Same here. I looked all over both screens and saw nothing.

    • in reply to: Going Google (apps), Part 1: Move your mail #1388480

I personally use Outlook as my email client because I am long familiar with how that mail system works. When I get my mail, I prefer it to be on MY computer so that I always have access to it. The last version of Outlook I enjoyed using was 2003. Why? For some unknown reason Microsoft decided that coloring your messages as they come into the inbox was a Bad Thing. (frankly, for me that was helpful to always be able to see (at a glance) which of my mails were the most important. For me, this was very effective at saving time. I’ve never found any other email program that will do this.

As for using Google…. I am learning to not like (and not trust) Google.

For example, I live in the Ukraine but I am an American. If I need a support site for my problem, Google decides, based on my IP address, to take me somewhere else (where it will all be in Russian or Ukrainian.) There is NO WAY to opt out of this. There is NO WAY to avoid it. Sometimes even typing something like “www.website.com” will take me to some Russian or European website instead.

Another example : I pull up Google and do a search. I would estimate about 1/5 the time I get this Capitcha page instead of a search results page, telling me I have been sending too many searches from my computer and NOW must type in the special characters in order to see my search page.

The problem with this is I have NOT sent any prior searches for likely hours; there is no malware on my system, I do not have a virus, etc. I may have just turned on my computer after sleeping for hours, making it impossible for my computer to have been sending searches to Google already. Again, there is no way to opt out of this. With such messed up control Google is leveraging on the Internet, I am surprised you can suggest giving them even MORE control over your data.

I would be interested to know how truly necessary that “spacer” was for the SSD. Do the chips create any heat? Do you need a small space for heat bleed-off into the air?

Over time, will your changes cause teh drive to lose some performance or to fail prematurely?

Another thing about the system date being incorrect –

If you are using GW Basic (I know, its old) and writing progams using date$ variable, this will reset the computer’s time to whatever value you assign to that variable.

    • in reply to: Is your free AV tool a 'resource pig?' #1319849

      Hello Fred!

First off, I’d like to thank you for being a constant “companion” to me from windows 98 and on. You never failed to keep me informed on how to keep my computer running well. When I was a cable internet installer, I often suggested your Langalist to folks who were not computer-savvy and wanted to learn to be. I felt your resource was the best on the Internet.

Initially, when I read your recommendation on MSE, I did want to give it a try. however, since I live in the Ukraine (I have a native wife and daughter), we got our new computer with Windows 7 Home installed on it (we could not afford anything else). Unfortunately, MSE will install according to the Window’s language in use. I cannot change it so I am left with Russian (which I cannot understand). Because of this, I uninstalled MSE regretfully. The time it was running, I did not perceive any slowing of my system (disk, ram, etc).

I wanted to know if there is some way I can get English instead of Russian? I know loading a difference language will cause Windows 7 to be flagged as not genuine because of some program in Windows designed to validate by checking language files checksums. Using a translator is equally not good because you cannot copy any dialog boxes. Previously there was software that would do this, but Microsoft has closed that route also by preventing such software form working in windows 7. From all thatI could learn, it seems Windows has 100% prevented using any other language on a home system except the one in which it was purchased (and the Windows serial number is connected to).

My question to you is, is there ANY provision for changing this? Will Microsoft show mercy on folks like me and allow English only instead of the Russian language on my system? We are very poor and cannot afford anything. (we live on my wife’s disability which doesn’t cover much). I cannot even buy another year of Windows Secrets.

Thank you very much for your Time, Fred. God bless!

      Jory M. Earl

    • in reply to: The thousand-dollar penalty for reusing passwords #1305159

I recently downloaded and installed LastPass (because free beats paying for Roboform, which I can no longer pay for). The first gotcha was on setting a master password. When I put one in (generated off their website), the program immediately closed every browser window and cleared the Windows clipboard, preventing me from copying it to save on my system. The 2nd gotcha was when I tried to reset the master password from the website. This action FAILED because some plugin was not installed. What a minute… Did not the installation of the software run properly? (there were ZERO errors on completion of the installation). The 3rd gotcha was when I tried an alternate method to change the password – again failure. As per the support instructions, I cleared the browser cache and restarted my computer. Again, the password reset failed and again, it said “plugin not installed”. I could not find this special plugin anywhere on the LastPass website. I tried reinstalling the software and still the process failed and for the same reason. I sent an email to their support. A couple minutes later I got a Delivery Status Notification – Failure. I had clicked on the email address provided by the website, but for some reason I could not contact their support. So I was alone with my issue. Out of frustration I went back to firefox and did something that you should NOT have to do – I searched mozilla for addons and specified LastPass. It found that plugin and installed it. The 4th gotcha is when I tried this process again – this time, although I had the plugin installed, I was informed that “this process will fail if you proceed”. And indeed, it failed again. I again reinstalled the software and created a new account. This time I manually typed a password in for master password. A word of warning here – you MUST use 32 characters. Not more, not less (or THIS process will fail until you get the amount of characters correct). I made VERY certain this time to copy the password BEFORE clicking anything. As per the instructions about roboform, I downgraded from 7 to 6 and ran the export process they instructed. This saved an HTML file which I imported into lastpass. This worked fine. I then began to test various logons at random. At this point, the only issue I had was one time where it refused to autofill my entire google account name – it only filled in half even though the edit box showed the correct and complete logon name. Summary – even though this software (at the moment) seems to be functioning, I cannot suggest it to other people. The process is NOT user friendly and you get ZERO support.

    • in reply to: Avoid the security risk of shortened URLs #1256654

I saw your links in MS Outlook 2007 and mousing over them revealed the true URLs. As I never see these while browsing, the ones I do encounter (thru the email) don’t bother me.

While going to your website I did see you had a tiny url at the top on the right side. Since I am in firefox I right-clicked on it and scrolled down to the NoScript tab which opened another drop down showing the real URL and any others attached to the link.
