And in a completely different twist, forwarding on Jezza’s link to a friend has resulted in me getting a new job!!

I have been sending this friend a techie cartoon every Friday for a few years, but lately had stopped for no particular reason. When I saw Jezza’s link, I forwarded that to him. He was looking for a techie and an hour or so discussion later and I started yesterday.

Thanks Jezza. The next one’s on me (even if it is not my turn)

      Hi Ken,

      No worries.

I didn’t know of, or think about, the renaming trick. I’ll try that and see what happens.

The file that I downloaded was boot98se.exe. I can’t see where the one you downloaded is. Perhaps that was my problem.

That information about the .ima files was added after I posted here.

      Jim,

You are working with your project files and then you need to export your output file (the one that you have ‘split off’) into either .mp3 or .wav file.

ps I agree, Audacity is fabulous

Another day later … (a good way to spend the day inside when it is so hot out there)

The boot disk download still needed a floppy drive to extract to, and I simply do not have one anywhere anymore. I tried many things, and my final solution was to install WinNT instead. One CD and the installation went like a dream. And the software I wanted ran on it easily.

One day, I might go back to looking at Win 98SE, but right now it’s not my best friend.

For the record, the thread I started at that forum and the answer.

      Thanks Ken

I’ll go there and see what I can find.

      Hi Joe,

Yes, I am sure that the software was installed using the admin account.

How can I see the permissions in the registry? What do I need to change?

    • in reply to: MS Virtual PC 2007 #1183840

Does anyone know where there are some instructions? Can I transfer the four Win 98 Boot disks to a USB and then use that?

I guess this got lost in amongst the chageover. I’d still like to know an answer if anyone has time to think about it with me.

A couple of recent threads in General Windows and Vista got me to thinking about updating my VPC 2007 with SP1 and the hotfix.

No problems there. The only thing I keep virtual machines available for is Win98SE and Win2K, just in case. While verifying that my updates went OK, I realized that I have VERY OLD versions of Internet Explorer on those two setups – i.e. Version 5 and 6!

Is it a problem to upgrade those two IEs in a virtual machine environment? I have no idea which versions of IE those two operating systems can run, but I’m going to go to the MS site now to see what I can find out. Thanks.

      Al,

Can you point me in the direction of some instructions for installing Win 98 onto Virtual PC? The host machine I have does not have a floppy disk drive. I have a DVD with Win 98 on it and I used Nero to make as ISO from it. But Virtual PC doesn’t seem to like it. You can see from the image that I get to where it asks what to do with a: and I did a dir command to see what the contents of that drive were, but I am stuck.

In other words – It doesn’t matter, you want to avoid both.

That’s always been my policy …

    • in reply to: Dust photos #1178856

I saw the image but where is this dust coming from? At first, I thought it was left over from the fires because of the way the NASA picture looked. Here I’m complaining about Tazzy shedding and you guys are worse off.

The dust came from the Lake Eyre Basin, apparently. But it is hard to know. There are always areas of drought and areas of flood and fire in Australia. A simplistic answer, I know. Even though there is water in Lake Eyre at the moment, there are large swathes of land that have not had moisture on them for a long time.

I said that we were expecting more ‘raised dust’ and apparently we got it. I ducked down to Melbourne for the weekend and was cold and wet. But now that I am home, the windows show a story that prove that the predictions were true.

It has been so dry for so long (about 7 years for us) that there is no subsoil moisture anymore. Any wind will whip up the topsoil and strip it and send it on its way to wherever. We get red dust from the north and west and we get white dust from the south and south west. Spring is the worst time and we can get a storm every couple of days.
