      Dear st3333ve,

Actually, you were not beating a dead horse. When I unchecked, “automatically update ” Style the first time, I realized it was not the Normal font, but “Normal + Centered” or some other style. The trick you showed me ONLY works if you uncheck “automatically update” for the Normal font, not “Normal + Centered” or any other one.

Well, I unchecked it for normal and the problem has disappeared. Thanks a lot,

      JMT

      Hello,

I don’t think that is the problem.

First off, I don’t have “automatically update styles” checked (neither in the Templates and Add-Ins box nor in the Modify Style box–is that where you mean?).

Second off, when I make a change to a part of the document, the ENTIRE document changes, not just entires with that style. For example, if I select the title, which is “Normal + Garamond Bold, 15 pt, Bold, All caps, Centered,” and I change it to 13 pt, then everything becomes Centered, 13 pt., all caps Garamond. However, Heading 2 stays Arial (it doesn’t become Garamond font) and for some reason, it becomes unbolded and items that were bolded in the TOC also become unbolded.

If I press “Control Z,” then the changes made throughout the document are undone, but the changes made in the selection remain intact. If I press Control Z twice, then the changes made throughout the document are undone and those made in the selection also become undone.

      Any clues?

      Hi Stuart,

Isn’t that the same as clearing “automatically update” in the Modify Style dialogue box? I guess not, since it worked.

Also, will clearning the “Automatically update document styles” box affect only this one document or all of them?

      Thanks,

      JMT

Thanks! I hope this will work and I won’t lose anymore work.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable – see Help 19)

      Hi Mark,

I went to the page you suggested, and I found where it says, “No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations

This policy specifies that Automatic Updates will wait for the computer to be restarted by any user who is logged on to complete a scheduled installation. If this policy is not used, the computer restarts automatically.”

But what do I do with that? How do I turn off automatic updates? Do I click where it says, http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downl…ent/default.asp%5B/url%5D?

When you say “pro” do you mean Microsoft Windows pro? I have Windows XP Home Edition.

      Thank you for helping me,

      JMT

      Hi Hans,

When I press cntrl + A to update the TOC, Word keeps sending me a dialogue box to ask if I want to update only the page numbers for every TOC in the document. Is there a way to select, “Yes to all,” rather than keep checking the boxes?

      Thank you,

      JMT

      Hans:

So if I understand correctly, you are suggesting that I create the second TOC as an outline-based TOC, and in order to avoid having all of the style-based entries that will be in my first TOC, that I go back and remove the outline levels from the styles of the items that I don’t want in my second TOC. Therefore, I will have one TOC based on styles and one based on outlines, and neither will have entries meant to go to the other.

That sounds nice, but what if I am writing a book with five chapters, and each chapter has its own table of contents. Using your method, I will only be able to get at most two TOCs. If, on the third one, I base it on styles, then entries from my first, styles-based TOC will get in there. If I base my third one on outline levels, then stuff from my second, outline-based TOC will get in there.

      Can I get around this?

      Pam:

That sounds like a good idea, but will a table of figures be clickable? I mean, will I be able to click on it and get right to the page I want?

      Thanks,

      JMT

      Hi Hans,

      Actually, that is not what my TOC field looks like. It looks like this: { TOC O “1-1″H Z }

I still don’t understand how to create a second table of contents for a second set of entries by using styles, while preventing entries from my other TOC appearing in there.

      How can I do it?

Wait one minute: do you mean that each time I send someone a document based on a customized template I have to send them the template with the document?

    • in reply to: Language input (XP Home Edition) #1030133

Hello, once I get to the “Regional Options” tab, I don’t see where I can choose “Standards and formats” and “Location” to be default choices. I have Windows XP. Any idea as to what I can do?

    • in reply to: ‘Add to template’ (2003) #1030132

      Thanks Pam and Jscher,

This might explain why the changes weren’t being saved. I think they were saving to Normal maybe because the template wasn’t properly attached. Let me see if I can figure this out and get back to you.

Do you mean to say that when I check the checkbox under the Templates and Add-Ins dialog box, every change that I have made to the template fo the document I was working with (usually Normal.dot) gets saved to all my tempates, including Outline.dot??? Is there a way to stop that?

    • in reply to: Changing a template (2003) #1029459

Well that worked like a charm.

By the way, when I go to modify one of my styles in a given template, in a dialog box, two check boxes appear. The one of the left says, “Add to template” and the one of the right says, “Automatically update.” Does the “Automatically update” checkbox in that dialog box do the same thing as the “Automatically update document styles” checkbox in the “Templates and Add-ins” dialog box under the “Tools” menu?

      Thanks,

      JMT

    • in reply to: Default folder in ‘open’ dialog box (2003) #1029378

As I mentioned, I set it to go to Semester 3, and it is no longer going there, since about a week now. Rather, it just goes to the last folder that I had open.

    • in reply to: Changing a template (2003) #1029339

Actually, that didn’t quite solve the problem because I just realized I had updated to the wrong template! Essentially, I just realized that I have my document linked to the wrong template. It is linked to Normal.dot but it should be linked to Outline.dot.

It is too late to do anything about this?

      Thank you,

      JMT
