I have been right clicking the folder, selecting Properties, and then going into both the permissions for sharing and the security settings.

Am I not in the right place?

      Thanks for the input.

Yes, I am using the square root symbol – it looked like a tick to me, and suited the purpose.

I don’t know what operating systems the others are using, so I’ll follow that thought when I am troubleshooting further.

      Thanks for the pointers.

I thought about the fonts issue, but we are using arial, so I assumed that we would be ok.

What I am thinking I will need to do is open the templates using an older version, and saving them as templates in that version. XP will read backwards, and the older ones will be ok.

I was hoping that it would be easier than that.

      Thanks again for the advice.

I had tried to repair, but had chosen the repair option when it first appeared.

I tried again with repair as the option following Install. And I’m up and going again.

      Thank you.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

When I typed in explorer.exe, I got the error message “The file doe not have a program associated with it to perform this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel”.

I can click the Browse button, and can see the contents of the drive. I found c:windowsexplorer.exe and tried that … same result.

And no, there have been no changes in software or hardware recently.

      Any more ideas?

By nothing running, I mean there are no applications running. There are the usual services, and nothing looks out of place.

I cannot “go to File | New task you should be able to type in explorer.exe” because I have no Start button, no task bar, no icons. I do not have a desktop. I cannot get to a System Restore because I have no GUI. My blue screen is not that of death, just one that is that ‘delightful’ Windows blue.

I have seen this before in a Win2k machine on a domain, where the profile was corrupted. I was able to log in as administrator, delete the profile and start again.

But in this case, there is only a single user, and the same problem exists for the hidden admin profile.

There was a really good, clearly written, article from WindowsIT Pro magazine in April about using Google better.

Thank you for the tip of going to the Geek. The article was helpful. I still ran into problems with the reinstallation, and was ready to do a full format and restart. The last error I had was a ‘unsigned certificate’ error for OE 5, even though I was trying to install OE 6.

I went to the MS update site, and a few updates later, hey presto, off she went. Bingo!!

Thanks for your help, and aplogies for taking so long to let you know the resolution.
