100 meters is the usual spec for an individual wire. I usually just say 300ft since I’m not used to quoting things in metric. LOL

Just to close this out. I did a complete reinstall which fixed many other little annoyances. Have not had any other problems with this computer since then. Took me a good solid day to get it back to where my wife had everything she wanted. Then slowly added back in all the other little things that I keep and use on “HER” computer.

    • in reply to: Slow win 7 explorer search #1289019

I have the computer on balanced with never sleep and turn off display after 2 minutes. I seldom ever power off this computer. Even if I go away for a few days I leave it on so I can access it remotely. I also do not reboot except when Win update requires it or I think the system needs to be rebooted after some changes I have made or software I have installed. I don’t do anything different on this computer than I do with my wife’s computer and I do ALL the maintenance, she is a user only and not technically attuned.

    • in reply to: how can I set the default folder when Outlook opens #1288948

I can’t tell you how to change the startup folder for Outlook 2003, but for Outlook 2010, the instructions are at:

      http://living-with-outlook-2010.com/outlook2010tips/2011/03/select-the-outlook-2010-startup-folder/

Just follow the instructions you find there, and navigate to the folder you want Outlook 2010 to start in and you’re good to go.

      I hope this helps!

      –Bill

I tried to follow this, but it does not apply to Outlook 2003, but I have Office 2010 Pro sitting here waiting to be installed, so it will be useful down the road. Thanks

    • I fought a similar problem with IE9 beta and could not get it to uninstall no matter all the good advice from the folks here. Also could not get SP1 to install or some prereqs for the Blackberry Desktop. I finally gave up and formatted the hard drive after I made a clone of the system so I could go back if I needed to. Now everything works great. It was a pain in the you know what, but the system is running cleaner and nicer than ever and everything that I needed to install worked without errors. I did not reinstall any application software until I had gotten SP1 and every update installed. One thing I’ve learned in this day of large hard drives is that I make a complete copy of all my application CD/DVDs to a hard drive and I have not had any problem reinstalling software by just going to the appropriate folder and running setup.exe. Sure saves me a lot of time looking for all the CDs. If a key code is needed I make a text file and store that in the same folder and I can just open that file and copy and paste when needed.

I appreciate all the ideas, but so far I’m getting nowhere. I am running Win 7 x32 and not x64. Keep any tips coming. I like it.

      jnealand,
Hello… sounds like you have two problems…

1.You do not see “Installed Updates” where you are looking… (cnt’l panel programs and features) that will tell you what software is installed ( unless you click on View Installed Updates) …not windows updates.Just to be sure try this… to see what “updates” are installed, you need Control Panel > Action Center>Windows Update>Installed Updates… This will show what is installed. Also when in “Windows Update” click on “Change Settings ” make sure all is set to the way you wish.

The system says there are “No updates installed” even when I clicked show updates option. This was incorrect since there have been many updates installed in the last month. Some installed automatically and some that I installed trying to solve my problem. I could install an update, reboot, and then immediately go to control panel and it would show no updates installed. And that update was never offered again so it was installed, but not displayed as installed.

      2. If you can not install SP-1…this is a different problem… and is usually solved by applying previous patches offered … There are many threads about installing SP-1 on this forum … just do a search and you will pull up many threads … If you still can’t install post back and we will help you “get er done” Regards Fred

When SP1 failed both from CD and from using Windows updates, it provided troubleshooting info which consisted of downloading other updates or running some kind of fix tool. Nothing worked. I finally just saved all the data, formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything. Now the system has SP1 and the current version of IE9. I don’t intend to ever again install a beta version of IE. At any rate this problem is solved and case closed.

See Drive balancer for information and download links.

      Joe

I found that link earlier, but you have to be a member to download the program. I am trying to quit joining more forums, etc. I belong to so many now and seldom ever visit them. They just become another potential security threat to my personal information and another login to remember. But I will do what I have to do.

See WHS drive balancing addin & WHS drive balancing utility for more information and a download link.

      Joe

I sure could not find a download link on either of these references. When I click on the “download here” all I get is a an ad window. Not good.

    • in reply to: Repair install for XP Home SP3 #1281927

When I stated working on this computer I started by running ccleaner and let it clean up all the temps and stuff and then did a registry clean. The computer has not blue screened since I did that so I am just watching to see if the BSOD comes back or maybe it was just an anomaly caused by stuff that needed to be deleted. I normally do not touch this computer until my son or grandkids complain. I keep it around to keep them off all the other computers in the house.

    • in reply to: Re-examining Dropbox and its alternatives #1281925

For those of you needing access to your data through the internet, you might look at pogoplug. You connect it to your local area network, attach a USB hard drive, set up an account via pogoplug.com to control access and you can see all your info, even from a smartphone. Just another alternative.

Being an old timer who used to work in the mainframe days, I think of the cloud as just a big mainframe that is shared by many users and many apps. When PCs came out everyone wanted to move to PCs so that they controlled their own data, now we are putting it back into a mainframe. Just that it is not down the hall or within out physical complex. What goes around comes around. The youngsters here probably don’t even know what a mainframe is / was. LOL.

    • in reply to: Firefox 4 and Roboform 6.10.2 fix #1281921

      Switz,

RoboForm had to write NEW code for all the new browser versions {IE 9, FF 4, Chrome 11} they deserve to be compensated for that effort. You didn’t have to upgrade your browsers to the latest version in which case RF6 would have kept on working just fine. I’ve been using RF6 for several years and they kept it upgraded to work with many new browser versions.
The idea that you pay once and get service for the rest of your life is a little far out there don’t you think?

The aggravating part is that they did write the new code and ver 6 did run with the FF4 beta. Ver 6 does work fine with IE9 so as much as I like FF, I may just switch back to IE as it is significantly better than it was when I switched to FF years ago.

    • in reply to: Malwarebytes Free Version #1281920

Malwarebytes has a great reputation as a removal tool after all others have failed. However it does not have a great reputation for stopping the infection in the first place which is why many websites recommend using one of the major AV products for your everyday protection. I trust MalwareBytes without hesitation as long as you download it from their site only.

    • in reply to: Bios upgrade necessary for Win 7 64-bit? #1281919

On my ASUS netbook I did have to install a bios update in order to get some of the special keys software to work and for some of the battery saving programs. The netbook ran fine without the bios update, but some of the special asus programs would not run.

    • The first thing to do is to see if check disk will run against the bad partition. If that does not work then I would recommend that you just reinstall the OS and all your programs. That will probably be faster in the long run. Unless I had data on the partition that I really needed I would just start over.
