta releases. They are never fully featured and by their very nature, bug ridden.

I received my copy stuck to the cover of the Microsoft Australia Communique magazine. While it might be called a “marketing” beta, it is also a strategy by Microsoft to get bug reports from the field at zero cost to itself. If the product crashes you will be prompted to press a button that reports the crash details to MS via the Internet if you are connected.

You will also notice in Readme.wri that this version of the product is not supported by Microsoft – you are on your own.

My experience has been that the Works Add-in does not appear in the list of Add-ins in Word at Tools>Templates and Add-ins, but it is still there.

To overcome the problem go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, find Works Add-in and remove it from there, as BAM suggests.

This should stop you from being prompted to save Normal.dot.

Note that removing the Works Add-in does not affect the functionality of Works, it just prevents you from invoking Works from within Word.

      Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: Center Vertically #521300

      Hi Daes,

Converting “footnotes” to “endnotes” will let you center the page.

If the page you want to center is a single standalone page and not part of a longer document then this should solve your problem.

However, if the page you want to center is one page of a longer document, then convering the footnotes to endnotes will place the endnotes at the document’s end and this may not be what you want.

To convert footnotes to endnotes do this:

      1 Switch to Normal view.
2 On the View menu, click Footnotes.
3 In the note pane, click All Footnotes.
4 Select the notes you want to convert, and then right-click.
      5 Click Convert to Endnote.

On the left end of the button bar there will be 2 upright gray lines. Move the mouse so that the cursor is on these lines.

Then hold the left mouse button down.

Then drag the button bar down and to the left while still holding the left mouse button down.

The menu bar will then lock itself to the left side of the screen in a vertical direction.

Let me know how you go.

    • in reply to: can excel97 display like web browser… #1780002

I’m not sure if this is what you mean …. but …. you can move the menu bars to the left side of the screen by clicking on a vacant section of the menu, holding the left mouse button down and then dragging the menu to the left.

The menu bar will then lock itself to the left side of the screen in a vertical direction .. a bit like a web page menu.

      Hi Phil,

      Thanks for the advice.

    • in reply to: AutoComplete #517296

      Hi Phil,

So far as I am aware, if clearing History doesn’t do it then the only way to delete the Address Bar entries is to hack the Registry. See the MS KB article Q157729.

I don’t think that you need to drag vCards to Contacts to save them.

Have a look at this MS Knowledgebase Tip.

    • in reply to: Has anyone ever really taken a look at “index.dat” #1779332

Umm … I probably should have said it before: I really don’t think there is much joy in trying to get into the Index.dat files. This is for a number of reasons:

      1. Changing, moving or editing any files created by Windows (or by application software like IE that is integrated with it) is fraught with danger, causing un-anticipated problems, system instability, crashes, etc. While making changes to Index.dat seems to be benign, it’s not a good thing to do in principle.

      2. As I understand it, the Index.dat files are simply indexes of what is in the Cookies and Temporary Internet Files directories and are re-created each time IE starts. If you purged the references from Index.dat and didn’t get rid of the links in these two directories, then the next time Index.dat is created the references that you deleted from Index.dat are simply going to re-appear.

      3. If the real aim of the exercise is to eliminate the possibility of other people seeing where you have been surfing, then it’s unlikely that they are going to look in Index.dat. As you have found, it’s difficult to get into those files and so it’s unlikely that a random looker is going to seek there. Looking in the History, Cookies or Temporary Internet Files directories is dead easy and they are going to look there, if anywhere. It’s from these directories that you should purge the links you don’t want anyone to see.
