One other thing, when you are confronted with the “not compatible” dialog box, you should have an option to continue anyway. Are you doing that? If not, do so (ignoring the warning).

If you’re nervous about eBay, Office Max has an ad today for 128mb ram for $19 after rebate ($39 to start). Why I like eBay is there’s lots of people (like you and me) who upgrade their ram, and what to do with the perfectly good old ram? EBay of course! Now Crucial is the best you can get, but do you really need it for that system? If it was me, I’d slap some cheap ram in there and enjoy it. One other thing, max ram is controlled not only by the processor, but by the motherboard’s BIOS. It may be possible to use more than 2 x 128, but it will probably require a BIOS upgrade, if one is available.

So are you unplugging the 98 hard drive and plugging in the new (XP) one? Should be set up like this:

IDE 0 (“primary hard drive connection”) Plug the new hard drive into the end plug on the 80 wire cable. Make sure that the hd jumper on the back of the drive is set to Master (or cable select – which will set the end plug as master)

IDE 1 (“secondary hard drive connection”) CD – set with jumpers to Master, plugged into the end plug of a second 80wire cable.

Is this the way you are set up?

Definitely not. Your machine uses 168 pin SDRAM, while what you are looking to buy is 184 pin DDR RAM. Not only won’t it work, it won’t fit. Since you have two sticks of ram, I’m making an educated guess that your system is only capable of using 128mb sticks (2 x 128 = 256 max). However, the good news is that you should be able to pick up a 128mb sdram stick for far less than $24.99, if you look around. Pick up one on eBay for $10 or less.

      Hey Bob,
That’s him! Josh in the flesh…err umm I mean fur…..!!! What a beautiful guy. I loved the way he barked and barked when he won. I have a friend from Wash DC who was at Westminster. Afraid I wouldn’t be too impressed by all those “just like dogs only smaller”, but now there’s a champion I can root for!

Here’s how I do it, there are other methods. I use TweakUI. If you don’t have it you can download the latest version From Microsoft Here. Once you save the file to your computer and run the .exe, TweakUI will be in Control Panel. Open it up and click on the “My Computer” tab. In the lower portion of the dialog box is a section called “Special Folders” Open the drop down list, choose My Documents, and then browse to the folder you want. You’ll get a warning message, but ok through it and you’re all set.

    • The “Out of Range” message does involve your video card. It means that the resolution settings are set too high for the monitor to display. You could fix this by booting into safe mode and changing the display settings to a resolution that is within range. While you’re there check the screen refresh setting to make sure it’s within range, too. This is a simple fix, although it is unfortunate that you have to deal with it.

While I was not aware that nVidia 52.16 was a critical update, there are other software makers that have security holes in their software. It has been interesting to follow in some of the MS blogs the stories they tell of 3rd party apps cutting corners in their software development, which causes Windows to crash, which is blamed on MS. Perhaps earlier nVidia drivers don’t play nice with the latest MS patches, and so MS wants you to update your driver. Don’t see anything wrong with that. Just curious what driver are you using now?
