      Dear Hans,

I need a textbox or otherwise a table or some other solution for texts lasting more than one page that needed to go into a box.

In the attached document, the first entry is created as a table.

The second entry is created as a texbox behind the writing.

Both look similar, but the table actually allows itself to break at the end of the page and to continue on the next page. That is what I am going after. Notice how the textbox does not do that. It just abruptly ends.

The table looks good, but there is just one problem. Word does not allow me to put the table as an entry within my outline. Note how the textbox is the entry that goes beside the Heading 2 “B.” outline entry. I can’t, however, put the table next to the Heading 2 “A.” outline entry. I have to put the “A.” inside of the table.

Is there a way to get around that’

      Sincerely,

      JMT

That’s a neat trick, but what I really need is to find a way to somehow break up the textbox so that it splits in 2 whenever the bottom end is hanging over the end of a page. I need that bottom part to roll over to the next page. Anyone have a clue?

      Sincerely, JMT

This is almost too easy. And I thought that they got rid of that feature!

      Best regards,

Thanks Hans! This immediately resoloved the problem as usual. I haven’t had a chance to look at the other posts . . . this slide show has been consuming a good deal of time. But I will do so momentarily.

Hello, I am using Word 2003. When I go under the View Menu, I see no Style Area option that makes the styles visible. Do you know how it works in Word 2003? Maybe Format and then “Styles and Formatting”?

      Sincerely,

      JMT

      Dear Hans,

So would my TOC code (where the name of my “Chapter” is “Constitution”) be TOC o “1-2” b Constitution h z u instead of TOC O “1-2” H Z U ?

      Sincerely,

      JMT

      Hi all,

I am not sure how to bookmark a section of the document. Hans wrote, “- Create a bookmark for each chapter (i.e. a bookmark Chapter1 containing the entire text of chapter 1, a bookmark Chapter 2 containing the entire text of chapter 2, etc.),” but I still don’t know how to go about doing so.

In the attached document, you can see that entries from the second mini-talb eof contents are finding their ways into the first mini-table of contents and vice versa. They need to be kept separate. How can that be done?

      Sincerely,

      JMT

Wow! Autoformat is great! Let me try one more: what if I were to take the attached document, and wanted to get rid of all those little circles that are in the beginning of each section (you have ot turn on show/hide formatting)? What are those circles? If I go into Find&Replace, what is the code I put in for those circles so that it catches only those and not normal spaces?

      Sincerely,

      JMT

Thanks for these responses, which helped, but what does format/autoformat do? I tried that but it didn’t do anything.

Also, is there a similar way to get rid of the all of these soft returns in the attached document (I don’t know if they are really called soft returns, but they look like little arrows when you press “show/hide formatting”) and replace them with hard returns?

      Sincerely,

      JMT

Thanks for that great reply, but for the “find,” do I literally put in “^13([a-z])”? The “find” is saying that no items were found . . .

Well, macros are a little over my head, but Hans’ suggestion worked. Thank you.

      Hello,

I have this document (attached) and I created a special outline template for it so that it is keyed to my textbook.

However, for some reason, level 8 only displays “©” and skips every other letter of the alphabet. Furthermore, level 9 only shows “(ii)”.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem?

      Sincerely,

      JMT

    • in reply to: Formatting (Word 2003) #1046940

This problem is showing up all over again, even though I am following all of the instructions in this post. In the attached document, if you go to the first page, and left align the words “Table of Contents,” the whole table of contents changes, even though “automatically update” is not ticked for that style.

What could be the problem here?
