Doc, after some experimentation I got it: Only if you actually mark in OE to automatically Log In at the Win Messenger when opening OE, you will see all your online contacts! But this goes at the expense of the somewhat more sophisticated MSN Messenger – it’s either one: the system does not allow you to have them both running simultaneously. Thus, in end, I will inactivate the Windows Mess and live without seeing contacts online in OE.

      Thanks thankyou

Doc, thanks a lot! It helped, and it did NOT? I am just more confused. I reactivated/reinstalled WINDOWS Messenger (along MSN Messenger) and, as you see in the attachment, I could open a list. But still it did not help in so far that I still do NOT see who actually is online( by changing colors as I could before in the older Win 98 SE Setting), though at that moment I HAD people online according to the status at MSN Messenger!

Moreover, contrary to what it says in one of the articles you included, you do NOT need to activate WINDOWS Messenger in order to let MSN Messenger function properly. Before the activation/reinstallation it worked as good, except that tat that time I could not open that Contact panel in OE. But what does it help me, if it still doesn’t show the actual online status?

And finally, why do we need 2 very similar if not identical programs: MSN Messenger AND Windows Messenger (if MSN CAN function independently? If it would be that Windows messenger is the old precursor to MSN, why was it still updated in XP SP2? I think the two messengers are very confusing – a real mess! Please comment.

Beryl, as I indeed forgot to reply to Doc, I have MSN Messenger enabled (I actually use it frequently to chat). You do NOT mix up with Windows messenger, or Windows’ “Messenger Service, both of which I have disabled?

    • in reply to: auto clipart (2000 SP-3) #928902

Apparently there is (was) an Auto Clipart function in the 97 version, that comes forward with suggestions for clipart according to the text. content In 2000 there should be something like “Presentation Assistant” that, among others, proposes Auto Clipart. Couldn’t find anything.

      Doc,

      (1) the “here” link does not work
(2)clicking on the contact button does not allow anything else than “New Contact”; no sorting, no nothing. Something seems to be missing in this setup.

See attached Zip file of the screen image

No, this is not correct! I am talking about the list of contacts in Outlook Express that is present down to the left if you mark this under Wiew/Layout/Basic. In my previous setup on the old PC under Win 98 SE I could indicate how to sort the contacts there, and would automatically see those who were online. Nothing of this in my current Setup.

Instead of the windows image I have copied the relevant tex from the OE Helpfile:

To view contacts who are online

In Outlook Express, on the Contacts menu, click Sort by Status.
Online contacts (green icons) move to the top of the Contacts list, followed by those who are offline (red icons), and finally by regular Address Book contacts (yellow icons).

      Note

Sorting by status in Outlook Express separates your active online contacts from those whose status is not online (such as Away or Busy).

I am unable to attach the 109 kb file of the screenshot!

    • Please note that I emphasized that I am quite familiar with the approaches you suggest, but that I want to download the updates FOLLOWING SCANNING. This, for instance, reduces the SP3 update from the default size of over 13 Mb to about 8.7 Mb adapted to the setup of my PC. I want to download only that 8.7 Mb specific file and thereafter separately install it. What about that?

      Thanks, James

It worked! Great , thanks, James

      Thanks,

This is the reversed but more smart version of the simple idea I actually carried out: adding “Continued” in a text box on top of each repeated heading. The problem is that those text boxes may shift. In the proposed example, you need only check the first one which is positioned to hide the text “continued ” in the first real heading. Good idea. Thanks, James

Postscriptum: I tried it but it did not work in m italic y document:
      1. When I attempted to insert a text box or rectangle they just inserted between the tex instead of on top.!
      2. When I just copied the rectangle/text box from the attachment, it did cover the word ‘continued’ in the (first) header, but continued to do so also in the header on the next page ! (in contrast to what occurred in the attached table from wopr!)

Anyone has an idea what happened in each case?

    • in reply to: word freezes (Word/Office 2000 SR-1) #617420

Thanks again. Meanwhile, I have succeeded in opening the file on a different computer (at work; similar setup – Win 98 and Office 2000 -as at home, but HP 890C instead of HP 920C printer) and than saved it as an RTF file. However this file again froze my home PC!

I have not tried the WordPad approach you suggested as this would anyway destroy the WordArt format and the file is not very important. What, however, is more important, is how I could avoid this problem in the future. For your info: my PC has 160 RAM memo, and a 5 GB partitioned harddisk with about 550 MG free on C: and 1 GB free on D:. I clean (including sometimes DLL’s and registry), scan and defragment regularly.

      Regards, James

Again thanks for extremely fast response!

The problem emerged when printing; thereafter each time I try to open the file (without even getting to printing) the whole computer freezes (even ctrl+alt+del does not help; only shut down by pressing power!).

Therefore, can’t Save as RTF from within Word as it fails to completely open (=catch 22; or: ‘there is a hole in my bucket!’).

Since I correspond here from work from a different computer, and the problem is on my home PC, I couldn’t yet try your solution re: changing the printer driver.

      Thanks, regards, James

    • in reply to: word freezes (Word/Office 2000 SR-1) #615436

Thanks; however, even trying to open it immediately freezes the doc at the stage where the Wordart text starts to develop! So, other than after changing to rtf in Explorer (which did not help) I can’t do anything, including copying.

This scenario has happened before with another Wordart containing document and the same printer (HP 920c).

      Another suggestion?

      Thanks, James Loewenstein
