The two machines are running XP. I also used a third machine, using 2003, to see what it showed.

and it is only the rotate button that is greyed out.

Just had another close look at the doco on M2. It shows all the pages as landscape, not the final one as portrait, as I had led you to believe – sorry.

On M2, it is just the image of the table that is showing the wrong way. It needs to be rotated 90 degrees to the right, but option to rotate is greyed out. Yet it displays correctly on M1 and in Word 2003 on another machine.

Good call on the section breaks, but not the problem. There are no section breaks in the document.

      The whole document is landscape.

I may have confused the issue somewhat by talking about a table. The table is an image inserted in the document. It was scanned from elsewhere and is an image, not a table.

There are no macros running either.

What I dont understand is why one machine will display the document differently to the other. Surely Word will display an document according to the ‘instructions’ set in it. If there are page breaks, it shows page breaks. If there are section breaks, it shoudl show section breaks. It should be the same, no matter which machine? Or have I missed something?

Yes, I had checked all those things.

I was able to get a Netgear card nic to use as a test, and I was connected to the network instantly. So it was a hardware failure.

Thank you to those who posted suggestions. I really appreciate these forums as a source of information, knowledge and wisdom.

What I have also found interersting in this exercise is that unless the laptop was under warranty, there was no way that fixing the hardware was going to be a cost effective solution. The machine is a Compaq Presario laptop bought as a refurbished machine and a 3 month warranty which had run out. I was strongly advised against trying to repair it with a replacement part. The cost of sending it to an authorised dealer (I am 500 kms from the nearest authorised dealer) and them replacing it with an appropriate item was not worth it – especially as I can get one of these Netgear cards for $60 or so. It destroys the lines and look of the machine, but I have no other choice.

      Thanks again.

      thanks for your reply.

I am aware of what the response to an ipconfig command should look like, and i’ve never seen this response before.

And, yes, you read right. There is a domain involved here, but it also contains a workgroup. I am new to this organisation where they have bought the last few laptops with XP Home ‘because it was cheaper’ and dont understand why they cant see all the resources on the domain.

The machine in question has been able to connect to the workgroup in the past.

I will follow up the issue of a different nic and let you know.

Yeah, that’s not a bad option, but it does not slow it down very much. I might do some investigating about a non MS version of the game

      Thank you Bob.

I had put a version of the file in c:windows and it did not work. But using the c:windowssystem directory has.

Thank you to everyone who had a suggestion. And yes, I will investigate upgrading the macros in the file – but after our race on Saturday.

(If you happen to be near Griffith, NSW on Saturday, come out to the race. Am I allowed to put this plug in?)

Thank you. The problem will be which version of the file I need.

I will post it to the Win 98 forum and see what results I get. Any other suggestions are still welcome
