That works, but is there no more direct way? I’d like to be able to skip that step if I could . . .

      Hi Everyone,

How do I get into the “TOC 1” style to uncheck “automatically update”? Word is only letting me get into the “TOC 1 + (Latin) Garamond, 12 pt, Centered” style and that one is already unchecked. How do I get into TOC 1? It doesn’t show on the dropdown menu on top and it doesn’t show on the panel on the right (that appeals through Format/Styles and Formatting.

      Please help,

      JMT

      Hi there,

I tried those remedies, but still no luck.

I am attaching a sample of the document. Can you see if it can be fixed?

      Thank you.

That Go To function is quite a fancy trick. It helped me to find the culprit section without expending too much time. Thanks for your help! How do you know so much?

    • in reply to: Gutters (2003) #1046069

Thank you, Hans, but how can you know that that is section 5?

I tried to “click between these two section breaks (or click near the end of the section with two columns, then use the right-arrow key until you see Sec 5 in the status bar,” but I couldn’t. Do you mean that I should right click between the 2 sections? If so, what do I do with the menu that pops up? Also, where is the status bar?

Also, how did you locate the problem? My document all together is 182 pages. Do I have to just manually click in every section (I think there are 29 sections) until I find the one causing the problem?

I checked every section where there are two columns set up, and made sure that “Equal column width” is ticked. But the document still won’t let me set up a .3″ gutter, not even a .1″ gutter for that matter.

I can’t post the entire document here because of its size (1.06 MB), but if you have any other suggestions, we can go forward.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks Hans. How is it that some of these TOA entries in in paragrah styles and others are in psuedo-styles? At any point, did I do anything to make them different? The entire outline is based on and outline-numbering styles template and I deliberately italicized every entry going into the TOA. Thus, I don’t know why some are showing up as pseudo styles that are italicized in the TOA while others are not.

      Thanks,

      JMT

      Hi Hans,

Can you just clarify this: “If you now select the pseudo style that was applied to ‘See Martin v. Peyton’ and update the TOA (click in it and press F9), *all* entries will be italic.”

After I select that pseudo style, what do I do exactly? Also, how do I select that style? From the Styles panel on top or on the Styles and Formatting Pane on the right (from the Tools menu)?

      Thanks,

      JMT

    • in reply to: Table of Authorities (Word 2003) #1044703

      Hi Hans,

This excerpt was actually taken from a longer outline, in which each paragraph was a level in an outline (heading 5 was 5 deep; heading 4 was 4 deep, etc.). Thus, I can’t apply normal to all the paragraphs. To make it clearer, I am attaching a longer excerpt from the original document with the outline formatting still in tact, and with a TOA.

None of the italics are embedded in any of the Styles; I specifically remember having gone into each case name and manually adding italics. Thus, that can’t be the problem.

The solution can’t be to apply normal formatting to all of the entries, since they all have necessary heading styles that can’t be disposed of.

Any clue you can offer would be greatly appreciated. If we can get all of the cases italicized, or none italicized, that would solve the problem.

      Thank you.

      Sincerely,

      JMT

Thanks, Hans, but I am showing that the entry for the second TOA is also set to italics. Specifically, it is set to “Heading 4 + Italic.” Is the reason they are acting differently because the first paragraph has “Style Heading 5 + (Latin) Italic” formatting? Is it the “Latin” that does it? What is that?

By the way, with both entries, only the actual entry is put in italics, with the rest of the paragraph in regular script.

      Sincerely,

      JMT

It sure does. To date, I have found the problem only when there is an Odd Page section break. The problem is, I can’t get rid of those. It is a manuscript I am preparing and I need the new sections to start on new odd pages.

      Thanks,

      JMT

      Hi All,

The problem just reappeared again, so I got my regular mouse and attached it to the laptop and the same problem that I was having with the touchpad was also there. So it’s not the touchpad. But just as I was getting ready to upload the document to show you, the problem disappeared! So now I think the problem is a bug in Microsoft Word or Windows.

      Hopefully it will go away.

      Thanks!

      Hi All,

I am also scrolling by brushing my finger up the right side of the touchpad (and by the way, I am also using page layout; I never use web layout). Nevertheless, I sometimes get this bouncing problem and I sometimes don’t. I am suspecting it is a hardware problem since its coming and going is so arbitrary and unpredictable. Next time it happens, I will connect my mouse and see if the problem is solved. If it is, then I know it’s the touchpad.

      Sincerely,

      JMT

      Hello,

I am attaching a document that is giving me this problem.

Go the way down to page 6. Then try scrolling upward with your laptop’s touchpad scroller (don’t use page up/page down and the arrows). It will scroll up fine, until you get to page 5. It will keep bouncing back to page 5 and won’t let you get ot page 4. It is like there is a sticky trap at the words “Appendix: Compilation of Key Statutes and Rules.”

      Any ideas?

Hello, I am not sure if the document is protected for forms. I don’t know what that is.

It seems that the document is scrolling again. Maybe I changed something . The next time I catch it bouncing again I will cut out the appropriate pages and post it here for more clarification.

      Thank you,

      JMT

Thanks, Jscher2000, that was it: Outlook was wrapping around the text, so when I reduced the width necessary for wrapping, it stopped, thus displaying more items in the list without reducing the font size.

      Thank you.
