“If you see a port labeled “open,” let me know about it by using the WS Lounge link below.”
HTTPS port 443 is open on my desktop. Not sure why, though I have some guesses. However, disabling the two inbound rules (SSTP-In and NVIDIA Network Service) and the one outbound rule (BranchCache) which specify that port in my firewall did not affect the ShieldsUP test.

Thank you. So in Windows 8.x, where syncing to SkyDrive is built-in, does that make BoxCryptor redundant? Or if I encrypt documents using EFS in my local SkyDrive folder, and those docs are available offline, am I only encrypting locally and losing that encryption when they get sent to the cloud?

There must obviously be a simple answer, but since I do not know: Since EFS is native, why not just use that instead of BoxCryptor?

    • Thank you! That was exactly what I needed. 🙂

    • in reply to: Office 365: Office in the Cloud still promising? #1323070

Nice article. My business partners and I appreciate the ability to collaborate in native formats. We formerly used Google Docs and found it a bit frustrating in that regard, as well as in performance.

Now how about some useful tips on using Office 365? Like how to temporarily share a particular document folder with someone other than your Office 365 users. Or advantages and disadvantages of moving your small business web site to Office 365. Or pros and cons of Lync – is it worth diving into? Since Microsoft support is so lacking, maybe this would be a great place to offer some guidance for those of us finding this service to be a good fit, and knowing that we are not getting as much out of it as we could. Or if nothing else, at least some info on the best places to find this kind of information. That would be great.

Well, I tried this with Acronis and am even more frustrated now. I purchased the Acronis Plus Pack for the Universal Restore feature, which is advertised as being capable of doing a real to virtual migration (as well as restoring to dissimilar hardware). When I could not figure out how to select a virtual hard drive as the destination, I contacted Acronis tech support, who informed me that feature only works when imaging Windows 7. So I am back to square one – now with the impression that it is not possible to create a virtual machine from an image of an existing computer running XP. Has anyone out there ever done this?

    • in reply to: Disk2VHD image will not open #1215583

Thanks, Byron. I have Acronis and will try that route.

I had installed VirtualBox not long ago to check it out, but did not see any advantages, so I removed it. If the native MS VM cannot open the Acronis image as a VM, then I am willing to reinstall VirtualBox, per your success, to try that. I can also try VMPlayer, which I have also already tried with the Disk2VHD image.

The partition is only 30 GB total, so that is not the issue.

Will post again once I have had time to try an Acronis image, in case anyone else is finding this thread useful.

      Byron,

Yes. I created a new VM and then pointed to the file created by Disk2VHD as the hard drive for that VM. The file size is about 22 GB. Only the c: drive was imaged.

I appreciate the suggestions, but I am still looking for an answer.

OK. Well, that was a hassle, but it worked.
      Thank you.

No multiple data files; just my outlook.pst and my archive.pst.

Thanks, Hans, but when I right-click the extra personal folders and select Close, I get a message that says, “The operation failed. An object could not be found.”
