An alternative to the search engines mentioned above, you might want to check out the DoNotTrackMe add-in, depending on the browser you use. http://www.abine.com/donottrackme/faq/

Small consolation, but your wife is not alone. I’ve had the same problem, and have done quite a bit of searching for a solution. Besides just disabling the notification, I have seen a few other suggested fixes, but none have worked for me. Like you, I am lerry of just turning off the notification. (i.e. Telling Security Center that you have an AV that Security Center doesn’t recognize. The only possible causes of this issue are (1) MICROSOFT Security Center is not familiar with MICROSOFT Security Essentials, or (2) there is a (dare I say it?) BUG in the Security Center software! Either way, it doesn’t appear Microsoft is planning to do anything about it, so your only options are ignore the warning, or disable the check. (Or run Ubuntu!)

      Hi Fred,

Thanks for an excellent article. A year or two ago, I made the switch from AVG to MSE because AVG seemed to be getting very porcine. Looks like it wouldn’t have made as much difference as I thought.

One measurement I would like to see is a measure of ‘random’ resource usage spikes. (I have no idea how you could measure this.) It seems that every once-in-a-while MSE suddenly starts sucking up nearly all my CPU cycles, and brings everything else to a crawl. This usually lasts from several seconds to several minutes. I don’t believe it is associated with updating or with scheduled scans, but I have no idea what else it might me doing. I most often notice it when scrolling a window becomes impossible and my disk access light goes nearly solid ‘on’.

If you figure this out, I think it would be an extremely enlightening column to add to your chart.

I’ve been noticing some FF wierdness since FF9, maybe FF8, too. My browser will become incredibly slow, and I notice nearly constant disk thrashing. Task manager shows FF using 400+ Meg of memory, and a high percentage of CPU time. I close FF, but the disk access and sluggishness continues. Although there are no FF windows showing up on the system, task manager still shows a firefox.exe process running, and it never ends. Virus scans and system clean-ups haven’t helped. I suspect it might have something to do with virtual memory use, and the disk thrashing is swapfile access, but I don’t know and I haven’t found a solution. Thoughts?

I got an external HD about a year ago and have been quite happy with Clonezilla. It is probably not the easiest to learn, but it does what I need it to.

    • I just found this article at MakeUseOf.com last week.

Replace Windows Explorer With A More Powerful Alternative”

Hopefully, you will find it useful.

    • in reply to: Compare and merge worksheets in Microsoft Excel #1197302

…The alternative is to create a sheet with formulas that compare corresponding cells in the original worksheet and the edited one.

What I’m hearing is that Excel doesn’t have the capability of comparing two (unshared) worksheets. Is that correct?

Could you elaborate on your suggestion? I think I could do something like this and just tell ‘Same’ or ‘Different’ for each corresponding cell. Is there a way I could display the old and new contents of the cell? Is there a way I could detect added or deleted rows?

      Thanks for your help.
